About the Author

Former federal prosecutor under nine US attorneys from both political parties over ten years and three districts, Sidney Powell was lead counsel in 350 criminal appeals for the United States and more than 150 since in private practice. It was from her experience in several of her cases that she felt compelled to write LICENSED TO LIE: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice after seeing a core group of federal prosecutors break all the rules, make up crimes, hide evidence, and send innocent people to prison. The book reads like a legal thriller, but it names the prosecutors who then rose to positions of great power and the judges who turned a blind eye to their abuses of unfettered power.  Sidneyis highly sought to comment on current legal issues and government investigations—especially the special investigation lead by Robert Mueller and his chief lieutenant Andrew Weissmann, who is a true villain in LICENSED TO LIE. For more information, her media appearances, articles and law practice, see www.SidneyPowell.com

Since I am not an attorney I was wary that this book would be dry and incomprehensibly drenched in legalese. It was not. In fact it was so beautifully written that every page just sang while still covering the very intense moments played out throughout the book so that every circumstance was easily understandable. Beautifully written, it covered a subject matter that contained little beauty at all. It is a damning indictment of what is supposed to be the epitome of our country's 'justice' system, our corrupt and corrupting Department of Justice as well as a few courtrooms in this country, to boot. Reading this book made me so angry and beyond the anger a feeling of despair that the faith that we should have in our justice system cannot be justified. So many lives ruined because a few (or many) justice department lawyers apparently valued their own upward career mobility over the very reason for their existence in their positions...JUSTICE. To lie, to cheat, to win at all costs (not their's) is the game. To treat defendants as numbers instead of human beings who deserve the presumption of innocence and the right to a speedy defense (that doesn't take years from someone's life) seems the rule. To spend millions of taxpayer dollars to drag out lengthy trials over many years is just an advantage to be taken while the lies continue and the defendant's bank accounts are emptied. The 'liberty and justice for all' that we believe is available to us is just an empty promise today. This is a wonderfully informative book but oh, so, sad. Ms. Powell is owed a debt of gratitude from the citizens of this country for exposing the wrongs she witnessed.

I am not a lawyer, and as my lawyer friend and once fellow Amazon reviewer would quip: “and maybe that is a good thing.” A few years back he recommended an excellent book to me on how the back of legal racial segregation was broken, primarily by four men, all justices on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The book is Jack Bass’ Unlikely Heroes, and my review of it is posted on Amazon. About a fourth of the way through “Licensed to Lie,” if I needed further confirmation that I was in good hands, Sidney Powell said of Bass’ book: “One of my most prized possessions is a copy autographed by most of the judges mentioned in it.”Sidney Powell worked for 10 years as an Assistant US Attorney in the Justice Department. She was the youngest person ever appointed to such a position. At one level, she was a “true believer,” thinking that the department that she once worked for should reflect its name. This is a deeply disillusioned account of utter corruption within her former employer. The subtitle though is somewhat misleading, since her disillusionment extends far beyond her former employer – it encompasses many Federal judges. As Powell says: “God, I thought, what I would have given for Judge Sullivan to have had this case – or any judge with common sense, fortitude, and a moral compass for which true North was fundamental fairness.” Or, as I might say, to find just one judge who would not buy an excuse from a Justice Department lawyer that is the equivalent of: “But your honor, my pet rock ate my homework.”Powell’s account covers two major legal actions. The first was the corruption case against Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska. He was convicted, and would lose his bid for re-election, and he had been the longest serving Republican Senator. His conviction was eventually overturned, for gross prosecutorial misconduct. It was in this case that the above-named Judge Sullivan ordered an investigation of the prosecutors – which is so rarely done – for failure to provide the “Brady” evidence (which was a new concept to me), essentially withholding key evidence that would have exonerated Senator Stevens. The major legal action involved the fallout of the collapse of Enron due to massive financial fraud. Sidney Powell had a client in this case – an executive, Jim Brown, with a major Wall Street brokerage company, and she details the multi-year legal actions involved.Powell has written a “page-turner.” A difficult feat, given the often-dull machinations in the legal field. As in Bass’ book, there really is much high-drama, including an event she brings out early in the book, the suicide of Federal prosecutor Nicholas Marsh, who played a lead role in the Stevens prosecution. Powell also achieved a feat worth noting, an important one in writing a book: she changed my mind. Weren’t they all “guilty”? As Powell notes in the account, given the devastating impact Enron’s collapse had on Houston, it was difficult to find an impartial jury, and I’ll admit I would have been in that crowd. Hadn’t Brown’s brokerage firm stolen money from me… and in a separate case, my brother? Not, mind you, “mismanaged.” Actually, flat-out, stolen. (Note: in the interest of full disclosure, in both cases, the money was returned, but only after a substantial battle). And then there are the “banks too big to fail” that are invariably concocting some additional and unauthorized fee to charge you. “Lock ‘em all up.” And Powell convinced me that there really was much injustice in all this, and such an attitude that I had… perhaps the worst part is that the real crooks always seem to get away.Powell names names: Andrew Weissmann and Kathryn Ruemmler, (who was at one time “short-listed” to be the Attorney General) along with Friedrich, at (in)Justice. Judge Werlein, and much of the Fifth Circuit, which Powell once held in high regard. Her client, Jim Brown, would do prison time. In fact, his legal case, and the various remands, obfuscations, and evasions of judicial responsibility along with the vendetta waged by the (in)Justice Department would span more time that the six years that Andy Fastow, the ultimate crook in this case, spent in prison.A botched investigations, and a botched prosecution, and an essential governmental agency whose “players,” (and that, sadly, is an apt description) lack that “moral compass” where the only rules seem to be those of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. This book would have been an ideal candidate for my special “6-star” rating, but I felt that Powell overlooked some of the larger issues of corruption, particularly in the financial sector, and our society’s utter failure to hold anyone accountable – like for the three trillion the Fed paid to bail out Wall Street when the various frauds in the housing sector collapsed in 2008. How many Enron employees lost their life savings, with the collapse of the stock that was stuffed in their 401k’s? And how many Enron “big boys” were able to bail out in time? But don’t get me started…Oh, and there are the additional ironies that would be thrown out of an outlandish Hollywood movie as being unbelievable. (Former) Chief Justice Alex Kozinski of the 9th Circuit wrote the introduction to this work, saying, inter alia, “...professional discipline is non-existent.” Kozinski has recently been forced to resign over multiple allegations of sexual harassment. Now people are looking at his own decisions, for example, in “Swenson v. Potter,” which reversed a jury decision in a sexual harassment case, and thereby Kozinski found for the government agency, and its own misconduct.Ancient history? Hardly. DOJ attorneys continue to lie to Federal judges, and those judges continue to accept their blatant “pet rock ate my homework” lies. I should know. 5-stars for Powell’s important account.

Do not delay selecting the book Licensed to Lie and reading Sidney Powell's case for her client Mr. Brown who she worked with for nearly a decade in the appeals process after the Enron prosecutors pushed indictments and selected the information and even witnesses that would be available to the defense teams. The case overlaps with other Enron cases and the Senator Ted Stevens case that were mostly reversed in the appeals process because the prosecution teams included several of the same prosecutors or were supervised by lead prosecutors. Sidney Powell names the prosecutors and associates in the case as well as the judges throughout the process. People went to prison on convictions for things that were not crimes. Witnesses in the case were threatened with indictment. Then there is the death of the senator and the suicide of a prosecutor. The book is a page turner and considering that the same people from the FBI, DOJ, and special investigation team of Robert Mueller are back in the news everyone should read this book now. Be sure to check out Sidney Powell's web site where a number of supporting documents and articles are posted. Excellent resource!

As a federal criminal defense attorney for nearly 20 years, this book resounded LOUDLY with me. The acts of the U.S. Attorney that she describes are endemic. I have been lied to, threatened with bar complaints and had complaints made to judges behind my back, all for trying to provide a zealous defense to my client. Everything Sidney Powell says here is true. Not only is it true, but it's a page turner, including back stories of people whose lives were ruined by aggressive prosecutors. If you are interested in justice and the corruption of the process designed to provide it, READ THIS BOOK.

As a trauma therapist, I want to say that Resmaa's book is very well organized with clear descriptions of the most current understanding of trauma physiology and healing. There is a lot of preparation for the reader to help support us in our journey through difficult material, including how to manage difficult thoughts, emotions and sensations as they arise. There are a lot of wonderful exercises that people can use to learn how to work with racialized trauma in every chapter. As a white-bodied person, it has changed the way I relate with stories of racial violence. The idea is to metabolize our historical trauma so that we can make room for something new. For example, when I hear about another black-bodied young man being shot, I take a moment and feel the feelings that come up, rather then pushing them away or feeling helpless to change anything. I allow myself to feel the hurt and shame that my ancestors perpetrated atrocities on black-bodies that were perpetrated against them in historical times in Europe. If I can process these feelings, I might be less likely to recreate them in the present and future. Healing is an incremental process and an ongoing one.

Resmaa Menakem's book is a timely, easy to access manual for healing at the crossroads of somatic psychology/trauma skills & racism in the United States (and beyond). Menakem writes with kindness and clarity from decades of lived experience and pragmatic healer consciousness. His extension of DeGruy's work on 'Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome' to include the older roots of European trauma appropriately calls white Americans to task in the cultural healing of our times. Menakem does this without shaming or rigidity and without pulling any punches. It's (past) time to sink into this working of healing the legacies of racism that live in our bodies. Highly recommended for therapists, activists, military and law enforcement, and anyone ready to courageous embrace the clean pain and relational healing called for in cultural healing.

Before reading this extraordinary book, I was persuaded that African Americans live in a trauma basin framed by historical impacts of slavery and contemporary assaults of injustice and deprivation. I wanted to launch a meaningful community-based response and engaged some highly esteemed Black Psychologists who brought great insights and hearts of commitment to the task. After reading this work our efforts were enhanced in a powerful way. I want to buy out the national stock and distribute to every citizen of our land. This is a well written compelling treatment of trauma as it exists in bodies of every description across our land. My reflection on the concepts Menakem introduces of clean and dirty pain resulted in a breakthrough in a key relationship headed for the rocks.Get it. Read it. Pass it on!

Menakem shares deeply personal stories woven effortlessly with threads of modern neuroscience and ancestral wisdom to illuminate a clear path to racial healing in America. His language around “white body supremacy” brings racism out of our heads and into our bodies so that we can FEEL that, despite our noblest intellectual intentions, our bodies remember and continue to act out learning from past generations that reproduce racism in our relationships today. Fortunately, our bodies are also the places we experience repair and reconnection. Menakem’s new language and body-based healing practices are an essential foundation for what I hope will grow into powerful antidotes to white body supremacy: white body humility and white racial repair. I am grateful for Menakem’s language and tools as I work to bring about healing in my white body and our collective white cultural body. I am also grateful for guides like Menakem who call me to hold myself accountable for damage I continue to cause, with a presence so loving I can bear the pain of their honesty and keep working to do better. If you’re looking for that kind of guide, you’ve found one in Menakem.

My Grandmother's Hands is a new step towards healing racialized trauma by opening up our consciousness to our most vulnerable foundation, our bodies. As a white person who means well, it's not enough for words to heal but to feel and own how trauma affects all of us and provides a critical opening on how we can begin to heal and solve the core inequities present in everyday America and across the world. A bold and emotional journey, this book is a view of what civilization can aspire to and realistically achieve.

The never ending excitement and dramatics certainly makes this story five star worthy. The author does an excellent job of his character selection and he is definitely very thorough in his descriptive researching. I am impressed with the camaraderie of the good guys and there is just enough slip of the tongue to motivate my undivided attention. The storylines always perfectly descriptive of what to expect next, but still not reveal the true meaning of what the author's apparent intent is. I am definitely impressed with the author's omnipresent situations and every episode is definitely an excellent example of his outstanding knowledge he so vividly describes. Everyone do yourselves a favor by reading this heartwarming and adventurous series of spectacular travels through the author's apparent intent to satisfy your every whim! I, for one, am definitely impressed with each and every new adventurous episode that Ellie empowers to happen. You will be the loser if you don't!

Wow!! What an ending. Certainly glad I got the first three books all at one time. Now on to the third nail biting adventure. I want all the readers to know I hate housework but will buckle down and force myself to do—eventually. Thankfully I have no one fussing at me about my dusty house. But since picking up the first book in this series I have not even thought about housework. Dust is getting pretty deep! Love Wayne Stinnett and Dawn Lee McKenna and several others. Now I have to add Jack Hardin to my hard core list of authors. No words to describe the characters in this book—well thought out with wild and varying personalities!! Perfect example of the people who live on the Florida coast. Wonderful laid back people. This book was a delight to read and can’t wait to dig into the next one. I will keep reading as long as Jack Hardin keeps writing!!

Shallow Breeze did not disappoint. Man, what an ending!!!!! It makes you go back and re-think everything else you just read. I’m eagerly reading book 3 now. Yes, there's another cliffhanger, but there's better closure to some of the individual battles towards Ellie's ultimate goal in this book than in the first. More great character development (Gotta love Gloria and Fu!), intriguing detail, and very clever, satisfying word pictures, with just the occasional cliché metaphor thrown in. The Ringo character is so complex. I'm dying to know what the author does with him. As a writer and editor myself, I’m impressed that this is only Jack Hardin’s second book. Wish I could write and tell tales like this! I’ll definitely be on the lookout for his future titles.

A fast paced book, gets down to it right off the bat. Book two of a four part series, anintriguing tale of an ex-CIA employee who resigns and moves home to Pine islandFlorida. Subsequently recruited by the DEA, she investigates an almostinvisible drug smuggling operation, that very well could be a glimpse into what is reallygoing on today along Florida's gulf coast. Timely and interesting, this book is agood ride with a fantastic ending! Mr. Hardin is reminiscent of Randy White or Wayne Stinnett with a bit of Carl Hiaasenand Bob Morris thrown in. Keep em' coming Jack.

I love these books! The characters are easy to become emotionally invested in, even the bad guys. These books are fast and entertaining. Can’t wait for book three!

Love Ellie and everything about her character. The end of every book in this series ends with a blindside.

Can’t wait to get time alone so I can read this series of books. Simply put, I can’t put it down. Love the characters, the plot and the suspenseful endings!

My first Hardin read...I'll be back for more.

it's ok

I guess one of my kids bought this book by accident. It was just a few bucks, and I played the game once on my kid's tablet, so I read the book, after tightening security to prevent future purchases. It includes the phrase, "hold the mouse button as fast as possible." How is that possible? I can repeatedly click the mouse fast, but how do you repeatedly hold? Also, my tablet doesn't have a mouse. This book needs a better introduction regarding which devices it is covering, and what is out of scope.

I have a book like this but this is better!!

Everything Flows (New York Review Books Classics), by Vasily Grossman Robert Chandler

From Publishers Weekly

Few novels confront human suffering on as massive a scale as this one. After his release into post-Stalinist Russia, Ivan Grigoryevich finds that the 30 years he spent in Stalin's forced labor camps have wreaked terrible changes in himself and in Soviet society. He goes first to his cousin's Moscow apartment, but he and his wife are preoccupied with petty successes secured by cooperation with a state-sanctioned campaign of anti-Semitism. Ivan then travels to Leningrad, where he finds work in a metal shop and rents a room from a widow who falls in love with him and shares stories from her past (most notably the forced collectivization of Ukrainian farms), providing a counterbalance to Ivan's experiences in Siberia. Suffering is everywhere, but Grossman finds no glory or redemption in it, and just when you think things can't get bleaker, he offers up a new vignette that sinks deeper into misery, though there is a glimmer of hope toward the end. The prose is rough in spots, but Grossman's individual by individual portrayal of anguish gives readers a heartrending glimpse of the incomprehensible. (Nov.) Review

"Interspersed with meditations on Russian history, the revolution, and the nature of violence and freedom, Everything Flows is Grossman's great moral reckoning with the crimes of Stalinism." —Daniel Beer, The Wall Street Journal“A half century after his death, Vasily Grossman's fiction still provides harrowing insight into the legacy of Stalinism, and the historical trauma that continues to fuel ethnic tensions within Ukraine.” —NPR Books"Vasily Grossman is the Tolstoy of the USSR" --Martin Amis"After he submitted his masterful World War II novel Life and Fate to a publisher in 1960, the KGB confiscated the manuscript, his notes and even his typewriter (the book was later smuggled out of the country and printed in 1974). But this didn’t quiet Grossman, whose indictments of Stalinist Russia were at least as damning as those of George Orwell and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Understandably bitter over the suppression of his work, the author worked on Everything Flows—a shorter, but even more eviscerating, meditation on the monstrous results of the Soviet experiment—until his death from cancer in 1964. This new translation brings his searing vision to light... Fortunately, the KGB couldn’t keep Grossman’s books under wraps forever. His testament stands as a fitting tribute to the millions of voices that were prematurely silenced."—Drew Toal, Time Out New York"...a richly-woven narrative of historical events and individual destinies — a masterpiece of pain, moral outrage and gallows humour. Grossman has become recognised not only as one of the great war novelists of all time but also as one of the first and most important of witnesses to the defence of Stalingrad, the fall of Berlin, the consequences of the Holocaust" —Business Standard A "brilliant and courageous novel...readers will find hope in the narrator's uncommon capacity to forgive and accept."–Library Journal"Few novels confront human suffering on as massive a scale as this one....Grossman's individual by individual portrayal of anguish gives readers a heartrending glimpse of the incomprehensible. " --Publishers Weekly"Remarkable...it trembles with the vision of freedom." --Irving Howe, The New York Times "[I]t is as eloquent a memorial to the anonymous little man in the Stalinist state as Dr. Zhivago is to the artistic spirit in post-Czarist Russia and The First Circle to the scientific intelligentsia." --Thomas Lask, The New York Times "Grossman traces the blame for the terror of the Stalin years back through Lenin, to the roots of the Russian character, to the mystical national soul that Russians have always considered their greatest strength...Grossman put his finger on the crux of the issue as today's Russians see it: What responsibility do they bear for the horrors perpetrated in the course of Russian and Soviet history?" --Los Angeles Times

I shared all this with my own peopleThere, where misfortune had abandoned us."Anna Akhmatova's RequiemIf Life and Fate (New York Review Books Classics) may rightfully be seen as Vasily Grossman's masterpiece, his Everything Flows may rightfully be seen as his testament, a requiem if you will not only for his own life but for the lives of those who lived in his time and place."Everything Flows" tells a simple, yet emotionally deep and politically nuanced tale. The story begins with the 1957 return to Moscow of Ivan Grigoryevich after 30 years of forced labor in the Gulag. 1957 marked the year, following Khrushchev's denunciation of the excesses of Stalin, in which the tide of prisoners returning from the Gulag reached its peak. He arrives at the Moscow flat of his cousin Nikolay. Nikolay, a scientist with less than stellar skills, has reached some measure of success at the laboratory through dint of being a survivor. The meeting in the flat is entirely unsatisfactory for both parties. Grossman paints a vivid picture of Nikolay, more than a bit jealous that Ivan's light had always shone brighter than his own prior to Ivan's arrest. Nikolay suffers from the guilt of one who was not arrested and who is painfully aware of the choices he made to keep from being arrested. It seems clear that Ivan represents a mirror into which Nikolay can see only his own hollow reflection.Ivan leaves Moscow for his old city of Leningrad, the place where he was first arrested in 1927. By chance, he runs into the person, Pinegin, whose denunciation placed him in jail in the first place. Once again, Ivan is a mirror and Pinegin is horrified at what he is faced with, what he has buried for thirty years. Ironically, and to great effect, we see Pinegin's horror recede once he settles down to a sumptuous lunch at a restaurant reserved for foreigners and party officials. Ivan does not know about the denunciation and Grossman here embarks on a discourse on the different types and forms of denunciation available to the Soviet citizen. It is a remarkable discourse that shows how many different ways there are to participate in a purge and how many ways there are to legitimize ones participation and/or acquiescence. From Leningrad Ivan travels to a southern industrial city where he finds work and eventually finds a deep and satisfying love in the person of his landlady Anna. The centerpiece of that relationship is the brutal honesty involved; Anna spends a night detailing her role in the pointless, needless famine that swept the Ukraine in 1932-1933. It is an account made even more chilling by the straightforward, confessional nature of its telling. But it is also redemptive and shines a light on what might be called Grossman's vision that love and freedom are two goals, not mutually exclusive, that an honest accounting of our lives forms the essence of our shared humanity. The above summary does not do justice to the power of Grossman's prose or to the literary and political importance of the work. Since the death of Stalin, the Soviet line had remained relatively firm - Stalin's excesses were the product of a disturbed mind that represented a horrible deviation from the theory and principles of Leninism. The USSR's best path was the one that returned it to the path created by Lenin. Khrushchev first enunciated this line. Even Gorbachev's perestroika was based on the theory that a return to first-principles, i.e. Leninism, would save the USSR from destruction.Grossman, prophetically, did not buy into this line and Everything Flows'last chapters are notable for a remarkable attack not only on Stalin but on Lenin and Lenin's anti-democratic tendencies that had more in common with Ivan the Terrible than the principles of revolutionary democracy. "All the triumphs of Party and State were bound up with the name of Lenin. But all the cruelty inflicted on the nation also lay - tragically - on Lenin's shoulders." Grossman may have been the first to make this leap and he paid the price for making that leap. (This involves the suppression of his Life & Fate and Everything Flows.) Grossman's explicit claim that Stalin was not a deviationist from Leninism but its natural-born progeny was profoundly subversive and there is no doubt in my mind that it was this difference that explains why, under Khruschev's 'thaw', that One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was publishe while Life and Fate and Everything Flows was banned.Despite the horrors set out, quietly and without excess rhetoric, Grossman returns to a somewhat optimistic vision of mans search for freedom: "No matter how mighty the empire, all this is only mist and fog and, as such, will be blown away. Only one true force remains; only one true force continues to evolve and live; and this force is liberty. To a man, to live means to be free."Robert Chandler's translation of Everything Flows is exquisite. He brings the same clarity and emotional investment in Grossman's work that he brought to his prize-winning translations of Platonov and Hamid Ismailov's The Railway. In short, Everything Flows is a treasure and I cannot recommend this book highly enough. L. Fleisig

EVERYTHING FLOWS is Grossman's last novel after LIFE AND FATE. Unlike that novel there is a central plot. Ivan has been released from a Soviet prison camp after 15 or 20 years. He wanders around in Moscow and Leningrad and sees family and people from the past.He eventually settles in a smaller town and gets a job.He has a relationship with his landlady and she dies. Then he goes to where he grew up - end of novel.Sounds boring - it isn't. I'd say close to half the novel is taken up by digressions. The digressions are by and large fascinating. His landlady was a minor participant in the collectivization of the Ukraine and tells a long and harrowing tale of terror. After her death , Ivan delivers his thoughts on Russia , Stalin and Lenin and it's strong stuff. In Soviet terms his comments on Lenin are pure heresy. This novel is an indictment of the Soviet Union and an effective one.Chances are you will come to this after LIFE AND FATE.This is a much shorter work and very different but the two books work well together.

The work moves a bit unevenly at the outset, following a survivor of the Gulags and his interactions with family, his reminescenses of his past and the displacement he feels for a time and Society to which he feels alienated. Alienation is a major part of the novel, with the protagonist unable to find any clear fit for himself after his years away from a world he previously understood. Upon review, the author seems to show that even that life itself was rather ill-fitting and nebulous. It is as if the world itself was amorphous as much as his current state, a place where all flows along, but flows without clear certainty of footing or permanence. The work seems to culminate with an alliance with an unlikely landlady, this seemingly as unnatural a fit at first as much anything else in this world.

I just finished "Everything Flows." It is one of literature's great gifts, one of the most insightful and moving books I have ever read. In a way, it is both uplifting and humbling at the same time. I just cannot say enough about the "testament" that this book is. Through Grossman's work, we, in some small way, can bear witness to an entire, tragic era.I will not repeat the details of Leonard Fleisig's outstanding and astute review of "Everything Flows," but simply add that this short book is a novella with connected essays that somehow reveals both the nature of the individual characters and of a whole society under siege. It is beautifully written and translated, and with great economy of style, Ivan and the other characters come alive and we seem to enter their inner beings.I have read a great deal about the Soviet experience, including Grossman's "Life and Fate" and Simon Sebag Montefiore's biography of Stalin and Stephen Cohen's one on Bukharin as well as the wonderful novels of Victor Serge. I highly recommend them all, but if you have to read one book about the Soviet tragedy, read "Everything Flows."I am so grateful to the New York Review of Books for retrieving so many lost treasures from the past.
