"Themes of friendship and problem-solving are slipped effortlessly into the funny and fresh plot, and authentic off-the-grid details bring the story to life . . . A tale of loyalty and friendship—with a strong dose of validation for readers who learn from doing rather than books—that hits all the right notes." —Kirkus "From contending with school bullies to increasingly learning to valuehis family and their off-the-grid lifestyle, Matt’s experiences are supportively portrayed in accessibly written, straightforward prose. Johnson incorporates both lively and reflective moments, abundant dogsledding details, and basic accounting concepts and examples." —Booklist

This story is about an 11-year old named Matt who isn’t that great at school, but who is really good at dog sledding and how he uses that strength to overcome obstacles with his school work, his home life and friends. I loved everything about this book and, as a dog sport competitor, how the author perfectly captured the special relationship between a handler and a working dog. What made it endearing are the little nuggets of wisdom tucked in between all the action with the dog sledding lessons. I especially liked the way his mom reacted to his final math grade at the end. I don’t want to give a spoiler, so I’ll just say it wasn’t a typical reaction, which I appreciated. My little girl is too young to read this on her own, but she is obsessed with any story with dogs in it, so this will get added to the list for when she’s old enough to read on her own.
You should always treat people the way you want to be treated. Always believe in yourself!!! Don't be afraid to ask for help that is how you learn!
very good book. read it in one day. Very good book for children. would recommend it to anyone
Kids love it and it’s a Maine Student Book
Matt Misco, 11 and his sister Lily, 6 have a very different lifestyle than most of their peers. Matt's family believe in letting him roam in a "Free Range" style. The Miscos live off the land and use a wood burning stove for cooking and for heating their home. Because Matt has not had as much exposure to peers and has a whole different frame of references, his peers make him the target of taunting. School is especially challenging for the boy.Matt is not big on books and unfortunately had a dearth of literary learning. He is a visual learner, a hands-on learner who works best by actually doing a task. Luckily he has a really good teacher who thinks of ways to meet each student's needs equitably. One such example of this is when Matt's teacher assigns him to starting a business and keeping records of profit and loss. A satisfactory assignment will mean an extra math credit for gun-shy math Matt.Luckily for Matt, he comes from a family of sled dog racers. Using this experience, he decides he will teach his classmates the fine art of mushing huskies and malamutes. One especially kind boy called Tubbs who joins up with Matt is practically his polar opposite. Even so, they learn the importance of teamwork; of working with huskies and malamutes; of figuring out solutions to problems and how their efforts apply in mathematics.I absolutely loved the characters. I loved the Miscos, Matt's teacher and Tubbs as well as their curly tailed huskies. This is such a wonderful book that at the risk of sounding corny, I am really going to miss these characters, human and husky. This is a book I would recommend for classrooms and school discussion groups and projects. Another excellent feature included in this book was the glossary of mushing terms and the illustration of a musher with a husky sled team.Whodini's 1984 hit "Friends" and McFadden & Whitehead's 1979 classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" could well underscore this book.
Matt and his family live off the grid with few modern day conveniences. His parents believe in Free Range kids. Matt gets a lot of taunting in school and has even been called Smoky because of his aroma of the family’s wood burning stove. Matt tends to learn by doing rather than book learning so math class is getting difficult for him. His teacher gives the class a chance to earn some extra math credit by starting a business and reporting the profit/loss to the class.Matt’s family raises sled dogs to he decides to start a school to teach Mushing. He ends up having two students. Tubbs is a bit clunky but loveable. He takes immediately to Matt’s family lifestyle but not so much to the physical effort of dog sledding. Alex is an overachiever who seems to know everything and takes immediately to the challenge of running the dogs. The theme of friendship and problem solving are at the root of this fun book but on the surface it’s just a fun story of kids and dogs.
Set in Copper Creek, Michigan that I couldn't find on a map (though I found many retailers and other entities with Copper Creek in their name), Sled Dog School engages anyone who loves animals, kids, adventure, and a touch of how will this resolve (or will it?) in a story that includes Matt, his younger sister Lily, a math class assignment, and a heartening outcome. At least in the past, Michigan was major Copper Country, and it feels as if Copper Creek may be in the northern part of the state, possibly in the Upper Peninsula. We get sled dogs teams in a rural residential area, parents raising free range kids, a family living off the grid. An outhouse, no electric, no central heating, and enough snow for dog teams? Yes!Basics are about Matt's school assignment to start and keep books for his own business that per the book title, is a Sled Dog School. You'll need to read for yourself how Matt and his parents, Matt and his classmates, Matt and his teachers make their ways through the narrative, but I can assure you the plot fascinated me and Terry Lynn Johnson brought everything to life as a reader would expect from an experienced author.I chose Sled Dog School the book... because I've been loving middle school novels, and especially because Northern Dogs / Siberian Huskies / Sled Dogs intrigue me. My southern Arizona friend Carla introduced me to those fabulous dogs; she learned about and became smitten with then when she lived and worked in Alaska, later on owned several of her own northern dogs, and even later than that, ran a northern dog rescue and adoption agency. Tamara, a Facebook friend I first met on Best Friends Animal Society's now defunct forums, lives in Yukon Territory and until recently had teams of huskies; I could not get enough of the frequent photographs and occasional videos of her teams in harness running across the snow!
