This is a book written by a brilliant mind that got stuck in the 1980â€™s. The author appears to be oblivious to whatâ€™s been going on in the realm of earth and nature based spiritualities since then. She presents ceremony that is largely comprised of pieces from Wicca, and other genres of Contemporary Paganism, and Native American Traditions slapped with - the very problematic in 2018 - label of â€œShamanism.â€ And itâ€™s presented as though itâ€™s all new material! Ingerman has some substantial work behind her but, sheâ€™s late to the table with this one and her publisher never should have let it go to print. And then ... OMG the cover!!!??? Who the heck let THAT slide by and what were they thinking??!! Never mind. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

I have read all her books and find this one takes you deeper giving you examples of how to do ceremony at any age level. It is so good to see this book in print. Her teachings now brought to practical experiences we can do ourselves.

This book changed my perspective on a lot of things. I am an anthropologist and I know the importance culture plays in the perspectives and actions of people. But when you get a glimpse of the 'why' by exploring aspects of their native culture, light bulbs begin to illuminate your perspectives. This book does this very thing, but with the person and culture of Jesus the Messiah! Amazing! I would recommend this book to anyone, Christian or non-Christian. It has powerful and profound insights to many stunning realities of Jesus' actions and the correlations to ancient and modern Jewish culture. Read this! You'll benefit from it, I promise!

The writers of this book present fascinating insights into Jewish culture and language of Jesus time, and even middle Eastern culture that persists to this day - all of which informs our reading of the New Testament. Reading and interpreting the Bible from and Western, Industrialized, Educated, Rich and Democratic mindset will always bring questions that cannot be answered, and interpretations that are not really what Jesus meant. I highly recommend this book, and other books by Lois Tverberg.

I learned so much reading this book and it's follow up Walking in the dust of Rabbi Jesus which I unknowingly read first. I highly recommend reading both! I'm currently on a journey learning the true Hebrew meaning behind the Scriptures and these two books will give you greater and more in depth understanding of Jewish life and customs. Now I wanna go back and read Jesus words with the more Hebrew understanding I have learned.

He wasn't just a Rabbi, he was 'The Rabbi'. As the living word of God, his teachings were not an interpretation of the Bible, they were the exact meaning of the Bible. At first, I was excited to receive this cookbook, another addition to my collection. As I began to read through, thinking of some new comfort food recipes to try, I was disappointed. The old-school comfort food as described by the author is completely different from the comfort food that many home cooks know of, such as southern fried chicken, or a variety of pot-pies as one reviewer mentioned. In addition, I don't find these recipes on a friendly budget, and several are time-consuming, which isn't a help in today's hectic world. Also, some of the recipes offered are not inviting for children, and the selection of recipes given are limited. I have a huge collection of cookbooks, some offering comfort foods that we are used of eating, on a friendly budget. However, this is not a favorite cookbook of mine for comfort food. It depends on what the cook is searching for, some may enjoy it, just not my idea of the comfort food I grew up on, or desire to satisfy hungry cravings.

This has a great prologue of Alex's life and childhood...I like her a lot from all her shows on the Food Network, and it was nice to read about what led her to her life in cooking. These recipes utilize foods that are from her past and bring her comfort, but I don't think I would be in the minority when I say they may be things that are not universally thought of as old school comfort foods. It is a beautiful book, and I look forward to trying out some of the recipes (although some are outside my comfort zone). There seems to be an inordinate number of seafood recipes, so if that is a plus for you, I would recommend this cookbook!

I purchased the Kindle Edition, but I want to review this one for the content, because the formatting on the Kindle leaves a little to be desired (especially as compared to the iBooks interactive edition, which I also,went ahead & bought).There are a couple of really excellent reviews here that outline the chapters and mention recipes, especially those from @thornhillatthemovies on 16 May, and Joanna Daneman on 13 April.But there are a couple of issues I'd like to address from my personal perspective.Comfort Food: the tag on the title IS "The Way I Learned to Cook" - these are HER comfort foods. And oddly enough, many of them that have been denigrated in some of the reviews are mine as well. Yes, I love both Duck Hearts and Sea Bass in Papillotte (or almost any fish, for that matter). I served the Pickled Grapes in Prosciutto last weekend, and everyone in the group wanted more, and all asked how I made them so they could add them to their repertoires. This will be one of the things I'm "known for" - so I'd have to call it a comfort food. And it's easier to make than one can even imagine!Ingredients: several people commented on "expensive" and "rare " or "hard to find" ingredients. I'm far from wealthy, but my budget prioritizes food costs as #1 because I love to cook and entertain - so I, personally, am willing to spend for high quality steaks, fish, seafoods, organics, and things like caviar and foie gras (please don't go astray from the cookbook itself by talking about the political issues surrounding foie gras). I source many things online.My point, and I do have one, is that I think the review guidelines are to lead us to review the contents of the book as a whole as to whether it accomplishes the purpose it set out to accomplish; and some people not only complain about, but downgrade the book, for things that don't really make it a bad book.Recommended for people who take the time to read the descriptions and reviews and make an informed decision that this might be a book they'd enjoy reading and cooking from. It's Possibly not for people who just buy it for Comfort Food, depending on their view of what constitutes Comfort Food. For me, personally, this book IS Comfort Food!

I am a huge fan of AG and have eaten at Butter many times. I am lucky enough to live a few blocks away. I got this book intrigued the title and the now ubiquitous concept of comfort food done well borderline upscale. This book did not disappoint. Off the bat, I made the arugula salad with strawberries and poppy seeds (the dressing was wonderful) and the cold asparagus salad with sesame seeds (huge hit). I am looking forward to trying many more recipes as our last Thanksgiving was filled with AG's dishes I made based on her TV show. Thanks for a great book, Alex!

Chef Alex Guarnaschelli brings a tremendous amount of experience and multicultural versatility with her first cookbook. The recipes are thoroughly-explained and doable in your home kitchen. Most of all, Alex is a fantastic writer, sharing delightful stories from her childhood in Manhattan to her culinary training in some of the most respected restaurants in the US and France. Photos, drawings, and hand-written notes are a charming touch that sets Old-School Comfort Food apart from the rest. I'm not much of a cookbook collector...I might have a dozen, and they are carefully chosen. I am proud to own this book.

Alex has been a favorite of mine for some time. Her book met all my expectations. The recipes are easy to follow, wonderfully tasty and the ingredients are easy to find. I love her recipes because they are delicious without being too "grand", just luscious but great for regular people. I like that she makes it easy to follow her instructions. I think that this is a terrific book for all cooks, and would be a good gift to new cooks. My grandson is about to be married and likes to cook so this will be one of my gifts to him. It covers all types of meals and tells wonderful stories all through the book that are truly human and interesting. I am so happy that she became an Iron Chef. She really deserves this recognition.

Reading this cookbook is like listening to Chef Guarnaschelli speak. She describes flavors and events with such detail I feel like I'm there.I am halfway through the book and have already marked about 10 recipes to try. Most are simple enough that the average home chef can create them without any trouble. Her suggestions for alternate ingredients is helpful in some instances. Her reliance on fresh produce is a wonderful step in the right direction.Cannot wait to finish the book and get cooking.

Just okay. I was expecting it to be more like the original Pout Pout Fish with very clever rhymes. There are about 5 words per page and a total of 12 pages. Not impressed.

The original Pout-Pout fish is a favorite, but this one is very disappointing with a boring storyline. It is MUCH shorter than the original, and the rhymes are not clever or well-thought-out.

like many of the other books each page contains a single sentence and there are 5 page turns. pout-pout is my 2.5 yr-old granddaughter's favorite book, so i have no doubt-doubt she will enjoy this as well and once she begins reading, the length will give her a sense of accomplishment.

Disappointed. We like Pout Pout Fish and this felt like a cheap attempt to make some extra money. Very short, story isn't interesting, not worth it.

I purchase these books as soon as they are available. My grandson loves them. My only complaint would be the long wait between publications.

This is a short book that doesn't rhyme like the original and doesn't really mention Pout pout fish but maybe one time although he's on each page. I'll rate it 3 stars just because it's cute and my son loves the original pout pout fish. It's about the same cost as the original and I feel it should be priced less but it's cute nonetheless.

Using meditation, these practitioners believe the sexual union is a metaphor of uniting a man and woman into becoming one with a god. Through a close study of the original texts, Taunton shows that Tantra, far from being antinomian and anti-Traditional, is actually firmly rooted in the very oldest strata of the Vedas; indeed, a chapter devoted to study of the Hindu doctrine of cyclical time shows that the Tradition itself implies that the last Age, our own Kali Yuga, must develop its own methods of working with, rather than against, darkness, inertia and materialism, precisely in order to preserve Order (dharma) and keep the path to liberation open.For example, Tantra does not invalidate the caste system, but recognizes the mixing of castes and proposes its own, fifth caste which combines the others; in this way Tradition is honored while decadence is acknowledged and contained (rather than promoted or celebrated, as the Westerner does in his obsession with being â€œtransgressiveâ€). Taunton demonstrates throughout that Tantraâ€™s transgressions are all committed from within Tradition and to preserve sacred Order.The chapter on cyclical time alone is worth the price of admission; especially as it also includes a discussion of how the Traditionalists (DaniÃ©lou, Evola and GuÃ©non) have made it central to their own doctrines and thereby injected it into the wider Western consciousness. The most influential of these is Evola, and Taunton closely studies his adaptation of Tantra for the West, which authentic yet idiosyncratic. Taunton also puts Evolaâ€™s relations with Fascism in perspective; like Tantra itself, Evola was simply using the available material to construct a bulwark for Order and Tradition in the degenerating modern world.Other chapters deal with the various gods and goddesses associated with Tantra, showing how their multitudinous and contradictory forms are the sign of their reconciliation of mundane opposites into a higher unity.Taunton also explicates lesser known aspects of Tantra, such as the role of sacred places (â€œTopographical Religiosityâ€), and the very important and well-developed Hindu doctrines of sight and sound (â€œLexicographical Gnoseologyâ€), ritual elements which the West has paid scant attention to in its own traditions. In all cases, Taunton resolves their apparently wild and outrÃ© Tantric manifestations into well-grounded, conservatively intended extensions (the meaning of the word Tantra) of the Vedic traditions.The typically impatient Western reader who perseveres to the end will be rewarded with a chapter on Tantric spells and rituals for gaining power in the world of the Kali Yuga, complete with Appendices of mantras and alchemical correspondences; the material may be startling but again, the discussion is sober and non-sensationalistic, with no more emphasis than given by the Tantric texts and traditions themselves.I respectfully disagree with the earlier reviewer: rather than being â€œnot for non-specialists,â€ this book is just what they need!

A woman who wears her hair unbound is a sign that she is menstruating.The holy city of Kasi is not just a place of pilgrimage. The God Siva is said to be always present there. It is said that merely to die in Kasi is enough to release a person from Hinduism's cycle of death and rebirth.This book is not Hinduism For Beginners. This is a fine, small (key word being small) reference booklet. I wouldn't rely on it solely by any means, but it would definitely be easy to carry in a pocket. I've included a photo comparing it to Rick Steves' Italian phrase book so you'll know exactly how tiny it is. The price difference was only $3--I personally would rather pay that much more for a more comprehensive phrase book than pay $6 for what's little more than a pamphlet.

This book will not have you fluent in Italian, but it is just what is needed to communicate in hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and taxis. Small enough to carry with you without being a burden.

Great little pocket guide. I moved to Italy and didn't leave home without this for the first few months. Very easy to read, like the italicized pronounciation. All the conversation essentials.
