The Art of The Last of Us by Dark Horse Books is a must for any Last of Us fan. The book is 176 pages and they load the pages with art so there's little wasted space. With this book you will get many variations of the characters and environments. Although with the characters I found that almost every single one is a frontal pose of a character with variations in clothing, the face, or something like that. This is not bad since their are a lot of them and they cover a lot of characters but I wish there were more angles and such, but none the less its still amazing.The Book is divided into 7 chapters.1. The Introduction is 2 pages and just talks about the creators making the game and stuff.2. Joel and Ellie is 16 pages and has lots of different poses and variations of the two. There is commentary by the artists about what went through their minds when making the sketches and such which really lets you understand what they were thinking when they made the characters. Also they have pictures of how they were going to have Ellie look but switched to how she actually does look so that was cool to see how they first wanted her to look.3.The Journey is 93 pages and has sketches and pictures of a bunch of characters and scenes that you encounter throughout the game. There's soldiers, thugs, some of the other main characters, and plenty of abandoned house and buildings. Their is lots of content here and the pages are jam packed. The concept art of the environments are really detailed and have excellent lighting.4. The Infected is 29 pages and has lots of the different infected monsters. The pictures put you up close and personal to the infected and lets you see all the grossest features. From the bumps, blood, scars, and everything else they made sure to show just how ugly/scary the infected are. This chapter was really cool to look at and highly detailed.5. The World is 6 pages and has really nothing to it except some signs and weapons which were not really all that great or detailed. There's bows, garden tools, guns, and pieces of metal for the weapons shown.6. Marketing is 14 pages and has the art they used to promote the game and its basically just some concept art like what they have on the cover of the game and such.7. The American Dream is 5 pages and is art from the comic book so if you like comic books you might enjoy this section since its just simple drawings comic book style.Overall this book is a must for any fan of the game. It has lots of character variations and artist comments which really help you know just what went through their minds when making the characters and such. The environmental art is awesome and highly detailed with excellent lighting and color. The scenes show everything from old farms, run down cities, or even the quarantine zone. The infected look gruesome and lifelike and its really gross the amount of detail they put in some of the pictures, but that is what makes this book so good. Finally if your looking for some good character art this book has loads of it and although its mostly all frontal view it still is quite nice to look at and has many variations and characters. I highly recommend this art book and found it to be one of the better game art books.

The Art of Last of Us is a wonderful art book to Naughty Dog's latest game. I also have the Uncharted 2 art book and I love that book. I love this one too.This book is packed with character designs and environment art. The concept art is top notch.All the characters and infected are drawn out in detail and colour. There are various designs for each character. Lots to see. The infected, if you have not played the game, are not traditional zombies. They have been infected by some deadly fungus that grows and consumes the human body. You get to see some interesting and scary designs that you would not get from typical zombies.The environment art are painted with astonishing amount of detail that makes everything seem so real. There are the devastated towns, rundown buildings, deserted streets and ransacked rooms. Most scenes depicted will make you wonder what the hell happened there. The level of realism you see here is unmatched even by big budget movie sets.Spoilers appear in the book either as text or pictures. So definitely play the game first before going through the book. Other than that, there's not much text except the occasional comments on the art and game.This is a fantastic video game art book. JUST BEAUTIFUL!This is certainly a big and beautiful assemble of the greatest conceptual artworks I ever saw together, I must say Naughty Dog have some of the most talented artists in the industry nowadays, the artworks are really beautiful and it's nice to see some earlier versions of characters and environments of the game in those pages, it really added more dept in the understanding of the game goal and artistic vision.Why not give credits for the artists?As I said, Naughty Dog have some the most talented artists in the industry nowadays, like Maciej Kuciara, James Paick, Aaron Limonick, John Sweeney, Eytan Zana, Shaddy Safadi, Marek Okon, Nick Gindraux, Hyoung Nam, and Alexandria Neonakis, people that worked hard to make this game beautiful but in the end, this compilation or celebration of great artworks end up not having a single artist name on it. It's a shame that they didn't gave the artists some recognition for their big hit as well. I just couldn't find credits for the artists anywhere in the book, just the directors are credited. I think it is a bit unfair and very close minded for a company with such a big creativity in making games.I know that from a company point of view give to much credit for a employee can be a path to lose them to another company, but in a internet generation of easy to find information, they should know that there are other and nicer ways to keep a employee happy enough to not leave the company. Anyway, just unfair.This is a GREAT BOOK! One of the best game art-books on the last 2 years.

I'm not a scholar. I don't consider myself to be super-intellectual. I started reading 12 Caesars because I love history and it sounded fascinating. I admit, however, the way it is formatted made it hard for me to enjoy and sometimes follow. I mentioned it to my friend who IS amazingly smart and well-versed in pretty much everything and he suggested I might enjoy I, Claudius since it is fiction based on the 12 Caesars and more readable (for me). I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was riveting and thought provoking. I learned more about ancient Roman culture and history and made some connections I hadn't made before about other ancient cultures of that time period. This book made me feel as if I was watching the story unfold right there. Now I do realize this is fiction and am always careful to take that into consideration, but from what I've read about the author, it seems he went to great effort to base it on as much historical supporting evidence that's available. I believe he probably closely created a book based in that time period as possible. It feels authentic (again, not a scholar nor a historian so I can only report my impressions). I definitely recommend it for any history buff. It was great and I'm just starting the next book that continues the story.

What is it about the Romans and their history that makes reading a book about their lives not only educational, but also very entertaining? I suppose a lot of it has to do with the people themselves. With all the intrigue, scheming, conspiracy and illicit affairs going on you tend to forget that these people actually existed in real-life and are not just characters you could easily find in a modern day soap opera. Itâ€™s thoughts such as these that ran through my mind as I read Robert Gravesâ€™ I, Claudius.While you did get all the intrigue surrounding Claudius, it wasnâ€™t at the expense of the quality of information in this â€œautobiographyâ€ by Claudius. This book may be about Claudiusâ€™ life and his account of the major events and people in his life, but the wealth of information about Roman life is impressive. Through Claudius, Graves provided details of what happened behind the scenes of the Senate and the various Emperors that have reign during his life. You get insight into the culture and political scene of the times. Reading Claudiusâ€™ narrative, I was really drawn into the intricate web of lies and conspiracies that were prevalent and by those who were the main perpetrators such as Livia, Claudiusâ€™ grandmother. While this is a historical account of Claudiusâ€™ time, you never get the sense that youâ€™re reading a history book. Having the book be an â€œautobiographyâ€ of Claudiusâ€™ enable Graves to tell historical events as if Claudius was telling a story. It prevented the book from having a stale and monotonous tone which wouldâ€™ve made it difficult for me to keep my attention.I appreciated the depth of information involved in this book. You can tell that time and research went into putting this book together. And to have it all told in such a way that you were able to learn while being entertained is what made this book an enjoyable read for me. With all the scheming and determined cast of characters, itâ€™s easy to forget these are actual historical figures. I suppose itâ€™s easy to read books such as these when those involved do things that make it difficult for you to turn away.

In my high school in the USA, Goodbye to All That: Graves' book about his service in the trenches of WWI was required reading and it was head shoulders above the other books on the required reading list. Fortunate;y for all of us, Graves survived WWI and went on to write many books about ancient Greece and Rome. Count Belisarius is one of the few that takes place after the Fall of Rome. It is about Belisarius the Byzantine Empire's greatest general who reconquered North Africa and Italy from the Vandals and Goths, but was hindered and eventually destroyed by his rivals, the courtiers around the Emperor, and by the insecure Emperor himself. As Graves notes at the beginning of this book, the story of Belisarius is well known, and he relied on more or less contemporary sources well known to scholars of early Byzantine history. What makes this book unique is Graves' literary genius which has produced a series of historical novels so readabe that they make learning a pleasure.

This book is for players who already know how to play TT. It doesn't include the TT rules. Ideal for intermediate-level players who want to progress up to "professional" level. This book describes all the major strokes and footwork. It's the only book that describes the various services both forehand and backhand. (Table Tennis from A to Z by Messinis contains only a cursory and theoritical examination of the services.). But the best part about this book is the one about how to shape up yourself for the tournament. The warm-up/warm-down exercises are great. The chapter on nutrition is excellent. The chapter on strategy is brilliant. Furthermore, the "tone" of this book is quite reader-friendly: it's like hearing the author speaking by your ears. In short, buy this book and I guarantee you'll never regret it.

This is the best table tennis instructional book I ever read. But this isn't saying much considering this is just the second book I've read and the first was completely useless.I can't remember the title of the first book but it used drawings to demonstrate strokes. The good thing about Winning Table Tennis is that it uses sequences of photographs which is much clearer in demonstrating how to hit a shot.My biggest disappointment was that only about the first third of the book is about teaching table tennis techniques (strokes, footwork etc...). The rest of the book includes segments on warmups, losing weight, carbohydrates, proteins and workouts, which was not entirely relevant for most readers I would have thought...and certainly not the reason I bought the book.Also, in illustrating strokes, any book has to realise that verbal descriptions are not that helpful. Instead, the heart and soul needs to be clear, comprehensive and sequential photographs. You can have a few words but these should not try to be comprehensive but rather just cover a few key points. This book only had photographs for some of the strokes, and the rest were completely written accounts - which wasn't good enough for me.Last gripe. I know that the author Danny Seemiller is a very accomplished table tennis player, and I like his spunk in championing his own grip etc... but I thought the following sentence"some elite playes, like J.O.Waldner and the author (Danny Seemiller), use sidespin bocks" was too self-serving and arrogant. I mean, sure he was no.17 in the world, but he was no Waldner.I still gave it 3/5 because there really aren't enough table tennis books out there...and this was the best I've seen.

This book is a historical narrative about the 1964 Indianapolis 500. Two excellent race car drivers tragically lost their lives in a fiery, chaotic accident at the end of the second lap, in view of thousands of spectators. The author expertly describes the number of activities, conditions and factors that lead up to that horrible moment, starting with events associated with the 1963 Indianapolis 500. It is rare for a book on racing to have such a sustained, engaging narrative. The arc of the book covers several months and many chapters examine deeply what was then a full month of action at the Speedway.At the center of the story are the two drivers, Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. Both these drivers were excellent and successful. The latter, a veteran; the former a rookie (at Indianapolis). Sachs was outgoing, an extrovert, a salesman, a conversationalist and one very fine race car driver, particularly at Indianapolis (he almost won in 1961). MacDonald was quiet, unassuming, even humble and yet a driver of such natural talent that if he had lived subsequent strong newcomers would have been compared to him.Regarding the book: Garner can write. He knows how to tell a story and structure a chapter so that it moves the plot ahead and keeps the reader interested. He is respectful of his subject. He seeks to be comprehensive; this is no summary of events, this is the full three hour movie, which is so rare in sports' histories.The reader learns much about the Indianapolis 500 circa 1964 and the key competitors of the era including A. J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, and Jim Clark.I've read it through twice now and have only one small quibble with one small fact that only matters to racing aficionados, Regarding Jim Hurtubise's almost fatal accident a week after the 500, Herk's car did not come to a rest upside down. Mr. Garner, got so much right that I only mention this to demonstrate an unbiased, objective review of an outstanding project.The author has earned and deserves congratulations for a well-researched book, respectful to its subject, written in such a way that it warrants interest beyond the close knit racing world.Highly recommended.

I was fourteen years old in 1964 and followed sports car racing through a couple of magazines and was quite familiar with the excitement Dave McDonald was generating in Cobra and King Cobra racing. My family had been Indy 500 fans forever; and I was excited about the rear-engine revolution imported from European F1. Ford was officially entering racing again, and McDonald looked to be their 'do-it-all' man - he not only raced Cobras, but was making a splash in stock car racing - and this day he was driving his first 500. I was certain that this was a race he would eventually win - if not this year, then some year soon. I was just as sure that Jimmy Clark would set records that would never be beaten in F1, and he had a good shot at winning the 500 this day with that Ford engine screaming behind him. Racing was a fine sport and winter was behind us and we could look forward to a fine summer and forget our prior brooding winter of grief and shame. That 1964 Memorial Day, I was ready to be filled with hope again, having lost so much the previous November. So I was listening to the 1963 Indy 500 on radio when Dave McDonald and Eddie Sachs perished in a huge black cloud that, I didn't realize, would hover over racing for more than two decades. That black cloud was a fitting metaphor for the entire 1960's. Before the decade was out, 50% of the most talented drivers (and statesmen) were gone, friends were dead from combat or car accidents, and it was pretty clear that hope and sanity had shuffled off into oblivion, driven off by confusion, loss and anger. This book provides the beginning details to that somewhat broader picture of America; and it sums up the month of May, 1964, while providing little details that put the time in perspective. Did you know that a top mechanic at the Indy 500 earned only a dollar an hour more than I, at fourteen, made that summer throwing hay bales onto wagons? That whole teams would spend their nights for the entire month sleeping on cots in basements of local Indianopolis people? That important decisions regarding driver and fan safety were made on the grounds that, if 13" tires were allowed, it would make the cars look funny? The book's a good read about a watershed moment in racing

Don't be put off by the title or the cover art. Mr. Garner has written a fine book not just about the 1964 Indianapolis 500, but of the cross currents of history that conspired on that fateful day without glorifying the incidents that took place or wallowing in the gothic tragedy. He certainly covers the accident but handles it as respectfully as it could be expected. More importantly, he writes a true book of history, something sorely missing in motorsports journalism. History is the "who", "where", "when", and most importantly, "why" of our past. So many in the motorsports field simply want to recount what happened without being brave enough to postulate the reasons and giving solid arguments to support those reasons. Mr. Garner puts forth many factors that conspired in 1964; the transition to a new technology (ie, rear-engined cars), the influx of drivers from different racing disciplines, the influx of money in the form of sponsorships and auto manufacturer support and a governing body that did not have the foresight to prepare for these changes. Mr. Garner has also given us a view into the lives of Dave MacDonald and Eddie Sachs (and others) and forces us to realize these were real mean with real lives and real families and yes, real faults, like the rest of us. It has been all to easy for fans over the years to blame one driver for the accident. Mr. Garner shows us that is too simple of an answer and that we should be prepared in the future so that this does not happen again.

The book is written by Professor George Gmelch of Union College in Schenectady, NY. It is a very simple book with little to no anthropological analysis on the surface. However, upon completing this book you will realize Gmelch's perfect and unintentional introduction to the anthropology of everyday life. That is to say, the Gmelch gives us 20 snapshots of people working in the tourism industry in Barbados. Gmelch brings us, their jobs, their home lives, their concerns and the things that bring them joy.Gmelch stumbles upon a fantastic way to introduce a culture. As I read this book (about 3 years ago, I am writing from memory which can only mean that this book was very good at leaving an impression), I thought that it would be great if other anthropologists and writers did this for each culture they study, as the lives of the people, their homes and concerns are surely one of the greatest insights into their culture.This book is generally about tourism, specifically about Caribbean tourism and the country of Barbados. I gave this book to my mother for her to read, as she is a regular big-boat cruise traveler. She loved the book. She told me it brought her a better awareness to the happenings outside of the cruise ship bubble. She was not shot down from ever going on cruises again, but rather took more consideration into planing her cruise, ecologically, economically and culturally.

This book is a simple, straight-forward, easy-to-read study of workers in the tourist industry in Barbados, employing oral history. The main body of the book is twenty brief, transcribed interviews from individuals positioned differently in the industry. The interviews are interesting, and offer illuminating insights into the views of workers themselves. The author is an anthropologist with considerable experience in fieldwork and oral history, who has been directing an ethnographic field school in Barbados. He has also written books on Bajan society and on Bajan emigrants. The book begins with an introductory chapter on tourism in general and Bajan tourism in particular, raising several issues for consideration. The second chapter provides an overview of the Barbados tourist industry, ending with a brief discussion of his research methods. There is also a concluding chapter, with generalizations based on the twenty interviews. The most striking point I got from reading this book is that the informants all seem to enjoy their jobs, and gain personal gratification from it, contrary to the critiques of many or most scholars. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in tourism or in the Caribbean.

We're talking serious yum. These recipes allow the fruit to shine, rather than burying the flavor in a lot of unnecessary "stuff."Don't get me wrong, I do like the occasional fancy dessert, but I'd rather have someone else make it. The pandowdy crust with bits of candied ginger is probably the best crust recipe I have ever come across. Beside, I learned something new. I had never made or eaten a pandowdy until I bought this book. The recipes are not overly sweet which is a big plus. When I see a recipe in other books with 2 1/2 cups of sugar and 2 or more sticks of butter, it is a real turn off. I have to keep everything gluten-free and the recipes are easy to convert to gluten-free flours.These recipes are something I can enjoy and still stay on a healthy track. I have tried several of the recipes so far and each one has been a keeper! This will become one of my favorite cookbooks.

I originally bought this book as an impulse item in a brick and mortar store because the photographs were so tempting. But, as I have continued try the recipes within one by one, I have never been disappointed. Arranged seasonally, the pages encourage you to bring home some delectably ripe fruit from the store or market and find a recipe that will bring out the best. Cobblers and crisps couldn't be easier to assemble, and the olive oil citrus cake that I made for a dinner party a couple of weeks ago produced raves. Rhubarb, oat and pecan crumble? Nectarine, boysenberry and almond crisp? Upside down pear chocolate cake? I have yet to go wrong with any of the delights in this book. I have purchased additional copies as gifts for bakers who appreciate the authors' expert layering of tart and sweet.

I have a lot of cookbooks and I add a few more to the collection every year. This one is a standout. Have you ever wanted to feature the wonderful fruit available at the farmer's market? This book will give you the ability to make knock out deserts that put the fruit forward. Most recipes are frankly on the easy side and don't require the skill to even make and roll out a pie crust (some do) but I've never been a fan of pie crust and the variety of ways to prepare and finish baked fruit deserts will amaze. Clear instructions will be of fantastic aid to even the most moderately trained in the kitchen.

I really love this cookbook. I buy cookbooks for two reasons, sometimes for really great recipes, and sometimes for really great pictures and inspiration. This book has the best of both worlds. I thought the pie recipe I had been using prior to buying this book was perfect, but this recipe beats it. It's so buttery and flaky, the crust tasted like a croissant. I'd definitely recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves fruit desserts.

I pre-ordered the book from Amazon after making Lemon Blueberry Buckle, from an adaptation of that recipe published in the local paper. I have alfeady made several recipes from the book, all but one of them were highly successful. The book is small (a big plus). Most recipes take up only one page. Most two page recipes are on facing pages. The photographs make me want to make almost every recipe. The book is deeply satisfying and comforting.I've tried the following recipes, all of which yielded a fresh, full flavored product with just enough sugar for a pleasant balance between tart and sweet.- Lemon Blueberry Buckle was a keeper, tart and sweet. It inspired me to buy the book.- Cherry Almond bars did not work.Since the recipe clains takes its inspiration from lemon bars, there must be an error. All lemon bars prebake the bottom crust and then either pour the filling on top or make a custard and then pour it on top. They all bake the crust for about 30 minutes and the ssembled bars until the top is set. The Cherry Almond bars really need a total redo. The cherry filling was very good but the bottom was soggy and the top was undercooked. I've written an email to Julie Richardson about the problem. They are deluged with comments and praise from readers. Since it was the my second recipe and the first was so sucessful, I decided to try another.- Vanilla-spiked plum Galette was extraordinary.With plums from the farmers market, it was both tart. Just be careful when making it - place the parchment paper on a well made of aluminum foil, otherwise the juice will spread over the oven and burn. I used vanilla sugar for the vanilla infusion.- Short Dough made a beautiful baked shell for a tart.I modified the recipe substituting sour cream for heavy cream.- Galette dough was much better than my old standby of Pasta Frolla by Flo Braker from Baking with Julia [Julia Child].On balance, the successful recipes are all keepers. Some (Quince, Apple, and Brown Butter Tarte) inspired me to try other recipes on the web. I made an a really good, elegant quince brown butter tarte -- a variation of a financier - my spouse said it was the best dessert ever that had made.I look forward to making and modifying more of the recipes from this book as the seasons change and different fruits become available in the farmer's market.

This book is worth its price for one recipe alone: the pear/hazelnut biscuit cobbler, but don't stop there. Fruit and something crunchy make the best desserts and this book is full of recipes that fit that bill. Recipes are divided by the seasons, a convenient way to reference what's fresh, local and seasonal. One of my favorite cookbooks.
