As in Dragonology, pull-out documents, sundry flaps, and other novelty elements (including a "sample of mummy cloth" and a game of Egyptian checkers) will have children breathlessly anticipating each page turn. Even so, this seems to lack the cohesive artistic purpose that distinguished its predecessor. The images often appear overly slick, compromising the notion that they have been sketched on the fly by members of the expedition, and a fantastical frame story about the "lost tomb of Osiris" undermines the informational content, despite an awkward concluding attempt to separate fact from fiction. Dragonology's broad crossover success probably won't be reincarnated here, but the allure of the subject matter and the luxe packaging is likely to be considerable. One of the best purchases I've made in a while. My 8 year old son hates reading but he can't put this book down. He loves the pull out letters and all the envelopes with hidden maps. He loves the big red diamond on the front cover and he keeps telling me we need to plan a trip to Egypt so he can discover all kinds of treasure. This book has opened up his eyes to Egyptology and created a huge spark of interest in learning about other parts of the world.

Even if youâ€™re not into Egyptian history you would appreciate all that this book has to offer! There is a surprise on every page, Little card inserts or fake letters. Set up like a personal journal of an explorer who tucked away little momentous, even the cover is awesome!Let me also add that the quality of this book is supreme!

Our grandchildren love this treasure tome of Egyptology set up like an actual journal with "real" documents, beautiful illustrations, and the personality of the archeologist! The content captures the mystery and wonder the explorer experiences and draws the reader in. Very educational and engaging, even for adults. My daughter is incorporating this book as part of the curriculum on ancient civilizations as she homeschools our first grader grandson. Adventure in the form of a book!

8 year old nephew loves these books! Perfect age to enjoy these books. They are beautifully done with so much detail and lots of information--much more interactive and interestingly educational than most books. Well worth the price.

This is a great book. My son got it for Christmas and loves it. We originally saw it in a Borders book store(price was alot more than at Amazon)and my son looked at it for almost an hour while we shopped. He just loved all the postcards and drawings and heiroglyphs that are on just about every page. The book is written as a journal from an amatuer Egyptologist who goes on a journey looking for what they believe is the tomb of Osiris. The whole expedition disappears and years later her niece has the journal published. You'll love all the little letters, cards and drawings that are inside and makes the book come to life. The ology series is fantastic. My son also has the Dragonolgy book which he loves as well. He really enjoys these books and is already asking for Piratology and Wizardology. I think this is a great book for kids since they really get into reading the book.

So beautiful, very well made, and so much to explore with this book. My 9 yr old has really enjoyed reading it & showing everyone all the neat things it has to offer.

I bought this for my 12 year old daughter who is obsessed with egyptology. I am previously seen the book at Barnes and Noble and this is much cheaper. I like how there are pockets and things to take out while she is also learning. This is kind of like a young adult pop-up book. I would highly recommend it.

My son requested this book for his birthday. I enjoyed leafing through it prior to wrapping it for him. He was very pleased with it.

An interesting work. . . . It speaks of how conditions can be changed and perhaps improved by "nudging" people. Rather than "beating up" on people, subtly nudge them. Fascinating reading and very provocative. Is nudging good? Or manipulative?The authors, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, faculty at the University of Chicago, define a "nudge" as (Page 6): ". . .any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives." Indeed, they define their perspective as "libertarian paternalism." They believe in freedom but also wish to use "nudges" to induce people to improve their health, and live longer and happier.One simple example? Has any male ever used a urinal with a fly painted onto it? This simple nudge reduces "spillage" by 40% as males involuntarily try to hit the "target." In the process, there is a benefit, less smelliness and messiness in the restroom.The book applies the nudge argument to investments, health, school choice, organ donation, the environment, marriage, and so on. In each case, they try to show how nudges and libertarian paternalism can improve the quality of life of individuals as well as providing social benefits.Questions do arise, as the authors themselves admit. Is this a manipulative approach? Do we subtly manipulate people into doing things that they might not voluntarily wish to do? Thaler and Sunstein address these issues. Each reader will have to determine how well they succeed. A provocative and fascinating work, well worth reading.

The point is very clear. We all have preconditioned manners of making decisions and instead of having to choose from thousands of options it makes more sense to nudge us to a more common ground than to leave us confused and frustrated. This of course is on condition that there is pure transparency of all the options. If you have ever read any books about psychology or studied the subject or have read Daniel Kahnemanâ€™s book Thinking Fast and Slow, than this book will not provide you a lot of new insight. It looks at a lot of old and some recent researches about how people who think theyâ€™re making rational decisions are in reality not and have pretty predictable decision patterns. The book then goes on to recommend how society could be better if we followed some type of Paternal Libertarianism where the ones providing choses like Insurance companies or government services nudge persons to make smarter decisions while being transparent of all the options and not hiding any of them. I agree with them almost 100%. Most of their suggestions and examples make sense as long as the ones nudging are 100% transparent. If youâ€™re anything like me, you will say the book is just okay and you will not be blown away by any Wow moments. So you can either read the book or save time and just speak to someone who read the book and have a nice long discussion with them.

Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler andâ€Ž Cass R. Sunstein has a simple premise. Unlike classical economic theory, where people are fully rational and always do things in their best interest, we are really lazy, uninformed, and unmotivated. We make bad decision because we lack information, or space out, or are too stupid to investigate what descisions will make our lives better.Intuitively, this view appeals to me. One example: create online retirement forms with a default setting which generally benefit employees, rather than no setting at all. Most people don't really understand their retirement plans, if they even have one. So make their laziness work for them.Of course, the â€œLibertarian Paternalismâ€ proposed in this work is problematic. Who makes the choices that we get to choose from? Canâ€™t "they" rig the system for their benefit and not ours?Despite this, I think the authorâ€™s view of human nature is sound, and can lead to more intelligent discussions about what we, as a species and individuals in that species, can hope to accomplish.

No wonder Richard Thaler's work won him the NÃ¶bel Prize in Economics! Built on the earlier work founding Behavioral Economics by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tvarsky which de-throned the "Rational Actor" model of humans in Classical Economics, Kahneman and Tvarsky, joined by Paul Slovic, showed human thinking is hard-wired in evolution, beset by Heuristics and Biases which are provably non-rational. They answer the question often provoked by observations of others clearly acting against their self-interest. There has been 35 years of continuing research in this area, a NÃ¶bel for Kahneman, even showing that Capuchin monkeys are hard-wired native economic thinkers and choosers. We act, as evolution indicates, for action in the short term, primarily in the lower level, fast thinking brain and with heuristics/algorithms sufficient to meet the test of "Probably Approximately Correct", with book of this name by Leslie Valiant. Humans are not randomly irrational, but predictably irrational, which is what makes The Nudge work effectively.Thaler gives us an alternative to formal control systems for humans based on rules, laws, behavioral/operant conditioning, "shoulds, oughts, musts". Humans ignore or rebel against the rules, and deny consequences for short term gains.Thaler's "Nudge" is the alternative, assuming people will act in their self-interest without depending or using rationality or reason. Thaler shows in his reserach and presents in his book how to shape choice using the newly discovered laws of predictable irrationality, or choice shaping.

Anna Quindlen has a way with words. I "read" this as part of my book club last month and really enjoyed it. Sometimes the narrator on audible books can really make or break how you end up feeling about the book and in this case, it was very well done. Some other reviewers have complained about the first half of the book being too mundane but I felt really drawn into the story and loved the character development as we learned about the family members and their individual personalities. The second half of the book is very emotional and heart-wrenching as the main character learns to adjust to this horrific event in her life. Overall, a well developed story, exceptionally written and relatable.

A lot of this book is just the day-to-day life of a family, but I enjoy walking in others' shoes through books, so I liked it. The rest of the book is about something unexpected, and this something plus the results of that have stayed with me for a couple of weeks now. I would give the book five stars if I thought it was a book for everyone, but I think some people may not want to read such a sad story.

And it took me a little while to find the rhythm of it. It seemed as if everything was being told in snapshots. Grief snapshots of time with an explanation of the picture. The main character was a woman with a husband and three children. She is a good person, in the way we are all good. Her family was her entire Center. And that is what I came away knowing about her. She did other things but her family was her entire Center. I didn't feel as if any other character had that. A fleshing out. They felt incomplete for me. It took a bit for me to understand that this book is about her. Entirely about her. About her after. I didn't realize how emotionally I had connected until I found myself crying. It was a very good read. The only other Anna quindlen books I've read is black and blue. I will be reading another

Well-written, of course. Beautiful characters. Again, of course. From the beginning the reader knows someone is going to die or be maimed for life, so I was constantly guessing who it might be, but you donâ€™t find out what tragedy befalls until half-way through the book. Do not read ahead!!! Anna Quindlen is a masterful story teller and Iâ€™ll read one of her happier books next time, but this one is amazing. Donâ€™t miss it.

By the time the climax of the story came, I was so involved with the characters they felt like personal friends and I needed a box of tissues. Mary Beth, the mother who tells the story, is forced to examine her actions and her motives in this poignant tale. The first part of this great story might seem a little slow, but stick with it. The rewards are great.

Then Quindlen blasts us out of the water and the story moves away from what we mistakenly view as the climax to focus on the inner life of one woman trying to continue on when her world has been blown to bits. This story is about family, friends, love, loss, and most of all: life. I highly recommend this deeply compelling story to all readers.

This was a very good book that held my interest throughout. It built from a slow beginning to points where I had trouble putting it down. The ratings from my book club were a bit mixed, as the story line came close (at some points) to our own life experiences. It led to a lot of compare and contrast discussion as well as, how I would have, how I have, managed some of the issues detailed in the story line. I would recommend it for a book club selection as lively discussion is so much desired and the range of human emotions is such that everyone will find a talking point.

Anna Quindlan excels at capturing realistic emotional situations and creating characters that seem like people you might know. I realize that I am late coming to the â€˜Handmaidâ€™ party. It has been my intention to read it for some long time, but for some reason that I donâ€™t fully understand, I was intimidated by the gravity of the book. I really wanted to be impressed, but Atwoodâ€™s view of a dark dystopian society left me depressed, confused and ultimately bored.I confess, I couldnâ€™t finish the book. I couldnâ€™t force myself to endure more than 115 pages peppered with complete and unnecessary gibberish. â€˜If I have an egg, what more can I want?â€™ There are tons of this fluff.Atwoodâ€™s view of the future, and I assume thatâ€™s what I think we must consider that she intends, is poppycock. A nightmare with no beginning, middle or end. If this is what is in store for us, count me out.I was interested in a storyline or two along the way, but the author refused to develop them, instead droning on and on about meaningless details in the heroineâ€™s life, or existence.I couldnâ€™t go any further. My mind kept drifting to all the really entertaining stories out there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. Why was I wasting precious time reading tripe?

I first read The Handmaid's Tale around the time it was published in 1986. I was just 22, a sheltered young thing. I recall wondering what everyone was raving about, since only the top story layer of the book connected for me. Now, with decades of life experience behind me, I see that this is a deeply moving, complex book. I'm so glad I decide to read again just at this moment in time.You would think that something written thirty years ago would seem dated. But that wasn't the case for me. If anything, I think there are so many things imagined in the book which have become more possible today instead of less. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale that a large art of the population ignored or misunderstood.More than ever, we should be reading this and sharing it with the young women in our lives. And discussing it with them, so they see more of the depth than my 22-year-old self did.Margaret Atwood imagined a world where a totalitarian power went into action against foreign zealots and their own people's "wanton" behavior. This power was meant to make the world better, but it also created a world of highly distinct "haves" and "have nots."She says, â€œBetter never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.â€ It might be just me (although I suspect not) but this sure sounds like what we often hear today on the news and in conversations.Reading this at the end of 2016 after a brutal election cycle, the following quote from Atwood seems both wise and horrible. Have we not been hearing about people who feel invisible?â€œWe were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories"Atwood's Republic of Gilead gives people one-dimensional functions. Correction - she gives women one-dimensional functions. They are Wives, Marthas, Handmaids, Aunts, or Unwomen (and a few more which would be spoilers). Unwomen are rebels, likely to be banished to the toxic waste dumps of the colonies. Everyone else plays a part in the singular female focus - procreation. As I read, I wondered what category I'd fall into should I have the bad luck to land in Gilead. The women there have no layers of life or experience. They are expected only to fulfill their narrow role.Why is procreation such a focus? Because of falling birth rates among white people. This book doesn't discuss race except one small spot near the end. It's as if there is only one race in Gilead. And the only people in that race with any power are men.The main character, Offred (literally of Fred named after the Commander she serves) is the perfect blend of weak and strong. She tells us of her past and says, â€œWhen we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.â€ But her life is not beautiful. And Atwood straddles the line of past and present, sending back and forth in a way that keeps you wanting more. Just as Offred wants more. Just as we all want more for ourselves and the generations of women coming after us.If you read this book long ago, pick it up again. If you haven't yet read it, move it up to the top of your TBR. Buy it for friends. Buy for your sons and daughters. Use it to teach and to learn what kind of world we could be if we stop valuing the diversity of all people.

Perfect last line to this book as I was left with so many questions at the end...the first of which was simply, "Huh?".This book confused me. Given all of the hype around it, I was expecting much more from this book. It was decent and I can completely understand how it would translate well into a mini-series or movie...but I just couldn't get my head around how/why things changed so quickly in society...over night, all women's rights were taken away but there seemed to be little information as to who or why. I was further confused by tourists coming into Gilead...why were there fully functioning societies outside of Gilead that seem to have been unaffected by whatever caused this tremendous shift in US society. How could this have gone on for so long afterwards without a civil war of sorts breaking out. Without having more information of the total collapse of society and a little more longevity of what lead to the collapse, it was hard to buy into this tale.If I could buy into the collapse of society and the development of Gilead to save the human race, there just wasn't enough information on how the Handmaids, the Aunts, etc were chosen, why they took healthy children away from their birth families and assigned the mothers of those children to other households for procreation...none of it made much sense. Also, what happened to the women in the colonies, the "unbabies", etc.There was a great core to this story, just not enough detail to support any of it so I was very disappointed in the end.

There was so much great hype about the television series that I was eager to read the book. Very interesting story. But I was greatly disappointed that the ending was full of holes. The main character had to guard her every thought, yet the ending reveals the story is being told based on her diary. Even if she'd had writing materials, which she didn't, she'd never have dared write down her thoughts and risk the results of exposure. Big let down.

I have to admit while parts of this novel where intriguing, most of it, I found difficult get through. The beginning until half way through was quite boring and if it hadn't been a required text for class I would've dropped it. On the other hand it was different and lacked the cliche main character that fights for freedom and justice, but then again that's the kind of character I like. I do recommend trying it for yourself as it wasn't a terrible read. I loved the ending though. It was open ended leaving you able to create an ending that you would like to have happened.

I checked out a number of shibori books at the local library. This is the only one I liked so much I decided to purchase it from Amazon! This book was by far the clearest in presenting a variety of simple techniques to get you started on exploring the art of shibori. The book also has a great 'natural history' of shibori and similar techniques cross-culturally and very clear illustrations of how to do the different techniques with both pictures of how to prepare the fabric as well as great photos of the actual 'product' you get after dyeing it. I'm a teacher and found this an EXCELLENT, simple and well-organized book if you want to learn about or begin to experiment with shibori techniques

A great book not only to get started, but a book that will give inspiration for a long time. This book gives practical tips on folding techniques that exceeds other books on Shibori. The tips on stitching and dyeing are also clearly shown. I would recommend this well organized book to anyone interested in these techniques. A great addition to have in your library.

Of the many surface design technique books out there, I found this one to be the most user-friendly, easy to follow, and with clear illustrations.Even though I didn't plunge into the world of fabric dying due to studio limitations, I spent many satisfying and meditative hours with needle and thread, mark-making on paper and fabrics to enlarge my collection of collage materials, inspired by the traditions and examples presented in this book.

This book is fabulous. Loved it so much that I bought a second copy for a friend. So many techniques. Beautiful illustrations.

This book has many good basic sections of information on how to make shibori fabrics easily at home. It is clear and concise, with good illustrations. Very importantly, the author discusses different dye types and methods, which is very important in shibori because, let's face it, we're not all going to go out into our backyards and indigo dye the old fashioned way. I've been doing shibori for years but I loved this book and found it full of good ideas.

The best endorsement would be pictgures of the clothing we have so far Shibori dyed with acid dye. It is not your older sister's or mother's tie dye.

This is Beautiful Book. I gives great instruction that even a beginner can follow and wonderful projects that provide great inspiration.

Save your money for better books. This is only a topical review of different techniques.

How can this book be sold? Errors and typos in a book that is supposed to help you build your math ability is counterproductive. How does this have 4 stars overall??

This book has a lot of good qualities - itâ€™s concise, and it does a tremendous amount of examples. HUGE COMPLAINT: there are literally hundreds of typos and other such errors throughout. There must have been very little proofreading done by a trained mathematician, otherwise this would have never gone to press. Unfortunately this is pretty typical of Schaumâ€™s, but this one is especially bad. My advice is to be very, very careful if you choose to purchase this reference.

Of the dozens of textbooks I've used over the years, this one has the most mistakes per page, by far. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of typos, in formulas, questions and solutions. If you don't have a working knowledge of the subject material, this book will leave you dazed and confused.In addition to the typos, the book is extremely terse in its explanations of the material. It is not a helpful guide and the problems are too riddled with mistakes to be helpful.

This book is the perfect example of how NOT to teach math. It actually makes me angry in a way, as it was the book I used for a class I needed to do well in, and instead of helping, it made things harder. Having experienced the concepts taught in a far superior way now, it feels downright irresponsible to write a textbook in such a lazy, unhelpful manner. Even concepts I came in understanding, like Mean Value Theorem - something at it's heart simple enough to teach to a child - are presented in a way that would be incredibly difficult for anyone new to the concept to understand. This is a textbook, and a quick-understanding one at that. Why write it that way?Also, as others have said, there are a ridiculous amount of errors in here. Almost on every page. I dunno what accomplishments the authors have in the field of pure math, but they should give up on teaching, they suck at it.

I purchased this item in order to review material that I had studied years ago in college. The topics are covered very well and deserve five stars. However, there are an unbelievable number of typographical errors on almost every page in this edition. This can only be due to very poor editing. These errors are very annoying to someone, like me, who is already familiar with the material. They must be very confusing to someone who is trying to learn this material for the first time.

If you wanna be masters in any specific course that is listed in Schaum's Outline just by these books. Containing a lots of numerical and solved problems make this series best.

A nice summary of all the important results of Calculus with good set of exercise. But there is simply too many typos. Cannot imagine a book with this many typos can be sold. If you write an errata for this book that will be another book. So this book is not suitable for first time learners. If you know the stuff already and have the tolerance for typos then this would be a good summary of all the important results.
