This is one of those classic reports that everyone references but very few people have actually read. I read it in connection with a report that I was writing about commissions. It was written by Abraham Flexner (a sort of one-man commission funded by the Carnegie Foundation) at the turn of the twentieth century, and it single-handedly revolutionized American medical education--and, in the process, American medicine. I knew that when I bought it. What I didn't know was how wonderfully readable it is, with Flexner's lively prose and acerbic wit bringing to life the untamed, primitive world of American medical education as it existed before he sank his teeth into its neck and put it out of its misery. A fascinating example of how one man really did make a very big difference!

This was extremely helpful to me. Flexner was the right man at the right time.

First, be assured that this is a faithfully reproduced copy of the Flexner report, not an OCR mess. The text is definitely readable. Second, be prepared to marvel at how Flexner went about his assignment. He actually visited all of the 150 medical schools that existed in the US and Canada in 1910. Of these he found 120 not worth saving . He makes is clear that the remaining 30 would be able to meet the need for MDs, and these 30 medical schools could be molded into institutions that produced the kind of physician that patients deserved. HIs recommendations served as the template for medical education for the next 100 yeas. As a physician who experienced (1953-57) the kind of training that Flexner advocated, I was truly excited to read how that system of medical education evolved.

Mr. Roebuck tries to document what he experienced in Panama ... although he was there such a very short time. The book is a "book of complaints" ... hard to read if one is an optimist. His decision to not move there, in his case, is a good thing. I would caution anyone reading his book. Some people will complain in any circumstance and we all those know those types. I encourage anyone reading this book to find out directly about Panama for themselves. It's cheap to get there and fun to experience. My wife and I are world travelers and I work currently in Africa. Every place we have ever been offers something different and interesting. After spending time in Panama, we have decided that it remains number one on our retirement list due to it's pristine jungles, green mountains, world class coasts (on both sides), and wonderful people. And hey, taking time to live in new culture and learn a second,language keeps the brain young and happy.

This book is a refreshing counterbalance to all the rah rah boosterism about relocating to Panama. As a foreign resident of Panama for 20 years, I can attest that everything the author says is true. There is no perfect place on the planet to live and personal preferences and personal tolerance zones account for why one person is happy in one place and not in another. Panama is a real country that has real problems like all others. Roebuck for giving perspective immigrants a more realistic look at the country of Panama.

Roebuck is entitled to his opinion. But he's honest. There is no postal service or ambulance protocol, police response in the boonies might be spotty. Grills on windows of expensive houses in Boquete. Etc. HOWEVER, having said that, go to Boquete, stay at Valle Escondido, and try to keep from getting misty over the absolute beauty of the place..

An honest look at life in Panama as experienced by one expat couple. Even if a person is set on moving to Panama this short book gives some important insights to think about. Being prepared for some of the down sides could make a move there less stressful. I noticed with interest that the author had multiple experiences with locals charging far more than the going rate simply because the locals figure the foreigners are "rich" and can afford to be ripped off. I experienced that in the Philippines quite a few times. Although there can be great experiences there too, some will call you stingy (or worse) if you're willing to pay only twice the normal price for a product or service instead of 5 times. That can get tiring. There are plenty of books extolling the virtues of Panama and some websites call it one of the top 5 retirement destinations. It may be exactly that for some people. This book helped convince me to check out other places.

This short book describes general conditions that fail to meet the author’s standards such as electricity, internet, shopping, weather, infrastructure, etc. Unless you’ve never traveled or visited the country you’re thinking of retiring to, this book has little to offer. The complaints would be obvious to any seasoned traveler.

If you are thinking about maybe moving to Panama, this book is a MUST READ. In 72 short pages (several of which are completely blank), author Roebuck gets directly to the heart of each of the issues he discusses, without any extraneous fluff. In doing so he corroborates the suspicions one may have developed through reading other books or websites that hype Panama as the perfect place to retire--either because one is trying to read between the lines or because the issues are entirely undiscussed.For example: "Electricity is many times more expensive than in the USA . . . The cost of air-conditioning 24/7 would be prohibitive." "[S]tores . . . do not have a returns policy, even for faulty items. . . . Customer service still has to be introduced to Panama." "[H]ome burglaries are very common." "[M]ost Panamanians do not have any respect for their environment. It is perfectly normal for them to spend a day on a beautiful clean beach and then dump their bottles, litter, carrier bags, and dirty diapers on the paths leading down to the beach." A "country with high levels of corruption." Etc.To be fair, among the many issues he discusses, he does also mention a number of advantages one may find in moving to Panama. It's not all negative.In the end, one needs, for themselves, to answer the question, "Yes, it's true, I do want very much to get out of the United States, but, given reality, will I be truly happy living in Panama day after day after day after day . . . ? Or do I want to look elsewhere?" Reading this short book is very helpful in answering that question. Much easier than making a move and then figuring it all out.

As a traveler who have been all over the world for over 40 years I applaud this book. The considerations covered in this book also apply to many other countries and can be useful for anyone planning reallocating overseas.

I read Elizabeth's first book which was hard to read in some ways because it is hard to think about people so evil as to keep her captive for such horrible reasons. This book was entirely different and I enjoyed most of the chapters. I think it is a good book, but not the best I have ever read. It does give you insights into her world now and how she is doing and that was a great encouragement.

Started this out of curiosity. Just recently having been diagnosed with cancer, nice to hear so many affirmations of my own attitude of positively moving forward. Well written and engaging

This book is OK. I admire Elizabeth Smart a great deal. She shares other women’s stories, which I appreciate. For some reason, it wasn’t as strong and impactful as I had anticipated it to be. But it is a good book.

Elizabeth writes from her experiences and the growth she has made in an honest and hopeful way. It would be helpful to anyone, struggling (as we all are) with the challenges of life. Thanks, Elizabeth. So glad you survived and are making a positive difference in many lives.

This is my first Daniel Fast. It has been an amazing journey. Last year when my church did the Daniel Fast, I was about to go on vacation and there was much turmoil in my life. I didn't think I could do the fast successfully. But I went ahead and ordered THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO THE DANIEL FAST so I would be ready the next time the church was asked to do it. So in July when our pastor announced that the Daniel Fast would begin on August 1st, I got my book and began to read. I could see that preparation is needed to do this fast. I prepared for 2 weeks by reading, praying, and planning. I could not have done the Daniel Fast without Kristen's book. I carried it with me everywhere during the fast and have so many things flagged that it looks like a porcupine. Thank you, Kristen, for creating such a helpful tool. Rhonda

This an excellent book, filled with delicious recipes. I used the Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast to reboot my system; during the holidays I went off my normal diet. The UDF recipes are well balanced in its' seasonings; which satisfy your taste buds. These recipes are not just healthy for you they are very tasty too. The recipes were fun, simple and quick to make. From snacks to main dishes; they all were a huge hit for me; so much so that I have chosen to incorporated these recipes in my normal diet. With the recipes in this book you know exactly what's going into your body; no hidden ingredients. Chose this book over many others to guide me through the Daniel Fast 2018. Very glad I did. Most recipes were good and not to complicated. Devotions were great and right on target. I feel like the writer genuinely wants to help lead you through the fast rather than just sell a book. Highly recommend .

Just completed the Daniel Fast and LOVE THIS BOOK. If you are looking for guidance both spiritually and for what you can eat, this is the book. The recipes are awesome--I am continuing to use some of them now that the fast is over. I cannot express how easy it made my first Daniel Fast. It helped me stay focused on the Fast and the daily devotional helped me grow spiritually. I enjoyed the testimonies also. I highly recommend this book.

This is my first fast and Kristen makes it so easy with delicious recipes, meal plans and the daily devotionals. There wasn't one recipe that I tried that wasn't absolutely delicious. I also liked the Recipe notes after the recipe, the suggestions are very helpful. My favorite recipe is the Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato Soup. I know that I will be using these recipes even after the fast.

This is the third year my wife and I are spending three weeks with the Daniel Fast, and Kristen's book has been a major part of it every time. Her overview of the fast, how to deal with such a radical conversion in our eating, even if only for a specified period of time, is simple yet at times profound, interlacing the plan with growing closer to God (the undelrying purpose of the fast, after all). Also, becoming stronger and healthier in our diets! On this fast we feel amazing, even sleep better. With Kristen's program there is also a daily devotional you can subscribe to which arrives daily in our inbox, which has been invaluable in reminding us why we're doing this. The book has become a singificant reference for dozens of amazing recipes that are Daniel Fast appropriate and also incredibly delicious. Highly, highly recommend this book, and this program.
