This book becomes a bit of a tedious read, except for the fact of the tremendous drama surrounding the Herculean effort to raise the stricken submarine. Truth be told, very few ships have ever been raised after sinking in deep water (water over 90 meters, 3 atmospheres). This boat was at 132 feet (over 120 meters, 4 atmospheres) and the diving equipment was primitive compared to modern systems and equipment. Those sailors performed a heroic job, period!A note: As you read this book, stop a few times & close your eyes. Imagine that you are standing on a sloping deck (15+ degrees) in muddy water so thick that you can cut it with a knife and wearing a 140 pounds of stuff. Now move about & try to work!PS. The S-4 is still at the bottom. The S-51 was finally raised after a terrific effort. The Squalus was later also raised. ... It took 50 years and a secret CIA project to create a ship that could grapple a sunken submarine and bring it to the surface. And even then, only in parts! (see: Project Azorian on Wikipedia dot com.)An Added Note: Definitions and Photos are at the end of the eBook. Use either Google, Bing, or Yahoo searches for photos and definitions. For photos & other info, search for "S-51 SS-162".

This is a very interesting chronicle of the Navy raising a submarine which went down in an "accident" with a freighter off the coast of the Atlantic in 1925. The sub was riding on the surface when the freighter hit it. It went down so fast, only three of the 36 members of the crew escaped. The author is the man who headed the operation to raise the sub. He was a Lieutenant at that time and retired as an Admiral. One thing would have made it better. It needed a glossary for all the Navy and ship terminology. Battan. Belay. Bilge. Those are just some of the Bs. However, it is not absolutely essential to understand every term or how every operation was performed to enjoy the story. Anyone with any knowledge of the US Navy or submarines would enjoy this book.Raising this sub -- mostly done in order to recover the men -- was a remarkable feat in 1925.An overview of the story of the sub can be found on Wikipedia. Just search for "USS S-51 (SS-162)" -- the "name" of the sub.

Very, very, very detailed information about every step of the recovery of the submarine. However, the reader might want to go on YouTube to watch two videos about the dive suits mentioned in this book. One video is from the 1950's and one is from some time in the 2000's or 2010's. The author of On The Bottom assumes the reader knows all about the dive suits and how they work and all about submarines. But there is no information as to why the captain of the freighter that hit the sub made a sharp right turn. The author mentions the cause of the collision, but nothing to explain the captain's actions. Also, the book just stops when the sub is brought to dry dock. No further discussion of the recovery of the 18 bodies inside. And keep in mind, the book was published in 1946.

I hesitated between a four and five. I went with the four because although it is a good slice of naval history and an interesting read there is a lot of naval terminology which keeps this reader looking in the glossary, and often times not finding term wanted. However, that being said it is a good read, a good slice of U.S. Navy history and captures the flavor of the times. And perhaps most importantly Ellesberg re-creates the dedication, even the heroics of the seamen involved both officer and enlisted. And typical of that time period no one is afraid to work beyond all expectations. That said I think I'll change the four to a five.

As an ex Navy 1st Class Diver I cannot emphise enough the courage these divers possessed. Page after page I expected to hear of a diver casualty. I was once sent down to rescue a diver that had a valve stuck open and over inflated suit and inside a tunnel. He made it but never dove again. These divers had nerves of steel and commitment lmuch like our special ops forces today. They make me feel like I was in the pee wee league even though some of my dives were at the 300 ft depth. This is a hard book to pt down once started. Heros!, Everyone of them.

This book is proof that Ned Ellsberg was both one of the 20th century's most brilliant salvagemen and an accomplished author. This is a blow by blow technical diary of the incredible salvage of the sunken submarine S-51 under the most harrowing conditions imaginable. Remarkably, despite the book's intense level of detail, it is riveting.Ellsberg's matter of fact delivery stands in stark contrast to the incredible heroics of the divers, and of the great skill of the seamen involved. He's laying out the facts. They speak for themselves, and if you have to pick your jaw up from the floor a few times, that's your problem, not his.

I was employed by Nathan B Smith who was a US Navy retired deep sea diver. In 1939, Smith told me that he, working for Commander Ellsberg burrowed his way under the S51,off Long Island to pull the lifting chains under the keel to salvage the submarine. Ellsberg's book names a Francis Smith as the one who did that. During my brief employment by Navy Contractor Nathan Smith on California's San Clemente Island, Smith pointed out the Northwest Harbor barracks flagpole where a ship's bell was hung to sound the time, that he had also salvaged that bell, inscribed with the name 'USS Bagaduce'. This memory led m to 'On The Bottom' which is a good read however, I wonder how I can learn if Nathan was telling the truth?

An excellent, first hand account of the salvage of SS 51. Although I wound up looking up many technical or naval terms that I was unfamiliar with, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Admiral Ellsberg's descriptive narrative had me right there on bottom with each harrowing dive. He described ingenuity that is not uncommon in Naval service, which allowed on site salvage to continue when it may well have been delayed days or weeks until proper parts were developed or supplied. This could be made into a great motion picture, showing uncommon valor and devotion to duty. They're all hero's in my book
