Hello soon-to-be GRE test takers,This 5 lb GRE book was the only non-ETS material I used to study for the GRE. However, I've glossed through other Kaplan/Princeton/Etc GRE books and have to say that this book is one of the best study materials you can get. The book is big, and I did not finish all the questions, partly because the questions seem to all look the same after awhile (this is a good thing!) and partly because I was lazy (this is a less good thing). I scored a 325, and the questions I mostly got wrong were in the vocabulary section and because of timing, because I didn't feel like studying vocab, and because I only timed myself on a practice test once.In my opinion, the questions in this book are generally tougher than what I had on the actual GRE (aside from vocab, as vocab is basically just vocab either way). So here is what I would do:1. I would go through at least 1 of each section in this book - READ THROUGH THE EXPLANATIONS OF WHAT YOU GOT WRONG.2. Then take the first ETS free practice test (download PowerPrep II onto your computer if you have one, otherwise I believe they have a paper version as well)3. Then look over your score (ETS doesn't give you explanations, so you'll have to go by your score and intuition to see what you didn't understand)4. Do the rest/as much as possible left of the sections in this book. If you can't finish all of them, at least do the sections that you struggled most on.5. Then take the second ETS free practice test.6. Then do vocabulary. This book is similar to all other GRE books in the way they attack vocab (basically try to get you to memorize as many words as possible). This works for some people, but it takes a long time, and quite often seems counterproductive if you won't remember the words after the test anyway. If you have the time and means, what I suggest to do is to read news editorials and opinionated articles and look up the words you don't know. This way, you really get the context of the word not only in the sentence, but also from the article and content itself. It is surprising how many words you've read and glossed over, thinking you knew what it meant, only to realize that you were completely wrong.I hope this review is helpful to you stressed-out students and/or nontraditional GRE takers! I've taken the GRE twice, two years apart.First time around - studied from ETS, Princeton Review and Kaplan. I did alright. The practice material from PR and Kaplan isn't the same level of rigor as the ETS exam, and ETS's book has a limited number of practice problems. So I did a lot of practice, but it didn't prepare me for the more difficult math and reading sections later in the test. My 2nd sections increased in difficulty and I was overwhelmed.Second time, two years later - Started with Kaplan and Princeton Review, but again was feeling underprepared. A friend recommended the 5lb Manhattan Prep book to me. GAME. CHANGER. I wish I had known about this book with more time before taking the GRE again, I probably would have also invested in some of Manhattan Prep's other study material for the quantitative section. A large part of taking standardized tests is getting a feel for the test, which only comes from lots of practice. This book gives you:-- a ton of practice, at the right level of difficulty. 500+ pages of just math practice and explanations (nevermind all of the reading and essay practice in this beast of a book)-- 30-50 practice questions for EACH topic. I found this really helpful because it allowed me to see the nuances between different kinds of probability or triangle questions, etc. At the end there are mixed sections to tie it all together, plus a section of advanced quantitative questions if you've mastered everything else.--AWESOME answer explanations. They're thorough, often detailing alternate approaches - different perspectives are really useful if you don't understand something the first time around.I'm so happy with how this book prepared me, and much happier with my score the second time around. I agree with other reviewers that ETS is still the best practice material, but this is definitely the second best book you can buy to prepare yourself. I've never felt compelled to write a review for anything until now. Buy this book buy this book, even if you only have a few weeks of studying left, it's worth it.(Side note - nothing to do with the book, but I used Magoosh's vocab app, that was also useful)

Excellent book. I took the GRE last week and scored 327. Much of the credit for that score will go to this book and the 6 Manhattan tests (more difficult than the real GRE!) that I took.The book has sections for each concept tested in the GRE and enough practice problems in each section that you can master both the concept as well as the question types on that concept that might appear in the GRE.For the concepts that I needed to learn from scratch, such as probability and combinatorics, the Khan academy lectures were perfect.Overall, this book helped me build speed, accuracy and confidence for the quant as well as verbal section.I recommend buying one of the strategy guides so that you can access the 6 online, full length practice tests. Buying them for Manhattan prep on their own costs $30 but each strategy guide costs only about $14 on Amazon.

This is the best overall of three books on blackjack I've read so far. You get the feeling this man has a very well-organized mind. He's the first author I've read who adequately explains deviations from basic strategy and the matix tables. He nicely discusses the issue of whether to go with a simpler or more complex counting system. Ironically, he is weakest where other writers are stronger: on betting strategy. Here I think he gets a bit too mathematically precise in his betting tables. Would someone with a $20,000 bankroll really bet in amounts of 83, 133, 182, 267, 338...? (p. 122). Of course not. But I completely agree with Bukovsky when he says, "Don't just read this book. Read everything you can get your hands on....Read and reread..." (219). Sound advice, in my view.

This is by far the best blackjack book I've read. This book breaks EVERYTHING down to the point its no way you cant understand the game and perks as well. Learning to count cards from a level one point to a level three point count. At first i was kind of undecisive on what book to buy but after reading this book and applying it to my game i have no regrets.From this point I can only get better.

I'm just a beginner and this book lays everything out simply while still remaining engaging. This is great resource for the beginner and I'm certain I'll refer back to it as I improve my play.

This gives the reader the chance to combine their impression not just of the bar/restaurant/secret spot being recommended, but also of who personally is making the recommendation. A novel approach to a guide to Roma that I found to give a nice special touch.

This is a fun book, and good to read while I am planning my trip to Rome. However, each of the 100 Romans gives a restaurant recommendation which is excellent, however half of these restaurant recommendations are illustrated with the same photo of tiramisu! Each of the 100 Romans tells their "secret spot" in the city, and all of them are good, but many are hardly "secret": campo de fiori, piazza navona, the Roman Forum. the paper and quality of the print is cheap, similar to bad xerox quality, and not worthy of the hardcover binding. Still, as I said I am getting excited for my trip so it is still fun to read. Better bought on the bargain table for $5 (certainly not $29)Note: as I have been writing this review I have discovered that there is no author indicated on the cover or title page. This is really a sub-standard publication.

He assures me that this cookbook in its classics section reflects true Island flavors and that the remainder of the book reflects Island sensibilities. The traditional raw, seared or cooked fish pokes recipes are fundamental to understanding the remainder of the cookbook. The author suggests alternative fish and at times, alternative ingredients if you cannot obtain the required ingredients. The result is that you can quickly become an "extemporaneous" poke cook using what is available in the current season in your locale. This freedom in recipes is enhanced by the inclusion of the South Asian "Bhelpuri Shrimp", the "Moroccan Blackened 'Ahi", the Peruvian "Mahimahi Ceviche with Mango and Liliko'i"More surprising is the Vegetable Poke section where vegetables, generally cooked, are presented in poke style. Several recipes here are excellent outside this context e.g. "Sweet Potato and Cilantro", "Beet and Macadamia", "Carrot Ginger". These recipes are good but not particularly innovative. The book closes with bases for Poke Bowls giving a complete meal - here contemporary food trend show as in the cauliflower rice "Kimchi-Cauli Rice", "Poke 'Nachos'" ... and a few drinks, snacks, etc. to create a complete meal.

I bought this to broaden my repertoire of recipes to cater in a salad bar buffet. I was trying out many recipes with international flavors by testing, developing recipes. I have created quite a lot and many are keepers and can be rotated throughout the season of ingredients like fruits, vegetables, and some protein. So going back to this book - the recipes are easy-to-follow and this is a great introduction to what are the possibilities of making poke at home. I am glad that there are classic recipes, and then she gives more inspiration on flavor affinities that go well to suit a food lifestyle choice like going vegan or being more creative on mixing other vegetables and protein. Then the sauces are great too.I had tried several classic and modern recipes - they are really good!Then she also gives recipes for other Hawaiian treats especially the Furikaki popcorn which I appreciate once in a while. Huapia is more of an acquired taste and liking - I know think this is comfort food. I am discovering more Hawaiian snacks when reading the last chapter.I would say this book opened my culinary mind and knowledge base to the next level making poke, and other complementary dishes that goes well with it. The last chapter gives us what Hawaiian snacks to eat with a melting pot of food influences that goes well with every dish. This is a well-written cookbook that feature poke bowls, Hawaiian comfort foods and snacks for every food lifestyle choice it caters. An excellent cookbook to have in your kitchen library.

We bought this for my husband for Father's Day; he wants to make & eat every recipe. I can't wait to make the haupia dessert recipe as well. This author has done an outstanding job; mahalos to Martha Cheng!

Excellent review of Ugandan history from precolonial times through today. Having studied abroad in Uganda and read several books on modern Uganda, I was already familiar with Uganda's postcolonial history. I was less familiar with Uganda's precolonial and colonial history, however, so this book filled a lot of gaps for me.Reid's book is not strictly chronological, as it starts out by reviewing Uganda's postcolonial history and then starts over again from precolonial times, with additional chapters on economic history and traditional institutions. He covers the history of interactions between the Buganda and Bunyoro kingdoms in particular, as well as that of other ethnic groups in what today constitutes Uganda and neighboring peoples. In the process, he makes a strong case that a national history of Uganda should cover precolonial roots as well as colonial and postcolonial history. Contrary to the tendency of many historians to treat colonial/postcolonial Africa as somewhat disconnected from precolonial history, modern Uganda cannot be fully understood unless this longer history is taken into account. Rather than viewing the nation of Uganda as a product of British colonialism and postcolonial developments alone, modern Uganda should be viewed as the culmination of several historical processes, many of which were well underway prior to the arrival of the British.Well written and an enjoyable read, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in delving into Ugandan history. Explains in great detail why Darwin's evolutionary theory is completely false.

Very intriguing book that makes you ask questions.

The author presents an excellent argument which should result in a thoughtful reanalysis of the theory. That will never happen since the pro-Darwin camp will never acknowledge the possibility of a creator; however, this book is valuable reading for anyone open to a very serious critique of many aspects of the theory.

This book is a collection of essays compiled and commentated on by Dr. James P Gills and Dr. Thomas Woodward, designed to refute modern science's pervasive allegiance to macro evolution. Each essay is very thorough and most are quite technical. A scientific background is helpful with some of the chapters, especially the Complexity of the Cell and the Design of the Vertebrate Retina (although both establish the entire point of the authors without any other argument necessary.)Chapter 5 offers an excellent synopsis of the most relevant evaluations in this ongoing debate. It provides all the major points of the empirical and philosophical critiques of Darwinism in seed form. If you're looking for just the broad overview, this is your chapter!Chapters 6 and 7 proved to be my personal favorites. Chapter six details the Cambrian Explosion and the Rediscovery of the Burgess Shale both as significant obstacles to current macro evolutionary theory.In Chapter seven, Thomas Woodward puts Dr. Michael Behe's book, Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution, up against Darwin's own words in The Origin of Species. Darwin said,"If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down." The discovery of molecular biology brought the concept of irreducible complexity to the forefront of the evolutionary debate. Woodward summarizes Behe's position as, "modern evolutionary theory, applying Darwin's own test, flunks spectacularly at the molecular level."The book's conclusion brings all of the essays and all of the technical scientific data to one spectacular point: "Science in its search for truth has sought independence from dogma, ostensibly religious doctrine, and yet scientists have clung pertinaciously to another doctrine that is so silken and seductive, so integral and unquestioned as to be as much the organizing principle of an entire discipline as an explanatory device of individual instances." The author's point? Evolutionary science has become it's own religion and it's like the Emperor's New Clothes. Can the immovable position of today's scientific community "be interpreted as anything but hesitance to open the eyes and face the deeper truth that obviously shines through the breaks and faults of a thin and fractured surface?"But all is not lost. "As the masses tremble before their god of science and its liturgies of statistics [and] society slumps into alienation," James Gills reminds us of the Truth and opens the door for grace; the intelligence we were gifted with to behold the beauty of the Designer's plan. "If we deign to look, we will see God's eye in the sun, His gesture in the bee's waggle dance, and His arms in the ocean's fragrant embrace."

I like this book a lot. It provides an excellent argument integrating the world view of Faith in God with Science. It is a collection of essays by Intelligent Design proponents including some you may have heard of (Dembski, Johnson, Behe, and Thaxton) along with some that I had not personally heard of (Gills, Woodward, Hartwig, and Ayoub). In some cases, the articles were written for other publications and are either reprinted or revised for this book. It is unapologetically Christian referring to Biblical teaching while integrating that with a wealth of evidence. The underlying theme, which is articulated most clearly by Philip Johnson and addressed from various angles by other contributors is that the debate is NOT between Creationism and Evolution but between World Views - Christian faith and Naturalism/Scientific Materialism. They also point out how the Materialist imports his metaphysic into the debate and unjustly skews the debate by unilaterally determining what is allowed, etc.There is not a whole lot of new stuff in the book. Some of the examples are repeated over and over (irreducible complexity, for one). However, it is very accessible to the reader and even though the discussion gets very detailed in spots, just about any reader can follow it.One of the real highlights of this book was the chapter by Michael Behe. His first part isn't new, just his concept of irreducibility and the example of the flagellum. However, in the second section, he takes on two people, Kenneth Miller and Russell Doolittle, who have boasted to destroying his irreducible complexity. I had read of this in other reviews and was very happy to find the rebuttals here. In both cases, the people in question overlooked some very important details in Halls research experiment (Miller) and T.H. Bugge, et al's work on blood clotting. It turns out that Miller and Doolittle have been careless in their handling of the facts and when the whole report is read, both experiments provide strong evidence for irreducible complexity. In fact in Hall's experiment, he had to intervene with an artificial inducer, IPTG, to move the experiment along. Behe points out that this is investigator interference adding information (design?) to the experiment. It shows that scientists who are highly motivated to bash ID can and do make mistakes and cook the results. They and their findings may not be reliable at face value. The third section of Behe's article deals with the evolutionary myth that ID is not falsifiable. Both Miller and Doolittle attempted to falsify ID by using lab experiments, although they were unsuccessful because of carelessness and lack of supporting data. However, this failed attempt shows that ID IS falsifiable and that complaint from evolutionists is bogus. Further, he makes an interesting point that evolution is NOT falsifiable because of the way Darwin stated it in his book. So, the pot has been calling the kettle black for all of these years!!!Thaxton makes an interesting point that if Origins is best explained by intelligent design, then the whole paradigm changes and mechanistic proposals may be found lacking. This is already a huge problem with the discovery of information (DNA) in the cell.Ayoub's discussion of the design of the Vertebrate Retina is very interesting. I had read summaries of it elsewhere, but it was very nice to read the whole article.Evolutionists will not like the book and will pan it. However, it does an excellent job of defining the relationship between Christian belief and real science. It takes both very seriously and dispels the artificial constraints that Materialism has placed on the debate. It also points out how evolutionists may be more faith-based than they admit to being.As I said, I really liked this book!!

This is a nice large format book with an more of an original story than the usual rehash of Arthurian tales. The illustrations are very nice.I wish the book was a little bigger, a little longer, but perhaps this is just the right length for a short read and the feeling of accomplishment that comes from reading a book to the end.Dragons and Merlin. What's not to like?

The King Arthur legend is a treasure trove of children's stories. The worst way to approach the legend is to try to tell the whole story in one book. The legend is just too rich with detail for this approach to work. It is better to select individual stories and rework them for children.This is the approach Jane Yolen uses in "Merlin and the Dragon". The story takes place soon after Arthur has pulled the sword out of the stone and centers on how Merlin revealed to Arthur that he is the son of Uther Pendragon. The book is well written and beautifully illustrated and is a pleasure for both adults and children. Highly recommended.

this is a great story with details, twists etc...if your child enjoys story telling, this is a good book for the 5 yo 7 year old. it has enough text and details to keep a child who likes stories interested for the 20/30 minutes or so that it takes to read this (parent reading to the child).the only warning is that if your child is bothered by talking about death or blood (in a fictional way), then this might not be the book for you. it does not focus on those topics but it does talk about a cruel king enslaving people and wanting a sacrifice.

This was read to me as a child in elementary school, and I loved it. I bought it for my son when he was 4 and it was as engaging and striking as I remember. The illustrations alone are beautiful, and the story is a great retelling of one of the most famous young Merlin myths.

Son loves it. Exciting. Great story for bedtime.

I bought this for a 4 year old girl who is a big fan of the "How to Train Your Dragon" movies and TV show. She loves this book. And if a preschooler learns and loves a story from classic literature, that's a bonus!

I bought this book for my six, now severn year old. He and his four year old brother both love it, and it is one of my favorites to read both for the story and the illustrations. It has a few mildly graphic phrases I tone down when reading "you had better be right or I will shed your blood" but is really fine, in my opinion, for age 6+ and younger with minor editing by the reader. I am assuming you read it out loud, as I do ...

Beautifully illustrated but maybe a tad adult in its style - not "adult", but grown-up, a little dry for children.
