I am currently taking several courses in Buddhism, and one is taught by the author of this book. I just started that course and her teaching style seems down to earth and enjoyable, but I was slightly annoyed when I saw this book would be required reading for the class. The reason was simply that I've read many books on how to meditate before, and I am taking these classes to advance my knowledge of Tibetan Buddhist practices specifically and felt like this was a slight step backward in my knowledge. I based my entire assumption on the title "How To Meditate". But I dutifully ordered a used copy of it and prepared myself for yet another introduction to meditation book. Turns out the book is fantastic, but I have to say I dislike the title a lot. It doesn't do the book justice and it's such a generic title that I thought I had it all figured out before I even got it. I would have absolutely passed by this book if I hadn't been required to purchase it for the class.Yes, the book does offer instructions on how to meditate. And she does so in a very down to earth, accessible way. Plain language, and a very direct "how-to" that is missing from many other meditation intro books. How to sit, what to do with your eyes, hands, etc., what strange thoughts or distractions may occur and how to address these problems when they happen, and more. But there is SO much more to the book that I never would have discovered based on the title or even the description, and it's that other content that makes me especially happy. The first two chapters cover the how-to basics for the most part. The rest of the book is mostly specific Tibetan Meditations; meditations on the mind, analytical meditations, and visual meditations. Then another entire section on specific Tibetan prayers and other devotional practices. This was exactly what I wanted to learn in the course but did not expect from this book based on the title.I feel it's somewhat important to stress that these are meditations and prayers that are mostly from the Tibetan tradition. That's not to say that anyone can't enjoy them, you certainly can, and the instruction is presented in a way that anyone can benefit from, but some of the references might be very new or even strange if you aren't already practicing the Tibetan tradition or even in Buddhism at all. For example, she includes meditations on Tonglen, meditation on Avalokiteshvara, Vajrasattva purification, etc. It's the very thing I love about the book since I've been trying to learn and compile these exact practices from various sources, but I'm not sure it would be the best choice for someone who just wants a secular introduction to basic meditation. That's why I dislike the title so much; people like me wanting specific Tibetan practices will easily miss it, and those just wanting a basic intro to general meditation might end up with a bunch of Tibetan stuff they didn't really need. It's kind of like buying a book called "How to Cook" but finding out it's mostly about how to cook Thai food.Back to the instruction aspect: she adds to the basic instruction in the first two chapters by offering more specific instructions at the beginning of the various practices, and then gradually incorporates what you have learned from previous chapters as you progress through the book. So you learn specific meditations, practices and prayers AND get instruction on how to do them. It's easy to google the names of any of these Tibetan practices and get lots of results, but not many that include HOW to do the practice in addition to the recitations and visuals. And she simplifies it nicely so it's suitable for beginners to these practices. Chapters are short and easy to digest. This book is going to be a huge help in aiding me to establish a more disciplined set of practices, there are some for daily use (refuge prayer, dedication of merit, etc), others for special situations like times of illness (Medicine Buddha), etc.So I love the book and am very happy to have an easy to understand guide that teaches these practices and am looking forward to learning the ones I don't know and incorporating them into my routine. I still think it should be named something more accurate like "How To Do Tibetan Practices" or "A Collection of Tibetan Buddhist Meditations and Prayers Including Instructions" or something along those lines. But if you don't mind that they are Tibetan Buddhist oriented, or if you are looking for a Tibetan Buddhist specific book that covers basic meditations and prayers, this will be a wonderful resource. I'm very glad I was required to purchase this, it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

Two years ago, I developed a very serious interest in techniques for prayer and meditation. There were no sources of support in my particular locale, so I went on a search through Amazon to find the best practical guide to meditation. At that time, I had no special interest in the belief systems supporting particular approaches to either prayer or meditation. It made no difference whether the approach was Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, or secular. I just wanted a down to earth, nuts and bolts kind of book that gave me guidance on the actual practice of something like meditation. This was, and is today, the best book that I could find. It eventually served as an entry point into Mahayana Buddhism and, more broadly, into the tradition of contemplative mysticism within both Buddhism and Chistianity. Ms. McDonald typically begins each of her chapters on a particular kind of meditation with an explanation of the underlying reasons for it, followed by a careful walk-through of the beginning, middle, and ending. Although she introduces Buddhist concepts, she also keeps her framework open-ended and suggests where meditators might depart from a strict Buddhist style when the concepts (like reincarnation) seem too forbidding. After introductory material, the book broadly address samatha (mindfulness, focussing), vipassana (insight meditation), and vajrayana (the use of imagery in meditation). She makes things very easy to understand, and buying into her approach really doesn't require that one become a Buddhist. The only thing she did not address was planning out a sequence of meditations in some kind of logical fashion. But this is a minor point. The book is not a "read" as such. It's more of a handbook to be consulted in the course of establishing meditative practices. I find that I have never really stopped reading the book. I just keep re-reading passages for clarification, and embarking on new passages when I feel I am ready. The usual advice for someone meditating is to work with a teacher or guru. That isn't always possible, though, and in those cases this book is the next best thing. Those who buy this book might also visit the website for the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayanan Tradition. It used to be the case that you could obtain free of charge audiobooks of Ms. McDonald conducting classes on meditation.Ms. McDonald is a magnificent teacher. I'm pleased to be her student even though we have never met, and I hope that my own feeble efforts at meditation eventually honor her.

Reading this book has been a real inspiration. I have a better knowledge of how to properly meditate and i like how it teachings me different ways to meditate. Many people either want to mediate but don't know how to either get started or what exactly to do. With the help of this book it will answer all your question about the how, when, where and what you need to do to get started with your meditation.

BORING READ. DIDN'T HELP ME LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT HOW TO MEDITATE. MAY END UP SELLING IT

Great book highly recommend

little TO COMPLEX FOR ME.

Wife said she liked it and has learned alot

Besides watching and listening to Robina Courtin videos, this is my second choice for learning meditation so far.

Review

"I am currently using Valerie M. Warrior’s Greek Religion: a Sourcebook and her Roman Religion: a Sourcebook for my class on Paganism. They are absolutely outstanding, in terms of the selection, the range of topics, and the level of detail provided. I will keep using these as long as I keep teaching the class (I hope for decades!). I would recommend them to anyone. Perfect to supplement a class based mainly on lectures, and to get students digging into the real sources of our knowledge and engaging with them." —Jack Mitchell, Department of Classics, Dalhousie University"Professor Warrior’s book is a useful anthology of readings which, diligently chosen and intelligently arranged, display the essential elements of Roman religion in its most interesting period." ―Christopher McDonough, Boston College

Well written and researched

Warrior does a very good using examples to explain Roman religion. Especially for someone who is new to this area of history. It isn't overwhelming with details, but it has enough to get the main points across. A very well rounded, basic book on Roman religion and good basis point for anyone looking to understand it.

this is a sourcebook of short excerpts relating to various aspects of Roman Religion, including astrology, sacrifice, the role of the family cults, and the like.I found the selection to be good and the translations accessible. I think this is a very helpful book on the subject. Highly recommended.

In 129 pages, Ms Warrior does an excellent job with an introduction to Religious Life in Ancient Rome. She covers the major aspects of religion and how it worked for the Romans without getting bogged down in the immense details. It enlightens and alludes to the depth of information about Roman religion while keeping a very readable text and avoiding many pitfalls of academic writing. An excellent read!

A vast assortment of characters, one crazy scene after another, lots of twists, and, at the end, redemption. It's such a fun read! Plus, it's a tribute to Lloyd Alexander. What more could you ask for?

Very fun to read. I will read it again. Silly and elegant at the same time. Hated to see it end.

The Emperor's Ostrich, by Julie Berry, is a whimsical adventure with humor and quirky, lovable characters. While its intended audience is middle-grade readers, it will also appeal to younger readers as well as adults who are young-at-heart. Set in the Empire of Camillion, it is a fun romp through both the castle and the English countryside, and is reminiscent of both fairy and folktales of yore. Even so, this story is also both contemporary and unique in its telling. The adventure begins when the spoiled, self-obsessed Emperor of Camillion goes missing from the castle. Soon after we are introduced to Begonia, who lives in the countryside and has lost her cow Alfalfa. Begonia, far from being a damsel in distress, embarks on a determined search to find Alfafa. Along the way she encounters a mustard maker and a mapmaker that are really ancestral spirits in disguise - and a poetic, aptly self-defined "hopeless romantic" boy named Key. These characters, in addition to being both funny and kind, are helpful to her on her journey, even though Begonia is at first quite certain she will travel alone. This is a story, then, of friendship and the power of kindness as much as it is about having a grand adventure. It is also about embracing differences and loving each other not in spite of but because of them. This is also perhaps the only book where you will find a cow and an ostrich in love. And why not? Berry is showing young readers that love is possible anywhere, between anyone - and that life is always better enjoyed with our friends. With fast-paced, witty prose, characters that jump off the page and frolicking fun, The Emperor's Ostrich is a unique tale with a big heart sure to be enjoyed by many readers.

This book caught my eye on a display at our local library, and the blurb on the back suggesting fans of Lloyd Alexander and Miyazaki would love it sounded promising. I decided to bring it home on the off chance that my highly-sensitive 8-year-old would give it a try (though my hopes weren't too high because of the fact that I know he's not read for Lloyd Alexander yet and won't try watching most Miyazaki films). Now I'm here to buy a copy of it for his bookshelf (by his adamant request). He says it's the best book in the world, and between all the laughs he had while reading it and all the discussions about the characters he initiated, along with how much I enjoyed it myself, I'm not inclined to argue with that. This is a funny, fun, and delightful book, especially as a read aloud! And it opened up a lot of conversations about they way people are in the real world, especially about growing to like people that at first seem bothersome and why on earth someone would lie and deceive people the way one of the antagonists does.

Thanks to the #kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book - all opinions are my own. This was an engaging, well-paced story that I really enjoyed. It starts off in the palace, where we meet the emperor's cupbearer's young second assistant, who is there to bring the emperor milk. The emperor, as it turns out, is a spoiled brat. By the end of the first chapter, both the emperor and an ostrich have gone missing (and we get the sense that something suspicious and/or magical is going on).Meanwhile, we meet Begonia, the put-upon responsible daughter, sent off on a quest to retrieve a missing dairy cow. Along the way she meets up with Key (a boy) and other assorted characters who reappear later in the story. Eventually, Begonia and Key meet Lumi (the emperor, who has been enchanted and cannot say his name or the word "emperor"). Hijinks ensue though (of course) everything is eventually right in the end. This was fun to read. It took me a few chapters to really find my groove but once I did, I was hooked. I wanted to find out how this crazy cast of characters would all come together and work things out. I wanted to know who the bickering spirits were - after all, they instigated the events that we follow. And I wanted to know how the horrible emperor could redeem himself. I thought the writing was very well executed and the pacing was excellent. Finally, to fellow readers: pay attention to the chapter titles! I typically skim over them very quickly, but they really guide you through this story, so don't ignore them.

5 Snorts should be the new rating system for books of this caliber. I read this book with my seven-year-old and that’s exactly how many times she laughed herself into giggling fits complete with snorts. With silly words such as Chrysanthemumsy, smelephants, frynoceroses, and postrich it might be impossible not to giggle. A story that starts with a spoiled king exiling all the palace cats promises outlandish repercussions and an off the path sort of adventure. Berry does not disappoint. Her characters are rich in eccentricities which add to their many dilemmas. Begonia, the young dairymaid, tackles her quest for the family’s missing cow with determination, a healthy curiosity, and a touch of misgiving. Along the way she encounters Key, a romantic would-be-rescuer of damsels in distress set on making the self-rescuing Begonia his latest project. Throw in a strange man in dirty pajamas, a monstrous bird, a small cat, meddling ancestors, castle conspirators, a terrible circus owner, and a nervous mother and voila you have Berry’s homage to Lloyd Alexander. Told with a witty voice yet simple enough for young children to comprehend, this book is a humorous and enjoyable read where, most importantly, the cats and the ostrich live happily ever after.

I read this book in one sitting, long after the lights should have been turned off. I felt like not doing so would have been a disservice to Paul Kalanithi. After reading the book I felt stunned and hopeful in equal parts. Stunned because of the realization that someone as prodigiously talented and eloquent as Dr. Kalanithi was taken from the world at such an early age. Hopeful because even in his brief life of thirty-seven years he showcased what we as human beings are capable of in our best incarnations. His family can rest assured that he will live on through his book. When Breath Becomes Air details Dr. Kalanithi's life as a neurosurgeon and his fight against advanced lung cancer. Even in his short life he achieved noteworthy recognition as a scholar, a surgeon, a scientist and now - posthumously - as a writer. The book is a tale of tribulations and frank reflections. Ultimately there's not much triumph in it in the traditional sense but there is a dogged, quiet resilience and a frank earthiness that endures long after the last word appears. The tribulations occur in both Dr. Kalanithi's stellar career and his refusal to give in to the illness which ultimately consumed him.The first part of the book could almost stand separately as an outstanding account of the coming of age of a neurosurgeon and writer. Dr. Kalanithi talks about his upbringing as the child of hardworking Indian immigrant parents and his tenacious and passionate espousal of medicine and literature. He speaks lovingly of his relationship with his remarkable wife - also a doctor - who he met in medical school and who played an outsized role in supporting him through everything he went through. He had a stunning and multifaceted career, studying biology and literature at Stanford, then history and philosophy of medicine at Cambridge, and finally neurosurgery at Yale.Along the way he became not just a neurosurgeon who worked grueling hours and tried to glimpse the very soul of his discipline, but also an eloquent writer. The mark of a man of letters is evident everywhere in the book, and quotes from Eliot, Beckett, Pope and Shakespeare make frequent appearances. Accounts of how Dr. Kalanithi wrested with walking the line between objective medicine and compassionate humanity when it came to treating his patients give us an inside view of medicine as practiced at its most intimate level. Metaphors abound and the prose often soars: When describing how important it is to develop good surgical technique, he tells us that "Technical excellence was a moral requirement"; meanwhile, the overwhelming stress of late night shifts, hundred hour weeks and patients with acute trauma made him occasionally feel like he was "trapped in an endless jungle summer, wet with sweat, the rain of tears of the dying pouring down". This is writing that comes not from the brain or from the heart, but from the gut. When we lost Dr. Kalanithi we lost not only a great doctor but a great writer spun from the same cloth as Oliver Sacks and Atul Gawande. It is in the second part of the book that the devastating tide of disease and death creeps in, even as Dr. Kalanithi is suddenly transformed from a doctor into a patient. It must be slightly bizarre to be on the other side of the mirror and intimately know everything that is happening to your body and Dr. Kalanithi is brutally frank in communicating his disbelief, his tears, his hope and his understanding of his fatal disease. It's worth noting that this candid recognition permeates the entire account. Science mingles with emotion as compassionate doctors, family and a battery of medications and tests become a mainstay of life. The painful uncertainty which he documents - in particular the tyranny of statistics which makes it impossible to predict how a specific individual will react to cancer therapy - must sadly be familiar to anyone who has had experience with the disease. As he says, "One has a very different relationship with statistics when one becomes one". There are heartbreaking descriptions of how at one point the cancer seemed to have almost disappeared and how, after Dr. Kalanithi had again cautiously made plans for a hopeful future with his wife, it returned with a vengeance and he had to finally stop working. There is no bravado in the story; as he says, the tumor was what it was and you simply experienced the feelings it brought to your mind and heart. What makes the book so valuable is this ready admission of what terminal disease feels like, especially an admission that is nonetheless infused with wise acceptance, hope and a tenacious desire to live, work and love normally. In spite of the diagnosis Dr. Kalanithi tries very hard - and succeeds admirably - to live a normal life. He returns to his surgery, he spends time with his family and most importantly, he decides to have a child with his wife. In his everyday struggles is seen a chronicle of the struggles that we will all face in some regard, and which thousands of people face on a daily basis. His constant partner in this struggle is his exemplary wife Lucy, whose epilogue is almost as eloquent as his own writing; I really hope that she picks up the baton where he left off.As Lucy tells us in the epilogue, this is not some simple tale of a man who somehow "beats" a disease by refusing to give up. It's certainly that, but it's much more because it's a very human tale of failure and fear, of uncertainty and despair, of cynicism and anger. And yes, it is also a tale of scientific understanding, of battling a disease even in the face of uncertainty, of poetry and philosophy, of love and family, and of bequeathing a legacy to a two year old daughter who will soon understand the kind of man her father was and the heritage he left behind. It's as good a testament to Dr. Kalanithi's favorite Beckett quote as anything I can think of: "I can't go on. I will go on".Read this book; it's devastating and heartbreaking, inspiring and edifying. Most importantly, it's real.

When Breath Becomes Air (2016) made a huge splash, becoming a NYT bestseller, etc. Even Bill Gates read (and reviewed, and loved) it. In it, Dr. Paul Kalanithi basically tells his life’s story in two main threads: how he came to choose, learn, and practice medicine, and how he’s fighting late-stage lung cancer in only his mid-30s. The situation has (had…) all the makings of a kind of hero’s journey, and no wonder it grabbed people’s attention. A superstar young doctor dying of lung cancer right after bringing home a new baby, imagine that. But as far as I can tell, the Paul Kalanthi described in the book would want me to write an honest critique of his work, and I can’t be 100% positive. I have no problem with the lofty philosophical bits, but many other prospective readers will. Kalanithi seems to think that his decision to study medicine is deeply interesting (he studied literature first, and first bristled at the thought since there were doctors in the family). But I didn’t care so much – who among us hasn’t changed their college major or master’s program once or thrice? Depending on your existing worldview, you’ll either find Kalanithi’s ultimate choice of neurosurgery as either inspired or eye-rollingly hubristic.Kalanthi is interested in the mind-body problem, and I know that he would have studied it specifically. But, disappointingly, he can’t muster much more to say about it than platitudinous rhetorical questions (“There must be a way, I thought, that the language of life as experienced – of passion, of hunger, of love – bore some relationship, however convoluted, to the language of neurons, digestive tracts, and heartbeats.”)For someone who decided (years ago, as a student) that “human relationality” “undergirds meaning,” it’s a little rich that Kalanithi had become estranged from his wife prior to his diagnosis and then barely mentions her pregnancy in passing. I do believe it’s noble that Kalanithi tried to relate to his patients on a human level, especially seeing as how he operates on what he takes to be the seat of their souls. But readers are just as likely to feel alienated by Kalanithi’s focus on strangers to the detriment of those close by. It’s like an overdone character in a book: doctor too busy caring for patients to care for his own wife, oops! The very last paragraphs Paul wrote are about his infant daughter Cady, and the joy she brought him as he died. But that’s why those bits seem a little surprising. Perhaps, due to Kalanithi’s increasing frailty, the part of the journey that turned him from arrogant doctor into sated family man simply went mostly unwritten. To be clear, producing a single book that encapsulates everything someone with a full professional and personal life might want to say is a totally Herculean task (especially to undertake while already critically/terminally ill). It’s certainly no surprise that When Breath Becomes Air isn’t completely satisfactory in that regard. You don’t have to be a perfect person to write a good book, either. But since this is a book review…The highlight reel of Kalanithi’s life doesn’t make you feel especially connected to him, but you feel obligated to preemptively develop some empathy because you know what’s coming next. His experiences training as a doctor are sort of depressing and cliched: start ambitious, end desensitized. His experiences as a student shouldn’t have to be that significant. But because his life is turning out to be rather short and he was a student for most of it, they become forced into significance. I don’t know exactly what I’d want anyone, dying or not, to say about “human relationality” vis a vis meaning in life (personally, I don’t think there’s any such meaning to be had, but the question comes up often enough that there has to be something to say).Throughout, Kalanithi’s writing is alternately beautiful and cringe-worthily heavy-handed (“in taking up another’s cross, one must sometimes get crushed by the weight”). It’s clear that he’s trying to find a comfortable writing voice (while also grappling with the weightiest possible subject matter), and under such pressure. What a shame that he got only an ill-fated Titanic crack at writing a book. If this material had spanned a few decades instead, who knows how it could have come out.I did especially enjoy (???) the section on glioblastoma, from a neurosurgeon’s point of view. It helped me to more fully envision the events that unfolded around my family member’s recent diagnosis. The epilogue, by Paul’s widow Lucy Kalanithi, is quite beautiful (a number of Amazon reviewers like it better than the rest of the book). It helps to drive home that Paul is gone, his life’s previous work (doctoring), new work (writing), and would-have-been-future-work (parenting) all left unfinished. She too must find her voice for this task under immense pressure, kudos for that. I have only begun to dip a toe into the mental fog of grief and it’s enough to make you forget how to brush your teeth, let alone how to write something huge numbers of strangers would want to read. All of the above notwithstanding, I read the book very quickly and definitely cried at the end.Read this book if you’re interested in how a doctor thinks about his own death and if you don’t mind stories without silver linings.Don’t read this book if you’re very put off by arrogance or intellectualism.

At the age of thirty-six, Paul Kalanithi is diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. “When Breath Becomes Air” is his unfinished memoir. From an early age, Paul became interested and searched for what makes life meaningful. This book walks us through some of the profound moments of Paul’s life, what he saw and how he felt, and how these events impacted and shaped his life.It was Paul’s love of literature, and his interest in biological philosophy that would one day lead him to become a neurosurgeon. Books and words connect people and it’s this connection – relationships – that make life meaningful. The process of experiencing life occurs in the brain, but sometimes the brain is broken or isn’t working properly. Paul wanted to help people, and to understand for himself, just what makes life worth living. The beautifully written epilogue, which was written by his wife Lucy, will break your heart, and give you hope at the same time. Here are a couple of quotes from this section."… [W]e knew that one trick to managing a terminal illness is to be deeply in love-to be vulnerable, kind, generous, grateful.""I expected to feel only empty and heartbroken after Paul died. It never occurred to me that you could love someone the same way after he was gone, that I would continue to feel such love and gratitude alongside the terrible sorrow, the grief so heavy that at times I shiver and moan under the weight of it."This was a beautiful story that made me cry, it made me think, it made me appreciate life, and I will never be the same because I read it.
