Some great stories here and some surprising relationships of spiritual practices/influences. This is largely a collection of personal essays so the takeaway for me is really just having the privilege to hear very personal stories of spiritual journeys, mostly told by Unitarian ministers. I say privilege because a free and open search for truth and meaning isn't always pretty or comfortable and these shard stories talk about those journeys with humility and honesty.

This book offers UU members insight to the Buddhist practice within the congregation. For Buddhists seeking to explore the Dharma in action, the benefits for becoming a UU member are well articulated.

A great book - poorly formatted as an ebook for the price though. Lots of spacing and font- conversion errors. When will Kindle start enforcing higher standards for epublication format? Seems like we have no recourse when this happens.

This book was both a delightful read and an eye-opener. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to actually use Buddhist practices to deepen or broaden Christian or Humanist practices, this book is for you. Each chapter is a short essay by a different person who has done just that, mostly Unitarian Universalist ministers of the last half century. As a UU who has read about Zen Buddhism and seen Theravada Buddhism first hand (my first wife was from northeast Thailand), I've always been curious about Buddhism, admiring its humility, its sense of inclusion, and devotion to the basic human condition. But I had no idea that the Buddhism popularized by Alan Watts and D.T. Suzuki in American was actually heavily influenced by Unitarianism, which made its way to Japan in the latter half of the 19th century. This amazing story - the stuff of a good movie - begins with the 1841 shipwreck of five Japanese fisherman, their rescue by an American ship, and the journey of one of them, Nakahama Manjiro, who eventually returns to Japan, steeped in Unitarianism, avoiding the execution that was the lot of Catholic missionaries, by his willingness to step on an image of the Virgin Mary. Most of the rest of the book is about how individual UUs developed practices of Buddhist meditation and mindfulness under the guidance of mentors or masters from different Buddhist traditions. This has generally worked well when individuals have engaged in regular Buddhist retreats and local support groups, but it has been more difficult to fit Buddhist practices into the format of traditional Protestant church services. Moreover, the chapter by a Chinese Buddhist remarks that these demanding and individualistic American Buddhist practices are only a small part of the Buddhism, such as Pure Land Buddhism, practiced by most Asians. In the popular Asian tradition, temples are always open for people to receive blessings and earn merit by coming in with alms for the monks, or offerings for various deities or ancestors, or to participate in chantings or celebrations, or to consult with the monks, or to help out with various tasks, etc.For example, my first wife often took offerings to Nahng Torwahnee, the earth goddess from a pre-Buddhist spirit tradition, and was a regular helper at the Thai Wat. My youngest daughter recently had a UU wedding in one location, then three wedding ceremonies (Buddhist, Lao, and Thai) in one day at the Wat, with the monks leading the Buddhist ceremony in Pali, while elders led the Lao and Thai ceremonies. I noted that Nahng Torwahnee was invoked in the Lao ceremony, which included the blessing of tying strings around the wrist. Such diverse and inclusive Buddhist traditions will probably be reserved for ethnic groups, along with the institution of the Wat, despite the need for more practices of generosity, devotion, and community building in UU circles. Instead the trend, as documented in this book, is toward UU influenced philosophical and meditative practices from Buddhism gradually becoming part of mainstream spiritual practices under the leadership of ministers and others who are developing new spiritual communities. This book may even inspire you to join this movement.

This is a really important book. However, the list price is $14 and it is available from the UUA Bookstore, online. Here's what I said about the book elsewhere:"This book is more than a celebration of the diversity of Buddhism within Unitarian Universalism. It celebrates diverse and conflicting views of the roles that Buddhist practices can and should play in congregational life and worship. If you are thinking about where we might go, read this book."Shame on the seller for trying to sell this book for five times the current price from the publisher! And shame on Amazon for refusing to pull the plug on this seller.Robert Ertman

Catherine Carrigan's book, What is Healing? Awaken Your Intuitive Power for Health and Happiness, is informative, profoundly inspiring, and empowering. Just to read it feels like beginning a healing process--one that includes both greater confidence and self-responsibility. The book is written with rare clarity and depth, and has an unconditionally loving, personal, and professional tone all at the same time. What is Healing? is very accessible, too, with many examples from Ms. Carrigan's own life included in the 84 short chapters that neatly flow into one another. Each is preceded by a wonderful quote, like this one from Eileen Caddy on page 17:"Cease trying to work everything out in your minds. It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let your whole life be Revelation."Ms. Carrigan is a "professional health intuitive and holistic healer" who has had her own formidable healing journey. This gives her words an authenticity that can only come from lived experience, and there is both great depth and breadth to her shared insights. She says: "My goal in this book is to teach you how to access unconditional love in your life and, in so doing, open up your intuition--available to you so long as you learn how to love deeply and with your whole heart" (page 16). I have been reading about health, healing, and spirituality for more than 40 years, and I haven't found another book that speaks of this connection, nor so effectively describes and models what it is to be loving with oneself and others. Certainly this is the foundation not only for healing, but for living a peaceful, joyful, and fulfilling life. For anyone seeking healing for themselves, or for practitioners of the healing arts, I'd recommend What is Healing? as a terrific resource. It provides easily-grasped tools for healing on the deepest level, greater understanding of what we are as beings, and guidance toward unconditional love of self and for all that is.May this book bring all its readers the healing they need and want, and more!Steve Schechter

What is healing? This book is written by a healer who works with several clients. Catherine Carrigan teaches us how to care for our sacred souls. Carrigan approaches healing of the soul and body as a holistic effort reminding us that we are connected to one another and to our surroundings. When something is out of sync or not functioning to its highest level, we need to take a look within and see what may be blocking our normal energy flow. She graciously reminds us to keep our chakras open by facing life’s hard issues such as grief or loss. She shows how unconditional love and intuitive listening can help us repair and return to wholeness. This book is filtered with great wisdom and quotes from timeless thinkers and can be referred to over and over for guidance.

I have just read "What is Healing?" written by Catherine Carrigan, practitioner in whole body healing that embraces mental, psychological, emotional and physical elements of the whole person. The author's approach to this procedure is amazing. She narrates from a very personal level revealing events from her own life that led her to becoming a qualified practitioner. The grammar and syntax are simple, straightforward and very legible. Her style of writing will appeal to anyone who can read. Her format is very attractive. The reader can read any chapter as a separate nugget, or, follow sequentially from Chapter 1 to the conclusion of the book. She provides quality information that every person should be aware of and incorporating into their own lives. This is not a textbook, yet it contains age old information that would be considered textbook earned. The author is a very beautiful writer and any reader will be uplifted by its contents.

I totally loved this book. Catherine's stories are wonderful to read. The book is packed full of information and is very easy to understand. I'm sure I will refer back to it a lot. I would definitely recommend it!

Loved this book. Wonderful on Audible; so much so that I purchased the hard copy in order to refer to the wonderful reference sections. Very useful!

I have read What is Healing and was shocked at how much I have learned from it. It is a MUST READ. She should be thanked over and over again for giving such a simply put book to the world that is full of true knowledge not just big words. I have read numerous books about healing and holistic health but never a book that plainly stated everything so perfectly.Again, a must read for those who really want to dive into Healing.

Catherine is a genius. She makes the reader think "out of the box" and beyond. I enjoyed the way she follows her statements and beliefs either with examples or research. She can back up how she feels or sees things in life with true stories and examples of great human courage.I learned a lot from Catherine's book and will have to read it again so I can learn more!

The Gospel of Trees: A Memoir, by Apricot Irving

Review

"Finely crafted...Irving moves seamlessly between the wide-eyed perspective of the child and the critical gaze of the adult, creating a tale as beautiful as it is discomfiting." (The New Yorker)"The daughter of a dedicated missionary, Irving grew up in Haiti, where she learned both the power and the risks of working to improve the world--and the toll it can take on a family. An eye-opening memoir."   (People)"Apricot Irving’s honest memoir highlights the good, the bad and the ugly of missionary life, challenging traditional “white savior” narratives." (Paste Magazine)“Lush, emotional debut...A beautiful memoir that shows how a family altered by its own ambitious philanthropy might ultimately find hope in their faith and love for each other, and for Haiti.” (Publisher’s Weekly (starred review))“With insight and admirable even-handedness, Irving shows the complex forces at play in both the story of Haiti’s cycle of poverty and the more personal dynamics at play in her family as they struggle mightily to do God’s work.” (Booklist)"Provide[s] a useful view of the inherent ethical and moral ambiguities of well-meaning but sometimes ineffective charitable interventions in Haiti." (Library Journal)"A timely and often insightful perspective on modern-day Haiti." (Kirkus Reviews)“Saving souls and saving Haiti, one tree at a time: this is the charge of the Anderson family when it arrives in Haiti in 1981. They are "the sent ones," Baptist missionaries led by a workaholic agronomist father who walks the hills declaiming Bible verses about trees in Haitian Kreyol. If a memoir's worth lies in the truths it's willing to tell, then The Gospel of Trees is the most worthwhile of memoirs, an unflinching and gorgeously written account of a young girl's coming of age in a difficult family, in one of the world's most difficult places. How do we survive our own lives? "Such endeavors only look easy from a distance," writes Apricot Irving, née Anderson, apropos of planting trees, though of course it's about so much more than those trees. Her story hits hard, and sticks, as only the very best stories do.” (Ben Fountain, New York Times bestselling author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk)“An engaging, detailed, nuanced and penetrating look at the seldom-studied effects of the do-gooders on the countries, communities, families they seek to improve. Neither sugar-coated, nor cynical, Apricot Irving has mastered the most difficult aspect of this kind of memoir: the just-right tone of compassion and hard-earned hope. Hers is a valuable lived experience which she reports in lucid and lively writing. We learn not just about Haiti, but about families, about the human heart. A family memoir, a coming of age story, an exploration of a country greatly loved and little understood. A cautionary tale for all those setting out to do good, may this gospel be read as the good news it is—a moral compass and a must read for all of us who struggle with how to create a better world.” (Julia Alvarez, author of numerous novels, including How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies, and Saving the World, as well as the memoir, A Wedding in Haiti)“A beautiful exploration of hope and hubris. Irving shows us the many entanglements among our relationships with the land, other cultures, and the mysteries of our own families.” (David George Haskell, author of The Songs of Trees and Pulitzer Prize finalist The Forest Unseen)

Amazing. This book stares directly in the face of difficult choices and finds beauty. She doesn't shy away from looking for truth and refuses to take the easy path of demonizing the people we don't agree with. She makes you think about what that desire to "save the the world" costs yourself, your family and the people you are trying to save while not letting go of our need to care deeply about each other and the Earth. An amazing read and one that made me sorry to turn the last page.

A very fascinating book to read, a page-turner that I finished in 2 days. It doesn't provide a magic answer to helping the country, but provides a compelling story that makes you think. It's the kind of book (or movie) that when you finish it, you want to go out for coffee with friends to discuss it and try to wrestle with the tough problems to solve.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Having been to Haiti multiple times on mission trips, I have learned a few things about Haiti. I've also grown to love the people of Haiti and the country. This book taught me so much about Haiti. It also taught me about the struggles and challenges of being a missionary in Haiti. It is also a story about family and the relationships of people in this particular family and the challenges that they met. The author's father grew to love Haiti and to pass that on to his children and others. Haiti is not a simple country. It is very complex. This book helped me understand a little bit about the relationships of people within Haiti as well as the struggles of people who try to "help" Haiti. Haiti is a beautiful country with beautiful people. Many people just see it as a country in need but it is so much more. This book helps to share that thought. It may not always be an easy book to read as it may challenge your perceptions but it may help you grow.

Apricot paints the complexity of Haiti, mission work, adolescence, family, race, culture, history and more with bold, fluid strokes and subtle shades that challenge both the intellect and emotions. Her daring vulnerability provides the kind of beautiful and at times uncomfortable honesty that gives life to a collection of stories and makes them truly a memoir. Though I grew up with Apricot and am familiar with nearly all of the people, places, and major events mentioned in this book, I have learned so much by viewing them again from her perspective. This is one of the only books that I've read all the way through, then started back at the beginning and read again. There's a lot to enjoy and a lot to chew on.

Loved this book! Several times I went back to re-read a sentence, just to enjoy the beautiful flow of the words. The drama within this family is compelling. How will they manage to hold their family together? Haiti presents such beauty and deep challenges. Congratulations to A.Irving...a Great Read!

Compelling story that was thought provoking, insightful and grappled some of life's most difficult questions. Rare insight into the messy lives of family relationships, poverty and those who dedicate their lives to helping others. Many deep truths to be discovered in the Gospel of Trees and it deserves to be discussed throughly with a book group or with someone else that you love.

This moving and carefully constructed tapestry is worthy of any reader's inclusion. Ms. Irving's beautifully thoughtful descriptive skills reminds one of Barbara Kingsolver's works...particularly The Poisonwood Bible.

A really fantastic book that sticks with you long after you have finished reading it. The author intertwines her personal history with her family's missionary work in Haiti. We tend to think that we can come up with solutions to every problem, but what if no solution exists. Do we keep moving forward? Do we keep making progress? Or do we give up? And how does this frustration about this situation rear up in other places in our lives?

From the Inside Flap

The establishment of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a pioneering international event. Never had any country sought to move forward from despotism to democracy both by exposing the atrocities committed in the past and achieving reconciliation with its former oppressors. At the center of this unprecedented attempt at healing a nation has been Archbishop Desmond Tutu, whom President Nelson Mandela named as Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. With the final report of the Commission just published, Archbishop Tutu offers his reflections on the profound wisdom he has gained by helping usher South Africa through this painful experience. In No Future Without Forgiveness, Tutu argues that true reconciliation cannot be achieved by denying the past. But nor is it easy to reconcile when a nation "looks the beast in the eye." Rather than repeat platitudes about forgiveness, he presents a bold spirituality that recognizes the horrors people can inflict upon one another, and yet retains a sense of idealism about reconciliation. With a clarity of pitch born out of decades of experience, Tutu shows readers how to move forward with honesty and compassion to build a newer and more humane world.

Born in South African on October 7, 1931, Desmond Tutu grew up during a time of great pain and chaos. Despite growing up in a country that actively discriminated against him due to the color of his skin, Tutu was able join the Anglican clergy and graduate from college. Eventually he was elected as Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, where he was able to help guide the country through the transition into democracy. Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 along with many other awards over the years for his defense of human rights. In 1995, a year after the apartheid had ended, Desmond Tutu was appointed as chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) by President Nelson Mandela. This commission had the mandate to "provide as complete a picture as possible of the gross human rights violations that happened" (page 91) between 1960 and 1994. As one could image this was a daunting task for a variety of reason, not the least of that the commission only had two years to complete the task. Tutu's book "No Future Without Forgiveness", published in 1999, is a look back over the years of the commission, attempting to explain some of their actions as well as to promote the power of forgiveness in breaking the cycle of violence. To this end, Tutu starts off the book with a few chapters exploring the cultural background of South Africa during the apartheid years. Special attention was given to the emotions and worldview of the black, colored and Indian members of South Africa sociality as their voices have normally been squelched. After lying the ground work, Tutu goes on to explains why and how South Africa decided upon launching the TRC in the first place. For example, why did the newly elected black African government choose to offer amnesty instead of pursuing criminal charges like in Nuremberg (War World II's war criminal court)?Following this discourse on why the TRC method was chosen, Tutu embarks on one of the best sections of the entire book. Namely, he answers the question of justice in light of the amnesty being offered: "Are the miscreants not going virtually scot-fee, since all they must do is give a full amount of all the materials facts relating to the offense?" (page 50). Drawing on both his heritage as an African and his theological training as a clergy member, Tutu weaves an agreement showing how true justice is more than just punishing someone for the wrong they committed. It is about "ubuntu", the "healing of breaches, the redress of imbalances, the restoration of broken relationships, a seeking to rehabilitate both the victims and the perpetrator, who should be given the opportunity to be reintegrated into the community he has injured by his offense" (page 55).After explaining the why's and how's of the TRC, Tutu spends most of the book telling the stories of the commission. Stories about some of the most horrible human rights crimes in world; crimes committed across a nation with the simple goal of making one racial group more powerful and rich than all the others. In an interesting twist, these shocking stories serve as a turning point in the book as they are coupled with some of the most powerful stories of forgiveness known to history. Fathers who forgive the men who tortured murdered their children; families who forgave those who killed and burned their loved ones while holding party next to the burning corpse. The combined natures of these stories serve to both explain the situation more fully as well as to make the reader's personal grudges seem petty and dumb.To that end, Tutu spends the last chapter elaborating on the concept of forgiveness and the freedom that comes from forgiveness. His hope is that people will grasp the power of forgiveness and apply it both to their private lives and in their society. As he states on page 279, "true forgiveness deals with the past, all of the past, to make the future possible...we have to accept that what we do we do for generation past, present, and yet to come. That is what makes a community a community or a people a people - for better or worse."In conclusion, Desmond Tutu's book "No Future Without Forgiveness" is a great exploration into the concept of forgiveness while bring to light some of the why's and how's of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Tutu does a great job a highlighting both the successes and failures of the TRC while keeping the overall message consistent. It is definitely a book to be read throughout the world, especially within the church as it helps put feet to Jesus' commandment to love and bless one's enemies (Matthew 5:44 and Luke 6:27-28).

This book is Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu's personal account of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa. The title is a succinct summary of his vision. Apart from stressing the importance of reconciliation, the author also provides a detailed narration of the planning, operation and dynamics of the Commission as well his experience between 1996 to 1998. An inspiring work and an important primary material for South African history.

South Africa is such an incredible country, a beautiful country and beautiful peoples meant to be a blessing to all of its people, to the continent of Africa and to the world. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has written a remarkable story of the impact of apartheid upon its people. Nelson Mandela wrote on the back cover, "The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of South AFrica has put the spotlight on all of us...In its hearings Desmond Tutu has conveyed our common pain and sorrow, our hope and confidence in the future."This is also the story of the most incredible free elections that the world has witnessed and how South Africa avoided a much anticipated bloodshed. With so many other countries that have looked evil in the face in their history and have had much different results than South Africa. Why is that? This book gives the reader the reasons why this process succeeded.Archbishop Tutu was surprised as a pastor and a man of faith to be asked to chair this committee with so many lawyers, parliamentarians, judges, health care workers and people of other faiths who could have capably led this commission. He also was about to retire and looking forward to it. One can easily see on page 49-50 why lawyers and people who understand government were needed when the law was passed establishing the TRC that the following conditions were allowed for amnesty:1. The act for which amnesty was required should have happened between 1960, the year of the Sharpeville massacre, and 1994, when President Mandela was inaugurated as the first democratically elected South African head of state.2. The act must have been politically motivated. Perpetrators did not qualify for amnesty if they killed for personal greed, but they did qualify if they committed the act in response to an order by, or on behalf of, a political organization, such as the former apartheid state and its satellite Bantustan homelands, or a recognized liberation movement such as the ANC or PAC.3. The applicant had to make a full disclosure of all the relevant facts relating to the offense for which amnesty was being sought.4. The rubric of proportionality had to be observed-- that the means were proportional to the objective. If those conditions were met, said the law, then amnesty "shall be granted."The Commission dealt with issues of remorse, impunity and justice amongst a very diverse group of people as well as compensation and related issues. President Mandela must have seen something different in appointing a pastor and Archbishop as the Chair that this was indeed going to be a spiritual process rather than merely political. Dealing with issues such as forgiveness, reconciliation and reparation were not normal discussion and decision making in the halls of government.Faith informed the Commissions discussions and particularly the Christian faith. I was deeply impressed with Desmond Tutu, how practical he is, how articulate he is and how his faith informs all that he does. An example on page 82/83- " It was a relief as the Commission to discover that we were all really children of Adam and Eve. When God accosted Adam and remonstrated with him about contravening the order God had given about not eating a certain fruit, Adam had been less than forthcoming in accepting responsibility for that disobedience. No, he shifted the blame to Eve, and when God turned to Eve, she too had taken a leaf from her husband;s book (not the leaf with which she tried to ineffectually to hide her nakedness) and tried to pass the buck. We are not sure how the serpent responded to the blame being pushed on it. So we should have thus not not have been surprised at how reluctant most people were to acknowledge their responsibility for atrocities done under apartheid. They were just being the descendants of their forebears and behaving true to form in being in the denial mode or blaming everyone and everything except themselves.""So frequently we in the commission were quite appalled at the depth of depravity to which human beings could sink and we would, most of us, say that those who committed such dastardly deeds were monsters because the deeds were monstrous. But theology prevents us from doing this. Theology reminded me that, however diabolical the act, it did not turn the perpetrator into a demon. We had to distinguish between the deed and the perpetrator, between the sinner and the sin, to hate and condemn the sin while being filled with compassion for the sinner... theology said they still, despite the awfulness of their deeds, remained children of God with the capacity to repent, to be able to change."This is really a book about forgiveness and reconciliation for awful things done to fellow human beings. It is a book about the scandal of love and grace given to people in the example of Jesus. It is a story of people just being able and encouraged to tell their awful stories of evil done to them, their loved ones and their neighbors. It is a story of how within each of us is the capacity for this same kind of evil. It is also the story of people who have suffered so much, instead of lusting for revenge, they had this extraordinary willingness to forgive. I was deeply moved by this book and I think you will be as well.

I've been involved in machine learning as a researcher / practitioner for 5 years, but used R for most of it and was originally reluctant to move to Python (learning pandas, numpy, scipy, and scikit-learn is an intimidating hill to climb when you're already so comfortable in R).I got this book for the deep learning portion (about half of the overall book length), and was shocked at the clarity of the conceptual explanations and code implementations. I've read many extensive explanations of important neural network architectures (FFNs, CNNs, RNNs, ...) and none of them were this clear and intuitive. Within 5 days I was able to go from having zero deep learning experience to easily implementing complicated architectures with TensorFlow. Many people recommend Keras as an alternative to TensorFlow, and I agree... but reading this book allowed me to understand the structure of the underlying code enough to use Keras much more effectively than if I had just started there and never learned what's going on under the hood.I was so impressed with the deep learning portion of this book that I went back and read the rest of it. I can't recommend this work highly enough.

This has to be at the top of my list of most highly recommended books! The amount of material it covers is awesome, and I can find almost no fault with it. The writing is extremely clear, easy to read, written in impeccable English. Very well edited. I don't think I came across any spelling or grammar errors, or any real errors at all. Truly solid writing. The breadth of information covered if quite wide. The choice to start with Scikit-Learn was interesting, but makes sense on some level while he's introducing the more basic machine learning concepts. Simple machine learning techniques like logistic regression, data conditioning, dealing with training, validation, test set. Even if you've read about these concepts a million times, you might still glean useful information from these pages. The Tensorflow section is also super well done. Straightforward setup instructions, pretty intelligible explanation of the basic concepts (variables, placeholders, layers, etc.) to get you started. The example code is quite good, and the notebooks are quite complete and seem to work well, with maybe a few tweaks and additional setup for some. I also found that the notebooks show more examples than what's in the book, which can be nice.I only went really hands on with the reinforcement learning notebook, and found that it was well done and a good base to start my own work from. Even just having a section on reinforcement learning is very rare in a book of this style, and Geron's samples and explanations are really solid. He obviously has a strong grasp of many varied fields within deep learning, and that includes reinforcement learning. The only thing I wish it had was an A3C sample, to make my life that much easier. But you can't have everything.I really liked his tips on which types of layers, activations, regularization, etc. are most effective, and gives good starting points for decent convergence. His explanation of multi-GPU Tensorflow was also quite good. The Tensorboard section was also very useful. In short, if you want ONE book to get you into machine learning, and Tensforlow is on your radar, you can't go wrong with this one. Highly recommended!

I have been a collector of books and classes of machine learning and deep learning for the last few years. Even though I come from a strong theoretical background, I have to say one must do hands on tinkering to be able to solve one's own problem successfully. Then for deep learning one must work with Tensorflow or Theano. However, I have been searching for a good hands-on book on tensorflow and had found none until this book.I purchased the kindle version so I can dive into this book early before the book comes out. I am not disappointed. It gives you the code on the familiar Python notebook to work on. The author really knows about Tensorflow and machine learning, and his teaching shows. There are pieces of information hard to find somewhere else, and I have spent hundreds to thousands to attend workshops.Needless to say, I have not done all the exercises yet. But I like this book enough that I will work on all the problems I am interested in.One disappointment though. I was hoping Keras, a high level api that enables fast experiments, is covered. It is not in this version. Sure hope it will be covered in the updated version.

Darius Kellner is a high school sophomore who describes himself as a Fractional Persian, half on his mother’s side. Living in Portland Oregon, he is dealing with feeling that he doesn’t quite belong along with bullying at school. He has one person that he considers to be a friend, and he regularly feels that his dad disapproves of him. Darius also takes medication for clinical depression which has had weight gain as a side effect, and Darius is overweight (his self-descriptor).After his babou’s (grandpa) test results reveal that the brain tumor is growing, the Kellner family quickly makes plans to leave the U.S. for a 3 week trip to Iran to visit him and tell him goodbye. This is Darius’ first trip to meet his grandparents and his first time stepping foot in Iran. While there, he feels the tension of not quite belonging–he doesn’t speak Farsi like his mom and younger sister do, and those who find out that he takes antidepressants there don’t understand mental health and tell him that he should be trying harder. He does, however, meet Sohrab who helps out Darius’ babou. Sohrab invites him to play soccer (non-American football), and Darius feels a tug towards Sohrab and accepts his invitation. Over the course of the book, we get to see more of this whirlwind friendship and what it means to belong. This book was truly excellent. First: it’s a rare YA book that has a character on medication for mental illness from the beginning. Furthermore, it’s even rarer that the character’s mental illness isn’t completely managed by medication. This truly shows a realistic portrayal of how they can help to manage mental illness but don’t cure it. Another thing done really well is the relationship between Darius and his father. His father also has depression and also takes medication for it. However, this doesn’t mean that they are close. I thought this was honestly quite realistic, and I saw some of my own relationship with my father emulated in that.I liked that this book also continued to change the trend of having words other than English italicized. Instead, the Farsi that appears in this book is kept in the same stylized font as the rest.Honestly, this was a super fantastic heart-rending read, and I definitely recommend it.

Words fail me as I try to describe what makes this such a wonderful "must read" book. The characters are developed in such detail that you love them all, despite their faults. The story is told so beautifully that you can't read it with a straight face, you will smile and frown, your brow will go up in concern, you will blush, grit your teeth, pout, and all the time be enchanted. While mental health and depression are an underlying theme, the story is all about family and friends, growing up, adapting, and saying goodbye. Add to this a little Star Trek, tea, Persian cuisine, and non-American football/soccer for an instant classic.

Darius Kellner, a half-Persian and half-American teenager searches to find his place in the world while living with depression. Darius and his family journey together to Iran, his mother's native country, and he discovers who is really is while bonding with his extended family and making an extraordinary friend. This debut novel is wonderfully written and offers an intimate portrait of how living with depression can impact daily life, family and self-worth. The setting is brought to life with wonderfully descriptive language and the compelling characters are a huge draw in this thoughtfully executed story.

Such a true and honest book. I felt so connected to Darius and his experiences. I loved the realness of it all. I felt his fears of never fitting in, of his experiences with depression, of being not quite persian nor american enough. This is an important book, a wonderful look at culture, our families, and what it means to be a struggling teen.

This delightful book transported me to Iran, where Darius travels to meet his mom's side of the family for the first time. Khorram does a fantastic job developing realistic, flawed characters and masterfully depicts their complicated relationships, especially the tensions between Darius and his father. I loved the realistic portrayal of depression, and all the Persian foods and traditions. A wonderful story about friendship, finding yourself, and learning that it's okay to not be okay.

I really enjoyed this book. The insight into Iranian family life was very interesting. The insight into the lives of people coping with depression was well handled and an education to those of us who lack understanding of this condition. Thank you for the heart warming and bittersweet story of friendship, family and growing up split between two worlds. This is the best of what novels can do.

This young adult debut from Adib Khorram is as subtle as the first rays of a desert sunset coloring the air. Things are left unspoken, as they often are, with heartbeaking results. This is a carrying theme throughout the book and will keep all the readers on their toes, gay, straight, whatever you are, you can't help but empathize with the story of Darius, in his struggle with love, family life, identity, race, and Star Trek, in an interesting and very unexpected contemporary coming of age tale.

This book doesn’t hide the truth about depression and self doubt. It’s raw and well written. The nerdy references form Darius are hilariously timed and the protagonist is as real as they get. If you want a good book about the struggles of teenage-hood, bi-cultural life, and realistic, I say get this.
