I had no experience in JavaScript, all my coding was done in C#.NET, Delphi, Java and before reading this book first I started with JavaScript, the Good Parts book and failed...then moved to Secrets of JavaScript Ninja book and again failed, they were not for beginners...Then I came to this one and awesome book. It is from beginner to Professional all in one. Don't worry about the size of the book if you are a developer you can read it much faster because you don't really need all of it if it is teaching you what is a variable and fast forward to the parts you don't know...If you are new to JavaScript first read this book before reading the other two books I mentioned above.

Overall useful for experienced developers of any language. That is to say, if you are a beginner programmer, I would find another book (and language quite frankly). As far as the good, this book seems to cover everything that deals with JavaScript and the browser without bringing in frameworks and libraries. The reason I rate this 4 instead of 5 is because it's organized a bit strange. For example, the author spends a lot of time talking about what variables are, the different types of variables (primitive values and references), and how they are copied. The thing is that there aren't any surprises here, and he could have explained this in about half the space. Additionally, he talks a lot about how scope, variables, and execution context pertain to objects prior to ever explaining what objects are. He then calls out with and try/catch. Then he only explains with, but the example cannot be executed yet because with is a way to assign execution context to a single object. He doesn't explain try/catch for JavaScript at all. Moreover, if you read JavaScript: The Good Parts by Crockford, he explains why with is actually quite ambiguous and will silently create undefined global variables if you attempt to access undefined properties. No mention of this in Professional JavaScriptThis is all just to get to this point: There is a lot of good information here. However, the information isn't well organized, and I am not sure who the audience is. Some of the information is also incomplete. If you're an experienced programmer learning JavaScript this is a fine starting point. There are other starting points to consider too. For my tastes, I would prefer something that is better organized and went more indepth into the language features and spent less time explaining standard concepts in OO languages. Or do so and market the book as a beginner's book.

There is a line from Lion King where little Simba comments on his Uncle Scar's weirdness. Scar replies "You have no idea." The main point of this review is that Javascript is a really weird contraption, and that this book points this out in a way that is very helpful for programmers coming from more traditional compiled programming languages. I have programmed in C, C++, Java, C# for many years. I have read other books on Javascript which tried to teach by examples. With normal programming languages, this works fine. However, within a few hours with this book I realized that to understand Javascript, you must give up on some basic expectations you may have as a code developer. This was a surprise to me, but crucial to be able to learn Javascript well enough to work on non-trivial projects with existing code. Javascript is simply bizarre. There are many different ways to implement object-oriented patterns which all use different-looking code, and have subtle differences, making it so easy to get bitten by unintended consequences. From this book I learned that there is no one solid way to implement the basic pattern of your code, you must make a choice. If you try to read a Javascript book which teaches by examples, you will be in trouble when you actually start to modify someone else's Javascript code which used a different pattern. This book doesn't just show trivial examples, it methodically goes through how it works in enough detail so you can understand how it is working under the hood. Also, the text has plenty of warnings about buggy implementations and common pitfalls. After you get about 1/4 of the way through it you will be wondering how any Javascript code runs on Internet Explorer at all, since about every other page is another 'this-is-broken-in-IE' warning boxes. The text is written in a very clear style, never glossing over anything. It isn't at all cute or made to be entertaining, just kind of down to business. There is no question I will be using this book nearly every time I have to work on Javascript code. If you are just looking to make a little mouse button handler in a web page, this is probably not the book for you. It does not jump right into little useful examples. If you are coming from a programming background in traditional compiled languages, and you want to know more about Javascript than little tiny scripts, IMHO this book is absolutely necessary. You will never regret purchasing it.

I've almost finished this book (up to Chapter 23 out of 25). I taught myself web development over the past few years and so would describe my skills as intermediate, and was lacking understanding in some areas.This book contains a lot of good explanations of how JavaScript works and how to use it to its full potential. There are plenty of useful code snippets that the author presents and then explains. He also includes cross-browser solutions to various issues which is very helpful.The author introduces various new JavaScript APIs associated with HTML5 which are gaining fairly good browser support as of early 2014.Although this third edition was written a few years ago, it is still highly relevant. Just a tip for others buying the third edition - you might want to skip over Chapter 19: Ecmascript for XML. It describes E4X; a technology which has since been deprecated.

I purchased this book after hearing an HBR IdeaCast interview with professors Ruback and Yudkoff. Their book provides a clear and thorough but concise roadmap to anyone seriously interested in pursuing entrepreneurship through acquisition of a small business. First of all, the book will help you decide whether entrepreneurship is a good match to your personality, experience and professional desires. The remaining chapters walk you through the steps of preparing for and conducting a search and completing the acquisition process.It's clear to me that the authors have a great combination of knowledge, experience and personal interest in entrepreneurship through acquisition that informed this book and their other articles, interviews and publicly available materials. While I have a professional background in finance and institutional investing, I am currently preparing to search for a business to acquire and am very grateful to have access to the information in this book, which was previously only available to HBS students through Ruback and Yudkoff's class.

Makes for a good text book, however, it seems to me that the intended audience is the ivy league type entrepreneur. The book is written from a Harvard perspective and once you look at the kind of number$ they budget for acquisition, you'll understand. I've read it, and have taken away some questions to ask when starting to acquire a biz, however, I'm sure there are more practical books out there.

This is a very comprehensive and useful book. It takes the reader chronologically through the business-buying process, making it both enjoyable to read from front to bad but also very useful as a quick-reference took for various aspects of the process.Only negative is that I don't think they spend enough time on the downside of buying a business. They talk about the dangers of not finding one to buy, but they don't paint a thorough or realistic enough picture of how tough it can be once you're in it, especially if a crisis hits.But overall - a great tool and highly recommended.

Very good introduction to how to buy a business. You will become more knowledge about what to discuss with brokers, sellers, accountants, and attorneys you meet while searching for a business to buy.The one negative is a lot of repetition of similar ideas such as buying a business for 3-5 times EBITDA, the steps in due diligence, and fundraising. The book seems to cycle through these concepts 3 times. The repetition gets a little dull.Nevertheless, still a great book to read and very informative!

I purchased this book after hearing the HBR podcast and reading the HBR article by Professors Ruback and Yudkoff. I never thought I would describe a business book as a page-turner, but as the authors explain the idea of entrepreneurship through acquisition and offer examples of the types of businesses that are enduringly profitable, itâ€™s hard to put the book down. That wasnâ€™t just my experience with the book. Two friends and I have now launched a search fund. This book has been our roadmap as we raise funds and search for the right company.

This book is a great read, completely recommend it for someone interested in buying a company - even if it doesn't quite fit the mold suggested by this book.

Having a hard time getting through it because of the cutesy, tabloid-like lingo author uses. Every other sentence is a punny alliteration. It has some decent info, but it's written like a Seventeen Magazine. Some literary devices peppered in here or there would be just fine, but it's just about every single sentence.

Okay, so to be fair, this is a manual and if you need a manual, it's great. It's not really meant for a one sitting read-through. In this respect, the prose is easy to read, the digital text organized with helpful in-text links, and it's pretty short and sweet. A doctor could probably tell you everything in this book, but there may be things you wouldn't think to bring up that'll help you prepare better than you would otherwise.That said, if, like me, you were thinking, "Maybe I'm just not sure about getting pregnant because I need to educate myself!" and plan to read it in one sitting, don't get this book. Being a manual, this guidebook will cover all the good things, but also ALL THE HORRIBLE THINGS THAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG, and in one sitting it's exhausting and nerve-wrecking. If you're in 100%, you might feel assured having all these helpful checklists and reminders and vocabulary lists, but, if not, you might end up feeling even less ready and a bit unnerved.

The book had tons of good information in it, but it was overwhelmed with the author's constant remarks and attempts at joking. I understand it's done to relate to the consumer, but when it's literally in every other sentence, it's a bit much. If she toned it done a bit, I would've enjoyed it more.

I thought I was educated, but I learned so much from this book. I found this book while looking for What to Expect Your Child's First Year, which I wanted to read because I work with infants and its always nice to get more information from different places. when books are in a series, I like to read all of them, so I started with this one and will continue through the child's second year book. I didn't know what to expect from this book starting out, but I am glad I read it. I have no children and was interested in what women go through when they are pregnant, I never even thought about the before pregnancy process. The parts about hormonal changes and how to recognize them in your own body set of a light bulb above my head. I read sections out of order and reread some, Overall I really enjoyed this book. It also served as an introduction and I took some of the topics and conducted further research.

LOVE this book. It touches on everything!! One of my favorite things about it is that you don't have to start reading from page one. You can look at the table of contents and go straight to the chapters that you're interested in at that time. I have read this entire book several times, just not directly from one cover to the next. I should point out that I read the original edition. I have only begun reading this updated version that I love so far just as much.

Definitely some great information, but it is a little repetitive. I like the boxes aimed at future fathers, but I feel like the entire book should have an audience of future parents, not just future moms. I would like my husband to get all of the information, not just the boxes.

Most of the was "well, obviously" type of stuff. It often read as condescending.And the formatting is so distracting.

Informational and concise but wish it wasnâ€™t so redundant/ repeating so much content across the book. It was a struggle to get through, wish there was more citations/ interpretation but I did read through it all, just to be sure I didnâ€™t miss the key points. Iâ€™m sure whoever is a first time TTC candidate can skip a major portion of this book (though if necessary, could be good starting resource if there are fertility issues to explore / options).

I am honored to have met Ms. Rough, but even if I hadn't, I would be eager to recommend her novella-length work. While this, generally, is a story about Ms. Rough's journey to learn more about her Estonian great-grandmother, her lush, insightful observations illustrate a universal longing for adventure as well as the desire to understand one's past (so as to fully live in the present).As I knew nothing--NOTHING--about Estonia, I was delighted to be invited into Ms. Rough's adventures. I now have a colorful sense of Estonia's earthy people, their language, the smell of the sea and the simplicity of their lives . . . and yes, the temperature of their saunas.I highly recommend this jewel of a story.

It was so satisfying to sit down and enter into this story. Bonnie Rough writes in such an engaging way, I found I became so immersed in the story, I forgot where I was in my own world. For me, that is the best compliment I can give the writer. Bonnie writes in an authentic, honest, and open way that is was hard not to be pulled in. There are so many scenes I want to share, but I also don't want to take away your experience of the book. Just know, it's thoughtfully written, you will travel to new places, and you will always connect saunas with this book. I knew nothing about Estonia when beginning this book and feel Bonnie opened up a new place for me. Really, a lovely, enjoyable read.

The Girls, Alone is very well-written. The author's voice is authentic and revealing, descriptive and clear. I felt along for the ride as she and her travel companion searched for answers and exposed more questions. I was surprised by the humor and allured by the mundane aspects of their travels, encounters and locales. As an avid shvitzer, I appreciated the sauna adventures. Rough's insightful descriptions of human bodies -- her own, her companion and those they met along the way -- show how each unique vessel provides a glimpse into the collective nature of our human condition.

As other reviewers noted, I couldn't have located Estonia on a map. Having read this short book, however, I am left with little interest in Estonia -- but an eagerness to read more by the talented author. I have already picked up her earlier memoir because I read this. Her writing is engaging, with humor as well as insight. She brings fresh views of motherhood as well as writing ....this was short, but powerful. Very glad to have discovered the book, and the author.

Bonnie Rough's tale of her travels and quest for deeper understanding of her Estonian roots is an honest and haunting account of what so many of us long for. We all hope that our own brief time on earth is meaningful. As we get older, we see that what defines meaningful are the intangibles we pass from one generation to the next. Bonnie's narrative style makes it easy to get lost right alongside her and Mary. And her stripped honesty comes off not as naivety, but as perhaps the only solid way to connect us all -- skin tags, mispronunciations, folds and flaws. It is a must-read for any woman who's ever wondered how the line of mothers from her own past collide into her one imperfect being.

I love books when, after a page or two, you forget your reading a book as you become more and more absorbed by the story and the characters. This is one of those books. The writing is transporting and memorable; personal without being indulgent. After reading this, I feel like I've not only been to Estonia but, more importantly, inside the writer's mind. In short, this is a beautiful book that hits all the right notes - and not too many either: at just 69 pages, the length feels perfect too.

I so wanted to love this book and to really learn something from it about Estonia's difficult history as it's not a topic I've encountered often. However, I wasn't hooked by the descriptions of food and felt myself wanting to ask more questions of the people the author encounters. In the end, it's exactly what it says - 6 days in a country that is certainly difficult to navigate at times and I don't know that I ended with much more information than that with which I began.

The author's charming ability to make fun of herself and take herself seriously make her a delightful travel companion as she investigates lineage, the ravages of war on a nation, the ravages of experience on bodies, and the meaning of place and home. She inspires me to enjoy my own place, time, and age, and also made me want to hop on the next flight to my matrilineal origins!

Pretty basic outline, described in a few different scenarios to help get the creative juices flowing. Its not going to write the plan for you, but it will help provide that inspiration to get it done.

This is good for what it was, its VERY short, much like all these style books. I don't know why I thought it would be longer, I don't know how much information I expected a book on a single plan to entail. But the information was good, learned something new.

I had heard of 30/60/90 day plans, but never knew it could be so valuable. This makes it easy to understand and how to create one. The best part is that if you use it in an interview, it can get you a job offer. It worked for me and it can work for anyone else willing to take an hour to prepare a 30/60/90 day plan. This was the best interview advice I have ever seen!

30/60/90 is an interesting and apparently successful means of landing the job. Married up with other interview resources, this may be considered top of the line in resource material. A MUST READ

Also it's not an enjoyable or interesting textbook its a lot of reading and long chapters with a lot of examples.

I've worked in magazine editing the majority of my career, and have recently attended a few news journalism writing and editing classes. This was my textbook for all of them. It's full of great advice and examples for crafting a news story and honing your writing skills for a news publication. I'd recommend it to writers who want to break into the space, or haven't had any formal training.

I am excited to get into this book. It contains a lot of material about article, paragraph, and sentence structure. It also explains how to extract the most interesting part of the story to entice readers. I found many chapters in this book that will help me construct articles in a logical fashion.I was impressed with the speed of delivery. I received the book just a few days after I ordered it.

Bought this for basic writing and reporting class. Quite comprehensive.

The author admits that this book is not intended to be a comprehensive look at the breadth of, or the technology behind, the surveillance being inflicted on people daily in the US. Rather this book is a collection of essays exploring the emotional and societal impact surveillance has on people, something the author refers to as the "soft-tissue damage" suffered from our lives being constantly observed, sorted, archived, and judged.This book raises a ton of important considerations and insights into modern surveillance and its impacts on our lives and for that reason I cannot help but recommend it, however unfortunately it offers very little by way of answers to the questions it raises or evidence of any kind and the writing suffers from a few problems which keep it from being everything it could have been.There have been many studies done on the effectiveness of surveillance, and on it's impact on people's mental health, their performance, and their behavior, but you will not find those studies mentioned here or their findings discussed. When this book isn't raising questions about those very topics it's almost entirely a mixture of the authors feelings, anecdotes and speculations.The writing itself is pretty uneven from chapter to chapter. I found the worst chapters to be "Growing Up Observed" and "Watching Waldon". I had looked forward to reading "Growing Up Observed" because the reality of children being constantly monitored, observed, and recorded is extremely relevant and represents a recent and major change in the lives of American youth, but the chapter is small and deals far too much with the author's own childhood. "Watching Waldon" is about the surveillance of wilderness and remote locations and while it brings up some very important issues much of it amounts to nothing more than the author's speculation of what Thoreau might have thought about things along with quite a bit of wandering off topic into Thoreau himself. There are a few pages in that chapter that seemed to ramble on a bit while doing nothing but asking the same questions or making the same observations repeatedly. There are also occasions in this book where the authors personal politics and SJW bent come to light. For example, there were places where the author seemed so obsessed with the color of people's skin (white men in particular) that I found myself distracted by his prejudices over his points. That said, on the whole this is an easy read that had no problem keeping me interested. I also give it credit for providing sources and an index.The topic of how surveillance (whether by government, corporations, schools, parents, or churches) shapes our lives and behaviors is such an important topic. Even if you already have concerns and knowledge about the subject going in, this book will absolutely leave you with more to think about and probably a few new concerns. By its end I'd flagged about 20 pages which contained things I wanted to research further later. It's biggest flaw is that it doesn't go far enough to try to answer it's own questions and in some cases didn't go far enough from the author's own experiences and perspectives, but I wouldn't let that stop you from reading it.

This book mentions about what the author of the book feels are positive and negative things concerning surveillance. It says that some people may feel that a baby monitoring system and being able to monitor an elderly person are positive things. George Orwell in his novel 1984 introduced the world to Big Brother. Some people feel that surveillance narrows options. Some people hate being filmed by a stranger. They feel that this is the United States and they have the choice that they do not want people taking pictures of them. Security cameras have been used more for ogling than for actual security. Caesars Atlantic City Hotel was fined $80,000 because its employees used CCTV cameras to ogle women in 2000 and 2001. Sometimes some cameras can be used an inducement to commit some wrong, not a deterrent. No one entity has exclusive control over the landscape of surveillance. Corporations and governments are acting in isolation. Fearing that CCTV operators could misinterpret even harmless behaviors, some people have altered their behavior.

WOW! Was I pleasantly surprised with this book. I have been a collector and fan of the Smurfs since childhood. I own all things Smurfy and have read as much as I could get my hands on to educate myself with this phenomenon. There is no better book out there on this topic than this one! Matt.Murray goes back to the very start of the Smurfs creator, Peyo, and chronologically brings the reader all the way to present day with THE SMURFS movie. It gives the reader insight as to the history of these creatures and documents their rise to fame in great detail. By not just focusing on the many toys and products the Smurfs have been tied in to, this book embodies the entire Smurf legacy and is a fantastic "celebration of tiny blue proportions!"

But the smurf part is all the additional smurf it comes with in its pages: smurfers, mini smurfers, smurfs, even mini smurflets, some in clever cellophane smurfets. Every smurf was a surprise (and not the smurfing kind)! I agree with the other smurfewer that it should have more pages dedicated to smurf and smurf. I think there's not a simple smurf of the delicious Smurfberry cereal or the cookies that I smurfed as a smurf. Also a list of most Smurfs should have been smurfed, as a smurfologist the author should smurf all 100+ of them, right? Only major smurfs were smurfewed.The only smurf I find is that too much smurf was dedicated to the new smurf. Since it is so smurf I think it was smurfy.Anyway, buy this smurf. You won't smurf it!Now for you non-Smurf speakers out there the English version:I love this book! It has lots of information about the Smurfs' creation and success. But the best part is all the additional stuff it comes with in its pages: stickers, mini posters, cels, even mini booklets, some in clever cellophane pockets. Every page was a surprise (and not the exploding kind)! I agree with the other reviewer that it should have more pages dedicated to memorabilia and merchandise. This awesome put together book was for a good friend of mine who is into Smurfs. Originally saw it for sale in a store, came on Amazon and found it for HALF the price and my friend loves it!

For anyone who has an admiration for the tiny blue people 3 apples high, this book is a must. It explores the origins of how they came from the mind of creator Peyo & how they evolved into the characters that we still love to this day. Lots of great art & extremely informative. A must for any Smurf fan , young or old.

I bought this book for my 11 year old son who loves the Smurfs. The book was in great condition. Very good price.

This book is just what I needed to start to get into Photoshop. Too many times, people who write books for beginners forget that beginners are starting from no knowledge at all. Too often, these authors skip over some basic information, forgetting that readers are starting from scratch. I have just started on this book but it is very well written and introduces the reader to all the basics. For anyone like me who is completely new to Photoshop, I highly recommend this book. If you are already into Photoshop this book would probably not be good for you. This book is for the person just starting Photoshop and is perfect for those people.

One of my favorite hobbies when I have free time is doing photography. I love to capture moments planned and unplanned but not every captures are great, there are some that needs to be edited, improved and enhanced to look more beautiful and mesmerizing. I am doing this hobby for several years now and Photoshop captures my attention to try and practice some things that could be handy for me. I am so thankful that this book educates me from basic to advance tips and strategies in using Photoshop and how it could greatly improved me not just an enhancer but a photo lover.

I will have to re-read and take my time to get it all, I appreciate that there is a section that answer most of the questions I have. I am bit disappointed that there are no pictures, to help with the illustrations given, as a visual learner this is important for me.Iâ€™m learning bit by bit how to master Photoshop.
