About the Author
Les Rowntree is a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he researches and writes about environmental issues. This career change comes after three decades of teaching both Geography and Environmental Studies at San Jose State University in California. As an environmental geographer, Dr. Rowntree’s interests focus on international environmental issues, biodiversity conservation, and human-caused global change. Martin Lewis is a Senior Lecturer in History at Stanford University. He has conducted extensive research on environmental geography in the Philippines and on the intellectual history of global geography. Her studies have explored human migration, natural resource use, environmental conservation, and regional development. Dr. Price brings to Globalization and Diversity a special interest in regions as dynamic spatial constructs that are shaped over time through both global and local forces. Her publications include the co-edited book, Migrants to the Metropolis: The Rise of Immigrant Gateway Cities (2008, Syracuse University Press) and numerous academic articles and book chapters. Bill Wyckoff is a geographer in the Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University specializing in the cultural and historical geography of North America. He has written and co-edited several books on North American settlement geography, including The Developer’s Frontier: The Making of the Western New York Landscape (1988), The Mountainous West: Explorations in Historical Geography (1995) (with Lary M. I bought the book for my Regional Geography class at City College of San Francisco. It covers all regions of the world, some more extensively than others. It offers great pictures and information. However, the authors need to fix their typos and minor errors, so I take off 1 star. They need more editing, proofreading or to hire someone to do such. After all, it is not the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition.

I heartily recommend this book, and college course, for a serious student of our world.As part of my current education plan of working towards my second bachelor degree, Geography is required, and glad it worked out this way. Although I am an experienced man of the world, I have not had a formal geography class since grade school, indeed, not even when in college the first time. Taking this course not only covers the location and topography of all the continents, oceans, nations, states , cities, but also other frameworks, namely:Environmental geography.Population & settlement, people on the land, population growth & change, demographic transitions, migration patterns.Cultural coherence & diversity: the geography of tradition & change, culture in a globalizing world, when cultures collide.Geopolitical framework: fragmentation, unity, nation states, colonialismEconomic & social development: geography of wealth & poverty, more- and less-developed countries, indicators of economic and social development.
Needed the access code for Mastering Geography that the title said it would come with and it didn't. So guess what I have to do? Ship it back and get a different one somewhere else.
This is a decent geography textbook. It has two chapters that introduce basic geographical tools and concepts. The next 12 chapters give overviews of world regions. The regional overviews cover physical geography, environmental issues, culture, politics, and history, among other things.
As an older woman returning to college, I picked Geography as on of my classes for the semester imagining in my mind specifics about what we were going to learn in class. I was wrong. It was so much more. I am sad that I have to return this book because the class was amazing. The class and this book made me feel as if I visited parts of the world I didn't know existed.It was very in-depth and surprisingly very up to date. This book contains all important historical information that has happened even after and 9-11. For each continent it talked about world globalization, environment, regions, temperatures, climate change, politics, conflicts, farming, trades, money, culture, language, migrations, land area, seas, lakes, mountains, drug trades, "The Red Market", everything! Also, it is very clearly written, very easy to understand with beautiful picture illustrations that include maps and sub heads to describe what is happening in a scene. Tables that show rates of population increase, who's increasing their population and how many cultures are not. GIS maps that give you a true look at what's going on with detailed explanation. This book is very well done.Although I found the chapters were very long and it would take more than a day or evening to get through one, they all had links to videos to watch which I found to be faster and extremely interesting and helpful in learning about certain areas of the world when time wasn't on my side, and those going to college know exactly what I mean.Anyone thinking about taking this class, especially those taking journalism and or photography who may be interested in making documentaries or those who like to travel or those just interested in the world should take this class and have the professor use this book! I am a photography major and love to travel and this class inspired me and fueled my desire even more to get out there and explore the world. I was sad to see the class end last night. This book made me feel as if I took off on a world tour adventure and now its over. Out of all my travels this was the best trip I have ever been on.Thank you for the rental of this book. I hope someone else gets as much out of it as I did.
Loose leaf may seem like a ridiculous textbook option however, this is the only way to go! Instead of having to carry the entire textbook to class, I just take out the chapter we are covering that week and put it in a smaller binder. Then, I leave the rest of the text at home which means a much lighter backpack! This option does come with a valid MasteringGeography access code and arrived to Hawaii when it was expected, without any issues.

I loved the finish of this book, however I do wish it was a bit sturdier. It's quite floppy. I wasn't sure what size to expect, but I do wish it was a bit bigger. It came a little late so I hurried to add it to the gift package I was giving so I didn't measure it, but I'd say it was about 7-8 inches tall and maybe 4 inches wide, half inch thick. Not something you would display because of the flimsiness. Pages were cute and functional, I do wish the paper was a bit less thin though. I personally think the price is a bit high as I've seen comparable blank cookbooks at the dollar store, or for around $4.
My mom has several cookbooks, many of which are handwritten. But she recently expressed an interest in getting a new cookbook to write down all of her FAVORITE recipes, for me to treasure someday. So, with that in mind, I bought her this one, and she's overjoyed. It's so cute, and the cover is the kind of paper that feels like a cross between satin and suede, so it's high-quality.
This is exactly what I needed! I no longer have to remember web pages I got recipes from and what tweaks I made or ask someone 1000x how to make something. I’ve started my own written recipe book! It makes me happy that I’ll have this for years with all my favorite recipes. I write them down as I cook and add notes for next time when I’m done!

Love this book! Very well organized. Have not seen another come close to the quality of photos provided or the info written for each of the 59 parks. It's going to help me decide which parks I really want to see in retirement, as well as to educate me about parks I never knew existed. It could be outdated soon though as it does provide names of places to stay and eat which certainly change. But for now it's certainly exactly what I have been searching for.
If you're looking for one book that is not only informative regarding our National Parks, but beautiful to look at....this is it. Wonderfully written with great information regarding the parks and packed with outstanding photography. Great for planning a trip, or, if you can't go, this is a wonderful option to visit the parks vicariously! Beautiful book.

Christmas present along with Your Guide to the National Parks for my 2 sons. This one is a hardcover. Came sealed in plastic but I am very curious! Now these pictures are breathtaking! There's itineraries and hikes, wildlife to spot, where to stay. The map of all the parks on the contents page is a reminder that living here on the east coast means we (they lol) have to start planning soon to hit all 59! Great coffee table book and the kids can learn a lot. I know my family will enjoy reading this book as well as making vacation choices from here.

So many times boundaries were crossed from my inlaws and continue to but I have not known what to do in hope to prevent permanently damaging my relationship with them and theirs with their son (my husband) I bought this book! My inlaws marriage and the disfunction of their family is totally different then mine and there's a cultural difference as well not much but enough to see the difference... they have manipulated my husband and much criticized everything being my fault, we are treated like our family isn't worthy enough to invite over, they complain we live too far for them even see their own grandchildren 25-30min, sometimes my father in law has seen he children alone, my brother in laws look at me and my husband uncomfortably and it's just plain weird and disrespectful, considering no one else treats us with such a negative snobby like attitude, really it's because my husbands step mother is overly critical even states she's happy she never had a girl thank god and causes arguments with my father in law if he doesn't side with her about her viewpoint of me and she cries on command which I don't so then I feel like I've suddenly lost the battle if I even try to defend myself! Every relationship and relationships/scenarios with our inlaws are all different, but this book sure brings some comfort in knowing that you can gain that part of your life back without losing your marriage even if your spouse just doesn't get it. My husband is a good man but he has many times tried to just get me to accept continuously be hurt emotionally from them that I can't even eat in peace when I'm around them bc I feel like I'm being watched like a hawk for any little thing. I'm not much of a book worm but I am finding this book has so much in common with my life that I can't wait to finish it I hope it helps me be able to defend myself as a mother without sacrificing my dignity and self respect, giving me good advise to have a backbone and finally draw some boundaries to stop the emotional damage it's doing to me and my marriage.
3 years into a marriage with a man I loved more than anything and I couldn't understand how his family was still such a point of contention. This book addresses the personality types of deceitful and manipulative people, so rather than you as a spouse pointing a finger, your spouse is able to read from a third party what personality traits are healthy and which are toxic. The title is a little harsh, but the lessons on how to address these characters in the family TOGETHER was by far the most important part. As the book says, in law problems are marriage problems. I so so so highly recommend this book if you feel like you can't win, like you hold your tongue around your spouse's family, or if you are so tired of your spouse not understanding how difficult the people in his/her family are to you. Read this book together!! It's a game changer.
Great book. I only wish I had read it 15 years ago as it seemed like the author was writing about my in laws and the absolutely devastating affect they had on our lives. Although, ironically, I'm not sure I would have appreciated it as much had we not so tragically suffered as a result of their toxicity. Family of origin issues can make a person, especially a child, vulnerable to the world's evil, regardless of their age, and "Toxic-In-Laws" are perhaps the single biggest cause of this vulnerability because they were "toxic parents" long before they became toxic-in-laws. If you even suspect this to be the case in your marriage use this book as guide to fix it immediately because, trust me, left challenged, they can have devastating consequences.
Excellent and helpful book. I'm a grandmother so I bought it to avoid being the toxic in-law. Good advice on dealing with difficult family members without starting a World War. Also good way to analyze your own response and whether it is helping or hurtung.Has the added benefit of being short and to the point.
Susan Forward's books are always well written and this one is no exception. You'll recognize some of your in-laws if there's dysfunction in the family you married into and be offered ways to disengage effectively so their impact on your life is minimized.
This book has been helping my marriage it's absolutely a lifesaver. My husband now is starting to see how toxic his parents are thank God. It's a must buy .
Really good book. Will not help you fix your relationship but definitely explain and help you deal with the situation. It's more a "how to survive" than "how to fix" type of book.

UbD is a great instructional concept, but it tries to be too much and fails to deliver meaningful quality content for both new and experienced teachers. It almost seems as if Wiggins tries to reinvent what teachers should do but takes two steps back and says "use what fits your needs." The books were supposedly created to be read in any order, but each chapter references other chapters and reuses graphics. Sometimes it appears as if Wiggins is trying to reinvent what was already made: Bloom's Taxonomy and verbs, different forms of formative assessment, and teaching practices that I am already aware of before I read the book. In fact, it was difficult to understand what exactly is UbD until about chapter 5, which could have easily been stated much earlier than saying "it's complicated" and not providing a clear blueprint. The first few chapters seem more like an attempt to sell a concept like a TV commercial.Much of the work consists of visual grids, forms, and graphs that sometimes make the concepts more confusing than helpful. The process of constructing lesson plans is further complicated by using abbreviations that serve little purpose other than to the lesson writer himself. In other words, unless your colleagues also understand your specific design, a UbD lesson plan would not be understood by even a well-trained educator. It attempts to create vague templates with so much room that nothing seems concrete, such as evaluative criteria, objectives, and daily lessons. Don't believe me? Just read the template about a driving lesson, there is no scoring guide next to its "criteria" to show level of performance. GRASPS is nearly the same. Even with the Forms/FAQ, I left more confused than enlighted about some "revolutionary" design concept.Furthermore, there is a danger in overusing the "understanding" method of teaching, especially in lower grades (K-5). There is so much emphasis on higher-level thinking that it suggests taking away assessment of other knowledge in order to obtain "a mile deep and an inch wide" level of understanding. The author wants students to make meaning of their learning in a complex way rather than just recall the material. While I agree that students should learn in a meaningful way, the level of depth can be inappropriate for lower grades in given subjects as suggested, such as math.Summary:UbD can be best described as a way for teachers to organize what they already know how to do while adding a level of complexity to the process. Emphasis on content the teacher already knows. This includes unnecessary labels (AMT, WHERETO, GRASPS, Facets), renaming lesson planning norms (rubrics, big ideas, essential questions, unpacking standards, differentiated instruction), and generic classroom instructional strategies (see table of content in "Classroom instruction that Works"). I bought this for a college class and felt that I got nothing out of this series, not even as a new teacher. While I acknowledge that there are some reviewers who feel that this book has been life-changing, I prefer concrete and specific plans to help me reflect on my practices a year later. UbD is merely a "thinking process" to help one focus on what they intend for their students to learn. It is best suited for upper grades and must heavily be modified to work with elementary students. I may use UbD as a curriculum map, but certainly not for teaching lessons.
This is a useful text for planning lessons or units that follows up the UbD text written by the same authors. It is not a book about philosophy or learning theories. It's only about what principles and questions teachers should take into account when planning. There is no rigid following of a template or guidelines. What are the principles espoused by W & M? That lesson planning should be geared toward "understanding" rather than rote memory, and that it should begin with desired results, then move to assessment techniques, and finally, to the activities. This process is called "backward design." If students "understand," then they may be able to transfer the acquired knowledge to solve problems and make decisions, making learning more meaningful. The authors also discuss the four learning goals - transfer, meaning, knowledge, and skills - and the three stages of learning - acquisition, meaning-making, and transfer. These latter three did not appear on the original UbD.Although the authors discuss many of the ideas covered in the early UbD text, the templates, the dialogues, and the guiding questions make this text an excellent complement to that first text. This is not to mention that this is adaptable to the recently established Common Core Standards. The dialogues were a great way of showing significant differences between mere coverage of content, and meaningful learning. This latter concept is achieved by asking Why am I teaching this to my students? What do I expect students to do with the skill or content?This book is not anti-standards or anti-standardized exams. It is not a critique against any particular public policy although the authors have criticized the excessive number of standards, and policies that encourage teaching by the test (they did so in UbD).On the contrary, this book helps teachers enhance their lesson planning and meet goals established by standards and educational policies in a more effective way, without sacrificing learners' academic development.This is one of the most useful books on lesson planning that I've read so far. It's also an eye-opener as to what education should be about. It avoids getting into fruitless debates about what os the True philosophy or scientific theory about learning. Very practical. I recommend it to any teacher who wants to improve lesson planning in the classroom.
I think the ideas are valid, but it seems the authors are overcomplicating the content and concepts. Everything that needs to be said could be done in half as many pages. It's ridiculously redundant.
Definitely a must have for any educator. Wiggins and McTighe are almost the pioneers in this field and thought of backwards design (Robert Tyler first thought of the concept in his published work from 1947) and their concepts are easy to implement and are what I would call a no-brainer. As in it should be something that all teachers are already implementing in their lesson and unit planning already. However, we all know that it is not already in the forefront of every educators mind or else there would not be a need for this book. This book will definitely teach the educator or potential educator how to start to think about the goals of a lesson and then to plan the lessons on how to get each student to those specific goals (backwards design). It is an easy concept and once understood and fully grasped by the educator he/she can start to educate their students in a way in which the students will benefit by truly gaining meaningful knowledge from the course they are taking with the educator and be able to apply the knowledge and demonstrate understanding.
I had to read this book for a graduate course, and it is, quite possibly, one of the most enlightening education texts I have ever read. I bought the kindle version for the course, but I'm planning on buying the print edition so that I can re-read it, with more notes. It's that good. I wish I had read it years ago, and I have found it's impacted my teaching from chapter one. I'm encouraging my principal to offer it as a book study.
