My son was given this through his school to do over summer break (going from k in to 1st) its a pretty good work book though I have noticed some errors at least within the copy we have. One it is missing a page to review the letter E (how to write it, what words start with E) the book seems to cover all the letter in the alphabet expect E which i'm guessing is a printing or design error on the publishers end. Two unless your kid is really good at reading there will be sections you'll have to either read to them or word it in a way they understand since the way some of it is worded it seems to be written for those older then 1st grade. It is a workbook that needs a parent/adults/older siblings supervision for a child to work, at least on the areas they get stuck in because they don't understand the questions etc...
I bought K to 1, 1st to 2nd, and 3rd to 4th. These are definitely better than the First Grade Bound (etc) that I bought last year (those ones had no order, no plan, and didn't match grade levels well). I really liked the daily break down of the Summer Bridge books. It was a clear and easy to follow - so easy the kids didn't need me to tell them what to do each day. They matched grade level fairly well. But holy cow these books are BORING! It's just work. Blah. There is no attempt to actually engage the children, just busy work. My husband and I are college graduates and are education-minded. We push our kids to learn for learning's sake, but these books make education as boring as it can get. If you want bland just-do-this-and-get-it-over-with work to keep the brain going, these are more than adequate. I'm looking forward to trying out the Brain Quest Summer books which seem to make it more of a game and the activities are not just long lists of boring-ness.My other complaint is the inconsistency in the grade levels. The 1st to 2nd grade was the best one - well balanced and challenging enough to keep the brain going, but easy enough for light summer work. It had a particularly good ratio of math, language, reading, writing, and social studies and pretty much all of the activities were manageable with the right amount of challenge. The K to 1 book was mostly ok. The first of the three sections was so ridiculously easy that my daughter did it all on her own before school was even over (she wanted to!). It was activities like circling the right number of apples or just writing a single letter a bunch of times. She finished what was supposed to be a month's worth of work in about a week in her spare time. Fortunately we didn't need all three sections since their summer is only 9 weeks, so the other two sections got us through the rest of the summer doing a two-sided page "day" 5 days a week. The 3rd to 4th grade book had the opposite problem. It started off great, but halfway through the second section much of the math was getting overly busy and sometimes too complex. There were many division problems that are beyond what he had learned in 3rd grade, and he's in G.A.T.E. In class they only covered multiplication and division 0-12. Example: 496 / 4 = ___. Example: A word problem where he has to work out either 162 / 18 or 18 x __ = 162. He got the concepts as I taught them, but it was frustrating. Some activities were just too lengthy for a quick summer book, such as a set of 10 addition problems like this: 8214 + 7716 + 6389 = ____. It's not that it was hard, but does he really need to do 10 of those, on top of three other activities? One of which is MORE math? There were many times his brother and sister would be done with their books plus 20 minutes of reading and in the pool while he was still working. Granted he likes to stall, so I always had him finish it to avoid rewarding his stalling, but I have to admit that I thought it was too much busy work. That and I found myself teaching him stuff he'd never seen before.Bottom line is that these books were inconsistent and tedious and I will try others before I buy them again.
I was on the fence after reading some of the non-favorable reviews but I think this book will be good for the summer. It does start off easy (writing numbers 1-10, counting) but after flipping through, I see it ends with telling time, money and more complex skills that my child will learn in first grade. Maybe it depends on your school district and what their curriculum is, but this book will work for us. There are also stickers for each page that your child completes, which may provide motivation.
The first part of the workbook may be a little too easy for your rising 1st grader. However that helped us out by giving my son some confidence which helped him as we got further into the workbook and the more difficult work. I really liked how they had the book separated out by days made it easy for my son to know he only had a little to do each day.
We have utilized these books for years! My oldest is 13, youngest is 5. My kids enjoy completing one worksheet each day and often ask to do more than one. The difficulty of the worksheets increases over time which is perfect for building new skills while maintaining old ones. The star stickers at the back are a nice reward to add to each worksheet once completed. My children have never been interested in completing the "goals" in the beginning of the book. I like that in addition to brain exercises there are physical exercises as well! These workbooks have been great for my family and helped immensely to prevent the "summer slide". We even bring them along on vacation, the kids have worked in them at restaurants waiting for food, in the car on road trips and in the evening in hotels!! Great buy!
These are amazing! As a Mom who wasn't sure how to help my kids over the summer this is the answer! They are right on track with their grade level academics. Takes about 15 min a day and sometimes my kids want to do two! Some pages they can do on their own and some they need light assistance. I feel like these books will keep them thinking and learning over the summer. I will buy these for years to come! Don't let a summer go by without these!
I got this for my soon to be 1st grader right before her kindergarten graduation so we could be absolutely ready for summer. We do a page everyday, sometimes two because she really enjoys it!I love that the beginning was more or a review and it helped give her the confidence to keep going. The end of each “day†had a fun thing to do which we both got a kick out of.I can honestly say with the book I have seen tremendous growth in her over the summer! As a teacher in 1st-3rd grade, I know she is completely ready!
We ordered this workbook as well as the summer brain quest for this age group, and we definitely prefer this one. It suits our goals for a summer workbook and also meets the needs and skills of our child. I felt like it did a pretty good job reinforcing the things learned in K5. I'm hoping to see positive results when school begins.
What to do if your kindergartner doesn't get homework but wants it? He's already starting on the K-1 summer bridge workbook. This is a great series (he did PreK-K over the summer.) He can do much of it self-directed and he loves the accomplishment of applying the stickers when he's done with a set of pages.
