WOW! Was I pleasantly surprised with this book. I have been a collector and fan of the Smurfs since childhood. I own all things Smurfy and have read as much as I could get my hands on to educate myself with this phenomenon. There is no better book out there on this topic than this one! Matt.Murray goes back to the very start of the Smurfs creator, Peyo, and chronologically brings the reader all the way to present day with THE SMURFS movie. It gives the reader insight as to the history of these creatures and documents their rise to fame in great detail. By not just focusing on the many toys and products the Smurfs have been tied in to, this book embodies the entire Smurf legacy and is a fantastic "celebration of tiny blue proportions!"

But the smurf part is all the additional smurf it comes with in its pages: smurfers, mini smurfers, smurfs, even mini smurflets, some in clever cellophane smurfets. Every smurf was a surprise (and not the smurfing kind)! I agree with the other smurfewer that it should have more pages dedicated to smurf and smurf. I think there's not a simple smurf of the delicious Smurfberry cereal or the cookies that I smurfed as a smurf. Also a list of most Smurfs should have been smurfed, as a smurfologist the author should smurf all 100+ of them, right? Only major smurfs were smurfewed.The only smurf I find is that too much smurf was dedicated to the new smurf. Since it is so smurf I think it was smurfy.Anyway, buy this smurf. You won't smurf it!Now for you non-Smurf speakers out there the English version:I love this book! It has lots of information about the Smurfs' creation and success. But the best part is all the additional stuff it comes with in its pages: stickers, mini posters, cels, even mini booklets, some in clever cellophane pockets. Every page was a surprise (and not the exploding kind)! I agree with the other reviewer that it should have more pages dedicated to memorabilia and merchandise. I think there's not a simple photo of the delicious Smurfberry cereal or the cookies that I adored as a kid. Also a list of most Smurfs should have been included, as a smurfologist the author should know all 100+ of them, right? Only major characters were reviewed.The only con I find is that too much space was dedicated to the new movie. Since it is so recent I think it was unnecessary.Anyway, buy this book. You won't regret it!

Book had water damage. Not what I wanted for a coffee table book

This awesome put together book was for a good friend of mine who is into Smurfs. Originally saw it for sale in a store, came on Amazon and found it for HALF the price and my friend loves it!

For anyone who has an admiration for the tiny blue people 3 apples high, this book is a must. It explores the origins of how they came from the mind of creator Peyo & how they evolved into the characters that we still love to this day. Lots of great art & extremely informative. A must for any Smurf fan , young or old.

I bought this book for my 11 year old son who loves the Smurfs. The book was in great condition. Very good price.

This book is just what I needed to start to get into Photoshop. Too many times, people who write books for beginners forget that beginners are starting from no knowledge at all. Too often, these authors skip over some basic information, forgetting that readers are starting from scratch. Children in general (and some of us adults) love scratch sniff books). This book has the correct concept but based on the pictures, you'd assume it's for a toddler-younger preschooler. It is a long book (likely 32 pages) FILLED with many words on each page. Way too detailed without an entertaining story line! More words than Pinkalicious/page to give you an idea. The scented pages are VERY FEW, every four pages or so. I'm sending it back b/c I know the girls will just use it to scratch/sniff and not listen to any of the story. Great idea, boring long story.

I read a bunch of the bad reviews after I bought it, and I was so nervous that I was going to be disappointed in the stickers. So many reviews said they didn't smell, but every single one was a little blast from the past. I was hoping my son would love this as much as I did when I got mine 30 years ago, and he does!

I had a copy of this book as a child and still have it after all these years. However, the scents all smell like "book" now and despite my best efforts and memories of the smells, they were beginning to fade. All my kids love the book as well and enjoy scratching the stickers for tiny whiffs of the lingering scents.And then I found a new copy! I was so excited that it was still in print, and that the price was so low. I ordered a new copy for my kids to enjoy the actual scents with the story.The scents are apple pie, pine tree, gingerbread, peppermint, cocoa, and orange. All of them smell as good as I remember and they do make the book special. The story is also really cute and captures the excitement of getting ready for Christmas. The illustrations are pretty and the book has nice hard cover. The only difference I noticed was that the new copy has some glitter on the cover. My girls like this addition, but I don't really care either way.I love having the new copy of this, but I hung on to the old one for sentimental reasons. The "book" smell is another smell I associated with Christmas because of how much of a tradition this book became.

This book is very cute and a great story. I still remember this book from when I was a child. I give it only 3 stars because the "smelly stickers" do not last. We bought this book last year (2016), and the stickers had absolutely no smell this season (2017). I think we paid around $8.50 for the book. I ended up buying another copy of the book this year so the kids would have fun with the scented stickers again. We've had the book for a couple weeks and the stickers are already losing their scent. We've read it probably 10-15 times. I would bet that if I could find my 1992 copy of this book at my parent's house, the stickers would still have a scent. They just don't make things as well as they used to.

What a huge disappointment. I have such great memories of this book growing up. In a time which technology rules our imaginations I thought I would share this wonderful book with my son. What a waste of money! They replaced the scratch and sniff portions of the pictures with cheap non-fragrant sticker dots. Most of the stickers smell like paint and nothing else. Don't waste your money and also have your memories tainted.

This was my daughter's favorite Christmas book when she was little and it got stored away and got all musty smelling. I went on line and found you can get a kit to renew the scratch and sniff "patches", but I couldn't get the musty smell out, so I bought her a new one, and one for my grandson, too. He liked his, and my all grown up daughter was delighted with her new one. I highly recommend this for the little ones. I'm sure it will be the Christmas book they will treasure, especially since the sweet smells can be renewed.

The smell stickers don't work well even in a brand new book. My daughter and I love reading it though! The book has been improved in our opinion by the addition of sparkly glitter on the cover and on the Christmas tree. My daughter is fascinated with it. She is weirded out by the father bear's pipe, kind of a dated image in a kids' book, and is always asking if his head is on fire. I find this pretty funny.I thought I remembered there being a page with a sugar plum to smell? I may be wrong. This book actually has my daughter smelling things around her and talking about how they smell. "So piney." "So spicy." She smells the plastic candy canes on our tree now. It kind of jump started new vocabulary! So thanks, Little Bear.

I bought this book in the 70's for a niece and she LOVED the smells, so I was excited to find it for my great niece/nephew. I was so disappointed when it arrived--almost no smell no matter how much we scratched, and for a few the smell was just strange. I would NOT recommend this book.

This is a Christmas book that you will remember from your childhood. If you do remember it you will certainly remember the scents as well as the story and memories of Christmas is long gone. As everyone else has said it's a wonderful story and cebook to treasure and keep forever. Unfortunately the scents don't make sense. They seem to be tired and worn out and have little or no smell. The ones that do smell are faint at best or just some Chemical odor. A real shame. I guess perhaps the scents don't last.I'm not going to return it I will keep it for the story lesson learned.

It's a tough read, don't think it isn't, but it is lovely in both its hope and its hopelessness. For all mankind: unattainable. There is often the positive notion, in its most hopeful moment contrasted by the basest derogation by man in which there surely appears no hope for him. It appears that most people, the generally unread, have done much quoting of Nietzsche out of context and ultimately, Nietzsche must have known he'd be oft misquoted for he states: `I suspect ye would call my Superman - a devil!' (2021). In the appendix it is also a note to casual readers - this is not where to being reading any Nietzsche, so if you're starting here - stop!. This is `the opus' which is the child of many works of previous thought, for the future love of all that is Nietzsche, don't start here! This is the allegorical surmising of much of Nietzsche's work. Quite fantastic.This work has the ability to present in a very new-age fashion, per philosophically its primary goal is transcendental, to go beyond man's current state, to shed the chains of our egos, to experience the world sensually without intense derisive judgment and to laugh at our situations of gravity. It is fantastic in that because it's a book `for all and none', anyone spiritually inclined can sense the weightiness as Nietzsche points out all the flaws of humanity and casts his wish for the recognition of the Superman, for something better than what we are, even if we shall never achieve his ends.As a social commentary of the people of the times, what he sees and experiences around himself. Astute observations of the workings of mankind, essentially stating that we've turned away from the true meaning of `God', and that far too many people place value erroneously in inane and mistakenly virtuous things. When what is lacking, both secular and non, is the true essence of `love'. This is the closest to `God' man can get; the Superman is meant to surpass humanity. However, having such an appetite for war, self-destruction / deception, clinging to idols, self-loathing, and `shame, shame, shame - that is the history of man' (1267) motif, the success rate is unlikely at best. In fact, the Superman has never been seen by Zarathustra. There is both Aeschylus-ian warning of man's poorer qualities and his wisdom in this work. Nietzsche was a big fan of the Greek play-writes.Zoroaster, as a historical being is relevant in the espoused philosophy as the goal is to sustain the truth through constructive thought, words and deeds. This ties to Nietzsche's `Superman' - a man of higher values than today's common man, and as a most basic principle - all that stems from power is good (master-morality); all from weakness is bad, but there is no lasting good nor bad, and good and bad are based relatively. The pinnacle though is the `Will to Power', which encompassing the `Will to Truth', is essentially man commanding himself and the desire to command others, recognizing that everything is done for power, that even those commanded want to command - part of the human condition. Doing this in egoless fashion opens the world of experience, truth, and sets man out only to experience his sensory world with what little rationality is found in anything. The `Will to Power' is also where redemption is best found but never to be - `to transform every "it was" into "thus would I have it!" (1952), for no amount of Willing can change the past, our wills greatest weakness - desiring a disposition more toward the import of the now.Zarathustra finds no greater power on earth than `good' and `bad'. And to this he adds that nothing is universally good or bad between differing people, but posits that this valuation of things was meant only to give a human meaning to the world, and the herd has always existed before the ego, thusly do people somewhat unwittingly follow their cultural bonds.In the first book we encounter Zarathustra who wishes to leave man and sink to his abyss, for he realizes that he is nothing like them, and they scorn him as we see him enter a town and attempt to explain his philosophy of the `Superman' - `I want to teach men the sense of their existence, which is the Superman' (446). In this section it appears despite being a pariah, Zarathustra is both cynical and hopeful in man's ascension - `It is time for man to fix his goal. It is time for man to plant the germ of his highest hope.' (400) Zarathustra then decides he needs companions and begins delivery of his discourses upon a variety of topics, the primary focus is the creation of the Superman: `Let your love to life be love to your highest hope; and let your highest hope be the highest thought of life! Your highest thought... and it is this: man is something that is to be surpassed.' (797) This is related to the `Will to Truth' in that it is `the thinkableness of all being' (1599) and this is a direct step in surpassing man.Man can't create God, or Nietzsche's Will to Truth, a being who has experienced all human sensory experiences. Creating is the great salvation from suffering, however suffering is necessary for the creative facet to appear, as is a great transformation.Zarathustra speaks of finding his soul through loneliness and metamorphosis of the soul (camel, lion, child). Once a man's soul resembles that of a child he may will his own world sans the artifice of socialized structure. He advocates the `Backworlds' where men create in their loneliness. However, there are also many superfluous men, `marred is life by the many-too-many.' (754) and his hope is they're quickly suckered out of this life by those that preach the eternal afterlife.Zarathustra recognizes the struggle against the ego, generally in vain as it guides us through our feeling states in this life. He also states his disposition of those whom despise the body as those who would make each man marginal, and these sorts are often of the non-secular variety, the preachers of death and those that wish away with the corporeal life. As a reaction against the typical herd mentality Zarathustra also attacks the organization known as `the state', or that establishment which perpetuates values and virtues unto it's all too superfluous populous. Smaller than the state is the city, which essentially serves the same purpose.To Zarathustra virtues create a battle ground where the conflict is often too much for man to persevere against. `... one thing is the thought, another thing is the deed, and another thing is the idea of the deed. The wheel of causality doth not roll between them.' (670) The essence is to do good work.The end of the work surmises with a litany of characters dining with Zarathustra in his cave. Here Zarathustra suffers the philosophical attacks these men were prone to deliver. He defends himself, the philosophy of his Superman, Will to Power and his estimation of the social conditions he sees himself living in. Ultimately all joy is deeper than grief and all joys want eternity, the noontide arrives, man must be surpassed!Quotes:Meister Eckhardt: `The fleetest beast to bear you to perfection is suffering.' (214)`Life is hard to bear: but do not affect to be so delicate! We are all of us fine sumpter asses and assesses.' (705)`It is true we love life; not because we are wont to live, but because we are wont to love. There is always some madness in love. But there is always, also, some method in madness.' (706)`when I saw my devil, I found him serious, thorough, profound, solemn:... Not by wrath, but by laughter, do we slay.' (710)`... the worst enemy thou canst meet, wilt thou thyself always be... Thou lonesome one, thou goest the way to thyself!... thou goest the way of the creating one: a God wilt thou create for thyself out of thy seven devils!' (1009)`But let this be your honour: always to love more than ye are loved, and never be the second.' (1030)`Devise me, then, the love which not only beareth all punishment, but also all guilt! Devise me, then, the justice which acquitteth every one except the judge!' (1058)`Bitterness is in the cup even of the best love: thus doth it cause longing for the Superman' (1089)`Thus spake the devil unto me, once on a time: `Even God hath his hell: it is his love for man." (1296)`That YOUR very Self be in your action, as the mother is in the child: let that be YOUR formula of virtue!' (1374)`do I counsel you, my friends: distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful!' (1433)`Where one can no longer love, there should one - pass by!' (2422)`This-is now MY way, - where is yours? ... For THE way - it doth not exist!' (2643)`What dot it matter that ye have failed! How many things are still possible! The nietzschean classic! Love it or hate it, its a book with great poetical imagery and the search of the übermensch. This inversion of Zarathustra summarizes Nietzsche's critique of western civilization, good and evil and monotheism.

Wonderful.It's as expected.

For you truly deep thinkers, stop reading this sentence and go pick this up now. If you're just a beginner in the thinking arts, or you're looking to dabble in philosophy, go to something easier. For me, this book is like reading Shakespeare if he wrote a philosophical treatise on the struggle for individualism in a body that craves uniqueness, yet is immersed and suffocated by the herd that it needs to maintain a lifestyle it is accustomed to. Mr. Nietzsche manages to show you the foolishness of man, led by his carnal appetites and so easily influenced by other fools, while trying to hope that one day the ideal superman will be possible in all of us. It is hard to imagine anyone reading it a hundred years ago and understanding the heavy metaphor and symbolism, but I guess it also may show me how far we have strayed from this introspective style of thinking in "modern" times. Here's a tidbit to pique your interest and show the man's purpose behind laying out a laundry list of man's vice and folly: "He who hath to be a creator in good and evil - verily he hath first to be a destroyer, and break values in pieces." Whether you think he's speaking of an imperfect creator, or a system of duality that requires a little ying and yang co-dependency, this book gets you thinking. Take the questions from the book and find out if the answers work in your world or if they are simply hogwash. But know that this book will start you on a path that could change you if you know how to use it properly. It's less a matter of whether Mr. Nietzsche has hit upon universal truths completely in this work, more so than he simply leads you to a search for knowledge.

"Zarathustra the godless!" Written in a unique literary style with a unique philosophical perspective. You experience this book more than you read it. You read a magazine, right? This book is deep and heavy and all us mortals can do is try to wrap our heads around the genius of Nietzsche. Masterpiece!

It is a good read. A little different then the books of Nietzsche I have read before. Might be a little hard to understand for those that have not read other works of Nietzsche before this.
