If you don't know that the Mr. Bojangles from the song is NOT Bill Robinson, you need to read this book. Robinson was to the world of entertainment what his friend Jackie Robinson was to sports. His talent, hard work, diligence and inner strength helped him succeed and endure the many trials and tribulations that African Americans in the early part of the 20th century were subjected to. But he overcame and conquered. He had weaknesses, like an obvious addition to gambling. But his dancing skills, charm, enthusiasm and electric personality helped make him America's favorite tap dancer.The book is well written with lots of interesting details. It sets the era and does not shrink from addressing the racist indignities that Mr. Robinson faced. But it is clear that the author understands and admires the man, accepting his frailties and lauding his achievements.

The Mr. Bojangles Bill Robinson biography was a delicious read . I really enjoyed reading about such a fascinating man ! He broke major barriers and I'll never forget him or his contribution to dance and American History .

Ali criticized Cassius Marcellus Clay, a great abolitionist. Ali hypocritcally adopted the name of a man who had many many slaves. Bojangles is no hypocrite. This work sets the record straight of his life and times. A great man.

You know I respect Mr. Robinson, he went thru a great deal during his lifetime. The book was a page turner, but Mr. Robinson had some vices that only a patient. person could deal with. I wonder if this is why he married, dated etc. younger ladies. I know that older females couldn't and or wouldn't put up with his antics. Realizing that he grew up in rough times, I wonder why Mr. Robinson never learned how to read.There were many typos such as comer for the word corner in the book, this was very aggravating to say the least.

I purchased Marshall Dotson’s book in order to have a greater understanding of how to develop goals for my characters and strengthen the plots of my stories. I have to say, this book far exceeded my expectations. Dotson uses a six-act structure (which can easily fit into a three-act structure) to show the progression of actions and goals. Mr. Dotson organizes each chapter brilliantly, so that there is no way you can move past that chapter without having a solid understanding of the concepts. He uses multiple examples from movies and books to show the progression of goals and actions in a story. He breaks each act down into a structure that is easy to follow and he includes a reference guide at the end with a complete outline of all six acts. I started taking notes until I realized that the reference guide provided everything I needed. He also gives a final outline of all the movies and books he referenced, so you can see how each follows this structure from beginning to end. As a bonus, Mr. Dotson writes with humor and there were many moments I found myself laughing at his jokes. I’ve read a lot of books on structure, but this one tops the list. I hope Mr. Dotson publishes more books on writing.

This is the best book on story structure I've read so far. Coming up with plot is one of my biggest struggles with writing and I need a lot of guidance. I rely on structure as prompts to help me think of plot points and scenes. I was previously using the three act structure but it's so vague. I manage to think of a story skeleton with it but have a hard time filling in the scenes between those points.Doston provides an in-depth look at each of the six acts AND the various points that make them up. He doesn't just say, for example, that the first act is the setup and leave it at that like many other resources. He explains exactly how the setup tends to happen (initial goal, oppressive opposition, disturbance, dilemma, new role), which helped me plan the first act better.Although he doesn't explicitly say this, his system also accounts for the character arc so you don't have to plan it separately. He provides many diverse examples and summarizes everything in a neat little package at the end for quick reference. I was going to create my own template but then I took a look at his website (sixactstructure.com) and he even has templates for you.I used the template to plan my next project and came up with a plot that I feel pretty pleased with. I haven't started writing it yet but I don't feel lost or unsure of what's going to happen, which is the #1 problem I have when I finally start writing a first draft. Filling out the template only took a couple hours, compared to the days I used to spent trying to think of plot.If you, like me, struggle with plot and find that the more structure and guidance you have, the better, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

A story starts at the beginning and finishes at the end. If it inspires, entertains and makes sense, it is a success. And if it doesn’t make sense, the structure has failed and the story has failed. Marshall Dotson has drawn out the map to make sure that your story makes sense in every sense of the storyworld word. Aptly entitled ACTIONS AND GOALS, he calls his work structure breakdowns.I challenge any screenwriter, from the most recent Academy Award winner to the newest newbee weekend pantser to go through no more than 5 pages of Dotson’s manual without stopping to hurry back to their working script with new and creative ideas. And it’s like that all the way through this insightful and entertaining book.This is not a formulistic straightjacket but a handsome workout suit of clothes that lends itself to freedom while being fashionably dressed. It is as thought-stimulating as any writer’s manual I’ve ever seen.Not only is the teaching material concise and relevant, but it’s also presented in a way that makes the examples he uses truly meaningful. They stimulate your own creativity in dealing with the story you’re writing. Tom Robbins' masterful descriptive writing and the depth of his development of the main characters commend the novel, but the story, itself, borders on fantasy. Fantasy. Science Fiction. Surrealism. Whatever label I think of doesn't quite fit, but it clearly lacks the realism of, say, a Cormac McCarthy novel. Since I prefer realism these days, the book only merits an average rating for purely reasons of personal taste. Robbins' descriptive prowess deserves a higher score, however, so if you enjoy skilled word craft, I can recommend it.

Ever since I bought this book,pretty well when it first reached Australia, it's constituted one of the mainstays of my library. That and the other Tom Robbins writings. Some books you can read many times throughout life and each time find something wonderful in them. All of Mr Robbins books are like that. They delight, sadden, make laughter happen or burst forth, turn you on (if you're open to that) and pop your cork. Just what you need in a book.

I never get tired of Tom Robbins. I've read everything I could get my hands on but mostly many years ago. A good young friend reminded me of his genius as she was just reading him for the first time, so I immediately downloaded this book. It is still wonderful in every way. I highlighted several sections - especially the often bizarre but oh so spot on philosophy of the "Chink".

A Japanese seer called 'the Chink', a male tycoon called 'countess', and a babe with thumbs the size of canoes -- what's not to love? I've read all Robbins' works, many multiple times, and 'Cowgirls' is always a favorite to go back to. My parents think it's foolish to read a book more than once -- "What? Did it have a different ending this time?" -- but it's been my experience that I come away from re-readings with different insights; no, the book is the same, but I am different.

The book is very different to what I read so far. Tom says he can spend a whole day on one sentence and his attention to the detail is felt from the book. The story is also good and it makes male readers to think differently about women's feelings and behaviour. I would be interested to know though if what Tom says is really what women think and do or whether it is just his male imagination.

I first read this book almost 40 years ago. Robbins must have rewritten it during those years. It was a totally different read this time. I've noticed that's happened several times in the last few years with several authors I reread. I have also noticed that all of the authors wrote more clearly this time. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon.

Great book. One of my favorites. I keep buying it for friends with a sense of humor.
