Neil Christopher is an educator, author, and filmmaker. He first moved to the North many years ago to help start a high school program in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. It was those students who first introduced Neil to the mythical inhabitants from Inuit traditional stories. The time spent in Resolute Bay changed the course of Neil’s life. Since that first experience in the Arctic, Nunavut has been the only place he has been able to call home. Neil has worked with many community members to record and preserve traditional Inuit stories. Together with his colleague, Louise Flaherty, and his brother, Danny Christopher, Neil started a small publishing company in Nunavut called Inhabit Media Inc., and has since been working to promote Northern stories and authors.

An absolutely wonderful book!!!! Jonathan Wright's illustrations are incredible as is the story. This book reflects an aspect of our modern culture that has been forgotten. Numerous Native cultures around the world have a very similar story / legends regarding the Little People. Maybe they were able to see and interact with something or someone our modern culture is unable to see. The book is great!

Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church, as well as one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. This booklet was one of five sermons on the “Four Last Things” (Death, Judgment, Hell, and Heaven) delivered at Louvain University in 1574, when Bellarmine was only 32 years old.He states early in the sermon, “all Christians have been persuaded that the Almighty and most Excellent God has decreed by an irrevocable sentence that he who departs this life guilty of having violated God’s law is bound over as a convict to eternal chains and is tortured without end by unspeakable torments. Nevertheless, we see daily that many people, under no compulsion… offend God with their own initiative, free will and pleasure of mind… What shall we say is the cause of this? … there seem to me to be three principal causes of this: lack of consideration, ignorance and self-love…” (Pg. 2-3)He argues, “It we truly understood the gravity of the fault, we would scarcely entertain any doubt as to the bitterness of the penalty… how great is the gravity of sin?... it is so immense that our minds can in no way grasp it… For if it be fitting to measure the magnitude of an offense by the dignity and nobility of him who is offended, then certainly sin, which wound an infinite dignity and nobility, will be an immense and infinite evil.” (Pg. 4)He observes, “What shall we say about the damned angels? Was not the Prince of Devils once the Prince of Angels?... If, therefore, the greatest, wisest and most eminent of all the angels was thrust out of Heaven for a single sin and hurled into the Abyss, how comes it that we, who cling to the slime of innumerable sins, flatter ourselves concerning the benevolence and kindness of God?” (Pg. 9-10)He points out, “I hear someone raising his voice in objection and saying: ‘Has anyone ever come back from Hell to affirm that these things are true?’ O foolish question!... if some people were to come back from Hell, all could hope that they will someday do likewise. Since, then, no one ever does return, it is a form of proof that Hell is so deep a pit that no one can rise out of it.” (Pg. 11)He explains, “the eyes of the damned shall never again perceive any beautiful sight, nor their ears any sweet singing, nor their sense of taste any joyful savor, nor their sense of touch any gentle thing. For once a person has been excluded from the consortium of God, he is plunged once and for all into the ocean of all woes and calamities without any hope of escape.” (Pg 22) Later, he adds, “there shall arise in the very wills of sinners an implacable hatred against God… They shall have no further hope of recovering salvation. They shall know of a certainty that never can they return to the grace of God, that never shall their tortures be ended or mitigated… they shall rage like rabid dogs, and never shall they cease from barkings, blasphemies and contumely… They shall curse God because He is not continuously killing them, yet never allowing them to die.” (Pg. 27)He states, “in Hell the most ferocious pain shall at one and the same time be borne in the breast, the kidneys and in every joint, never center, marrow, sense and faculty of the body.” (Pg. 30) He notes, “If here in our world devils can claim for themselves such power over us… what, I ask you, shall they do in their own territory, where they fear neither exorcisms, nor holy water, nor the merits and prayers of the saints?” (Pg. 32)He adds, “what a cross shall the eyes of the damned suffer when they see their wives, parents and children in the same torments!... There, with weighty grief, shall children see their parents and parents their children, husbands their wives and wives their husbands… bearing them company in the tortures of Hell!” (Pg. 33)He concludes, “if the mere thought of this eternity terrifies us, what shall it be not to contemplate, but actually to dwell amid eternal punishments? To be tortured without end is a thing so horrendous that if it feel to the lot of but one of the children of Adam to be struck with such a punishment, we would all have reason to fear and tremble… If we do not believe these things, where is our faith?” (Pg. 45)Not exactly “light summer reading,” this booklet is a frank and clear presentation of Bellarmine’s understanding of eternal torment.

Scary! Must read once a year.

This was good. an easy read. A good taste of Bellarmine.

- Why I Read This BookI wanted to know more about the Church teachings on Hell, as well as to read something by the great Doctor of the Church St. Bellarmine.- PositivesThis book rather poetically describes why people sin, why sin deserves punishment, and what the punishments of hell are (the worst are not physical, but the torture of knowing that one's own actions deprived one of God forever). I read this pamphlet a couple years ago and then read it again.- Negatives? This pamphlet is a sermon: my regret is that more of Bellarmine's sermons are not available in English.- Final ThoughtsThe pamphlet What Will Hell Be Like? is also good. I strongly recommend End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life.

excellent!

An excellent tool for defeating the common arguments against the existence of Hell. St. Robert Bellarmine was a brilliant man. The sermon is a little longer than one might expect, but I was able to read it in a little less than an hour, with full comprehension. I highly recommend this work. It is so good that I even gave a copy to one of my professors.

DOOD

The pamphlet Hell and its Torments is an excellent sermon on hell delivered by St. Robert Bellarmine (a Doctor of the Church) at Louvain University in the late sixteenth century as part of a series on the Four Last Things. Some, Bellarmine says, seemingly anticipating and refuting the modern position of Hans ur von Balthasar, “had thought that all men, whether Christian, Jew, or pagan, are to be saved at the Last Judgment, either through their own merits or the advocacy and suffrage of others. … What else but self-love gave all these people such a misdirected sense of compassion and caused them to take such a paltry view of the tortures of Hell?”Bellarmine describes the penalties of unrepentant mortal sin – loss of beatitude and torture and torment. The “heavier” penalty is the loss of happiness, the Highest Good. The lesser is the torture, both of the body and the soul. His treatment of the torments of hell is not as graphic as that of Dante in the Inferno. The damned will suffer in the soul in thought, memory, intelligence, and will. “[T]he sorrow which arises from the loss of the highest good, and which torments the faculties of the inner soul, is mighty and indescribable.”Bellarmine’s treatment of the bodily punishments is the most graphic portion of the sermon, but like the other parts, it is designed to bring the sinner to repentance and to instill a desire to avoid hell. “My dear people, it would assuredly be an excellent thing if we could comprehend but a little the eternity of punishment. For this thought alone would like a bridle restrain all our lusts and moderate our lives, so that we would all seem to be not only Christians, but most holy monks and anchorites!”

#149,219 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Well I have to join the chorus of dissension that other reviewers have raised here. If you have read Imajica, The Great and Secret Show and Weaveworld and are expecting anything resembling those excellent books, be prepared for a let down. It seems Barker's horror hiatus left him without the imagination he once wove throughout his works. The characters here are so thinly written and the scenery so blandly described that when reading the book you will eventually give up trying to actually visualize the story and just read it to finish it and be done with the thing. My impression of the quality of writing is that a seventeen year old aspiring author stole Barker's characters and attempted to finish this strand of his story. It reads absolutely nothing like the old Barker we all loved so much. The over the top gore and guts are still there but you don’t cringe anymore because the tension is missing in this gospel. The Pinhead character who fills the antagonist role talks like a bored off duty policeman and wields godly powers such that he can kill with origami swans and fart gas - not a joke people, you may want to read it just to laugh at the absurd plot gaffs. You get no sense of dread or fear from old nail face as he feels like a cardboard tiger 100% of the time even as he turns people and demons into chop suey. I will not get into the plot but suffice it to say, his motivations and reasoning fall short of anything remotely meaningful. It's like Barker took Joe Schmo off the street and said act like you can kill anyone and here wear all these nails on your face and this freaky leather sex outfit and don’t forget your favorite pet chain his name is Fishhook.Harry D'Amour barely shows up to the party in his role as The Guy Who Inexplicably Wins Everything and he brings with him a dreadfully boring self loathing like before, but apparently he lost any interesting qualities in the time since we last saw him. He comes off as a whiny wuss bag who spends more time complaining about his itchy tattoos then he does being concerned with oh I don’t know say an impending apocalypse? Then there are the other Avengers who include Tall Young Tattoo Guy whose sole power is he can produce a carpet full of assorted knives in addition to also having itchy tattoos (so he is one up on Harry). He frequently travels with his sidekick Angry Young Tattoo Chick whose power is being forgotten about by the reader. Don’t forget Short Old Guy who has prophetic dreams about important tasks he must fulfill like loitering in certain areas and stabbing Young Tattoo Chick. Finally Old Blind Woman who can talk to dead people and predict phone calls fills out the team. The story itself is actually not that bad though it’s a ghost of Barker’s former achievements, once you get over the weak and non existent characters you can see glimpses of what makes him a brilliant author. However, these are few and far between so if you have read all his books and liked most of them you probably should read this because it closes a major story line for Barker fans. Just expect to be let down somewhat if you are looking for the same from this book as you got in the past from him.

Remember when Pinhead spoke with the voice of a child, and there were jewels on the nails embedded in his face and head? Clive Barker seems to have forsaken his own creations in this eulogy for the Hellraiser series. This Pinhead is no elegant servant of Hell, this Pinhead is pure Hollywood. This is the Pinhead of one good movie and a string of horrible ones. He's vain, he's easily frustrated, he lets his temper and ambitions rule him, he bumbles. And the storyline bumbles along behind him and Harry D'Amour. Unlike the majority of Barker's other books, The Scarlet Gospels lacked beauty and eloquence, and doubled down on crudity, gross-outs and showed more than it told.

Sadly disappointing, but there were some cool environments and lore dealing with Hell and some other dark stuff. Unfortunately, it gets pretty rushed toward the end and a lot of the writing feels like someone trying to be Clive Barker, not actually Clive Barker himself. The first chapter is solid, I wouldn't say great, but definitely entertaining and creepy. From then on out, it keeps getting disappointing. There is an uplift in the middle of the book involving Hell, its landscape, some lore, the Order of the Gash and everything else, but it quickly falls apart too.The ending may be the worst. It's very poorly written, rushed and full of bad jokes and poor character dialogue. There's a bit of an epilogue that's okay, but the conclusion to Harry's story and his pals is cringe.

Other reviewers have done a good job of outlining the plot of the book, so I won't focus on that. For some time now, Barker has been saying that "The Scarlet Gospels" is a continuation of the original Books of Blood story "The Hellbound Heart." It isn't, though, in any way. The original story and the first two films looked at the use of pain and pleasure to achieve a transcendence of sorts, similar to the experiences of many BDSM and body modification practitioners. Mr. Barker has even stated on more than one occasion that he wrote the original story after spending time visiting BDSM clubs in the U.S. That was an intriguing thing to explore in a horror story (and movies) at the time, when BDSM was not as well understood by the general public. In the original short story, he stressed that the Cenobites had done all of their body modifications to themselves. The first Hellraiser movie was a bit different, but it still stressed the tension between hidden desires and general conceptions of morality. The second film (written and directed by others) introduced the idea of "Hell" and "Leviathan," but still held to the overall theme of forbidden desires. The subsequent movies were mostly just slasher-style flicks, unfortunately. The Epic anthology line of comics were continuations and extensions of the second movie, but did a great job (for the most part) of sticking to the themes and feel of the original short story. Subsequent series by other publishers have been a mixed bag and have strayed off in all sorts of directions. For me, the best work in the mythology has been in the original short story, the Epic line of comics, and the first two movies. I know that others tend to like the more monster/slasher feel of the other movies and/or the other comic lines. To each his own.Having said all that, "The Scarlet Gospels" doesn't fall into any of the pre-established continuities or themes in any way, shape, or form. Pinhead's character is nothing like anything shown in any other Hellraiser stories (in print or on film). He doesn't seek transcendence, and is not really a sadomasochist per se. He's just a murdering sadist. He has been reduced to a simple power-hungry demon in a relatively tame, boring Christian Hell. He isn't witty, clever, or thoughtful, and really isn't a very compelling character at all. There is no point in having Harry D'Amour in the story. He and the other "Harrowers" (a reference to a group in a couple of the comics lines) spend the whole book spouting sarcastic one-liners in increasingly unbelievable situations. As others have noted, the dialogue strongly resembles what you might find in an old episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There is nothing particularly horrific or scary to it.I have read just about every book and short story Clive Barker has written, and have been a fan since the Books of Blood first came out. This book is his worst, by a long shot. The writing level, plotting, characterization, etc. is far, far below his capability, and (to be honest) doesn't even have the same "voice" that characterizes the rest of his fiction. As a few other reviewers have said, it almost reads like he gave an outline to a ghostwriter and signed his name to it. Though I doubt that's what happened, I really can't fathom how he pumped out such an inferior book, even when you take into account the obvious heavy-editing it took to get it below it's original 1,000+ page count."The Scarlet Gospels" really comes across as a book that was written under duress by an author who didn't want to revisit any of it and had no idea of where to go with an idea he had been avoiding for a decade. That's a real shame, too, because Barker is a very talented storyteller and writer.

So, first my critical thoughts and then my personal thoughts:The formatting of this book is gorgeous. The way the poems are structured on the page tell the story and convey the mood of a scene just as effectively as the words. The story is conveyed in a deftly succinct, but rich and moving way. The minimal approach to storytelling really makes the character come alive in your mind. I felt at home in Xio’s head, comfortable and able to understand her heart through the language And pacing Acevedo utilizes like a great chef utilizes familiar but perfectly balanced flavor profiles. If you enjoy great writing and a unique approach to storytelling, you will love this book.As for my personal experience with The Poet X?Poetry has always felt like nourishment to my soul, but I’ve never felt it pierce so deeply and so directly into my heart as this book and its narrative poetry managed to do. As a Latin blooded teenager, I felt all wrong in my own body compared to my white friends, and I related to Xio’s discomfort in a lot of ways. While she became tough, I became invisible. My story isn’t like hers, except that I too found comfort in words and writing. I found enough connection to move me to tears by the end of this beautiful, heartfelt story about finding your words. I love this book. It has become an instant favorite. Beautiful and moving and earnest doesn’t even begin to cover it. Anyone who has latinx roots, has ever been a teenage girl, has ever struggled to find our voice, or who has a compassionate, empathetic heart should read this book.

A friend of mine had been telling me about this book for months and it just released so I had to get a copy for my daughter. I'm into the YA genre so I just had to read it for myself first. What I loved most is the poetry form style in which Ms. Acevedo tells the story of teen Xiomara Batista who is trying to navigate a complex life with New York City as the backdrop. It's a very quick yet powerful read but I got so much out of her story in those 357 pages (not every page is filled to the bottom so it goes quickly). Of course as a mother, I was concerned about certain themes being too mature for my daughter but we talked through it as she read it. It was so beautifully done and cannot wait to read whatever else Ms. Acevedo has in store.

This is my favorite book of 2018, so far.The power behind the lines in this book is undeniable. I felt like tiny hammers were pinging the words into my heart. I read some pages two, three, four...seven times because they were so eloquent, heavy and impactful. Here’s a favorite stanza from page 340:“That love can be a band:tears if you pull it too hard, but also flexible enoughto stretch around the most chaotic mass.”Mami and Xiomara’s relationship is so raw and intense, I felt like I was flinching during so many of their scenes together. So many of the characters complement Xiomara so well...Ms. Galiano, Twin, Caridad, Aman, Father Sean...This book captures the horrible, painful and metamorphic experience of growing up and magnifies it all with a layer of cultural norms and immigrant narratives. Holy cow. This is the full package.

17202933BookBlerd's review May 09, 2018 · editit was amazingbookshelves: favoritesI've read about a dozen novels in verse since I was a teen. If I could, I'd go back in time and give my teen self this book. This book is about a Latinx teen girl named Xiomara as she learns to use poetry to cope with questioning her mother's religion & strictness as well as her coming of age. Ms. Acevedo's verses are so amazing that I found myself bookmarking pages or verses that stood out to me. As a poet, I could tell that the author honed her craft well. Not only were the poems powerful, but the story they told was relatable. Xiomara's experience with religious questioning, a strict mother, sexual harassment from her peers, and poetry were things that made me cheer & ache for her. It's been a few years since I last read a verse novel, but this is definitely a new favorite. I loved this as both a reader & a poet and I will be using this book to fuel my own poetry in the future.

The Poet X is Elizabeth Acevedo’s extraordinary debut novel that speaks from the depths of the beauty and power of the written and spoken word. It is a novel in verse, told in three parts about Xiomara Batista, a 15-year old girl hailing from Harlem.Xiomara (meaning “One who is ready for war”) is the daughter of two old school Dominican parents. She is often misunderstood and unheard in a home where her mom’s voice rings loudest, casting judgement and laying down the law in the name of religion. With a father who is at once present and absent; there but…”gone as anybody.”She keeps these notebooks, at least one of which was gifted to her by her brother who’s long believed in Xiomara and has been a source of quiet strength and encouragement. She fills her notebooks with inspirational quotes and her thoughts of which, every now and then she dresses “in the clothing of a poem.”A flyer hanging in the hallway at school catches Xiomara’s attention, calling out to all poets, rappers, and writers for a Spoken Word Poetry Club. Will she have what it takes? Can she speak up and be seen? Will she find her voice? The cover is alluring and powerful and colorfully portrays the defining words that are etched into Xiomara’s very being. Those words hidden inside that affirm her and those that are freeing, as well as those that are vying to confine. She is Xiomara, listen to her voice. If you were looking for that book that you wish you’d read as a teenager, this is it. Now as a 40-year-old woman I am thankful for an honest, relevant read. This is one I can give to my daughters. It leaves me brimming with hope for the ways it will speak to its reader. Hats off to Elizabeth Acevedo for this exceptional debut.
