Having followed Zero during his adventure, I was aware of some of the lessons he encountered along the way. I bought this book (and extra copies) in anticipation of how well it would be written, as well as the value of the "lessons" within and my desire to share those lessons with my family and friends. I was not disappointed. Zero has a way of putting life's experiences into words that anyone reading will understand.Life can, at times, be a struggle and we all need something to help us put things into perspective. This book is one you will read, hold on to and refer back to often. Purchasing this book is a gift to yourself. After reading it and seeing how much insight is shared, I am sure you will want to share it, too!

This book is packed with information! 350 pages and they are full of valuable insight. It is a fast read, too, because sections are split up to a couple of pages at a time, the way I love to read, a little bit at a time. Or devour the whole thing in an afternoon. The first 87 pages are stories with a bit of a lesson at the end, and the rest is 25 chapters of lessons on how to better yourself and lead a more fulfilling life. This can be read all at once or one chapter at a time depending on what you feel you need help with. I love a book that makes you think a little bit differently, and this is some unique insight into how one person strayed from the norm and changed their life for the better.

Just a bunch of nuggets of good things to get you though some tough times. Pretty easy to digest. I have highlighted and look forward to reading a few pages each day. However there is on particular page that I go back to everyday. I found something that spoke to me and you may too. You'll never know unless you try.

You can turn to any section of this book to find an uplifting application to your life! This guy is very introspective, full of insight into his own behavior, a great analyzer of his own actions; therefore, an illustrator, through his own experiences, of our behavior. He is “one of us” and not a lofty instructor! These real life experiences about which he writes are presented in a humorous and honest fashion. Zero has the ability to laugh at himself!

The power of connections is very important to the human soul. One of the things I like most about this book is the connections the author makes on his travels. I've had problems in my life making true connections. The stories in this book let you see how many opportunities there really are to make true connections in life.

This is one of my favorite resources for myself. I use it similarly to a daily devotional by reading a passage almost everyday. He has written a no BS book about how you are getting in your own way and how to see future situations for what they are.

I've found it full of inspiration to see things differently and to appreciate more of what matters every day. Reading about Zero's journey, and how he overcomes the situations he encounters, brings a very real and identifiable edge to the text - this is what makes it ideal for all those who are seeking a little more meaning to their lives. This is the ideal book to dip into and it's definitely one to recommend to family and friends.

Max Booth is a very talented and funny writer. You wouldnt know it from reading this. His fiction typically harbors hilarious situations that yield unexpected results, but he doesnt rely on dick jokes. Typically.With this novel,his jokes were very highschool and it mostly relied on dialogue to deliver the punchline. Boring. It did get funny 2/3rds through. But that aint enough. The characters were trying to recapture their high school glory days, but were they really so glorious? Maybe its aesthetic, but i really dont want to read novels that peddle the myth of high school being the greatest time of our lives.The characters were relatable. Sort of. I did have a friendship like this in highschool. We even had a basement we hungout and did zany stuff in. So on that end I did connect.I think overall, i just wasnt vibing with this book. The premise rubbed me wrong from the start. Oh well. Would make a great movie though.Maybe its possible i didnt like this book because i dont have friends willing to shoot me? Bummer.

I was first introduced to Max Booth III via the This Is Horror Podcast, Episode 233. It was pretty obvious that he has a deep love of both horror and humor. So when I heard about Carnivorous Lunar Activities, it was a high priority for me to check it out. You know the plot: 2 old friends in a basement, one trying to convince the other to kill him because he says he's a werewolf.The first part of the book consists of the 2 main characters in the basement. The dialog between them is pretty humorous. If you've listened to the TIH Podcast, Max's personality really shines through. You can definitely tell that he wrote this book. There's a slow build up to the horror. As Justin repeats the events of the past few weeks, he gradually gets closer and closer to revealing the horrible truth. Once he does, buckle your seat-belt and hang on for the ride.Is he serious, or is he just crazy? I won't tell, read it and find out. You won't be disappointed.

Carnivorous Lunar Activities by Max Booth III is hilarious and heart-breaking at the same time. Max Booth builds great characters and writes unbeatable dialog. Carnivorous Lunar Activities lends itself to being performed as a play or being made into a movie.If My Dinner With Andre was rewritten by Quentin Tarantino and had a guy turning into a werewolf in it. Something like that.

After a long hiatus, it seems that horror writers have remembered werewolves are pretty badass when they are done well. Max Booth's "Carniverous Lunar Activities" is the newest entry to this cannon, joining other recent novels by Stephen Graham Jones (Mongrels) and Benjamin Percy (Red Moon).Carniverous Lunar Activities is at once heartfelt, terrifying, hilarious and ambitious. Readers of horror and/or coming of age novels will find equal parts here to enjoy. The dialogue in this book is absolutely incredible.

Carnivorous Lunar Activities was my first book by Max Booth III, and after reading this action-packed, dark comedic were-plot, I’ll definitely be back for more. This story follows the arcs of two characters, Ted and Justin, who are long-time friends and have a Punch-and-Judy rapport with one another. What I liked most about their relationship throughout the book was that it never felt forced, and instead was always natural, blunt, and honestly, it felt like I was eavesdropping on their conversation at times, which made me feel the need to hide behind the freezer, which has its own irony, I suppose.The first half of the book essentially takes place in one room, so it gave me a bit of a Tarantino vibe, which is by no means a bad thing. I quite like when stories are confined to a room because it gives a threatening air of suffocation and claustrophobia to the scene that you don’t get unless you’re trapped and anxious—something that definitely describes the mindset of both of our characters. As the story progresses, Justin confesses to Ted that he has fallen in with a rough crowd and has developed a taste for dog fighting, which eventually lead to even shadier encounters, one of which resulted in the infected, pulsating wound on his leg. Armed with silver bullets and chained to an anchor, the two drink PBRs, make a pact, and talk through what their lives have become: a mix of hunger and guilt. In the vein of John Dies at the End and Shaun of the Dead, Carnivorous Lunar Activities is a bloody werewolf romp of humor, body parts, and overturned cop cars. If you like a shot of comedy with your horror, I recommend grabbing 10 burgers, a pack of PBR, and buying this book to read under a full moon.With a fully belly and a long howl, I give it four stars.

The author gives a concise history of philosophy from Descartes to Voltaire, by a circuitous route that includes Leibniz, Newton, Locke, Hume etc. He provides a good description of the periods these people lived in and the challenges they faced when trying to publish their work(s). The book is enjoyable to read and one wished that there was more to absorb from such an important period of history.

Gottlieb’s new account of the enlightenment is a pleasant and easy read. The thought of major philosophers is balanced with their biographies and an overall sense of the enlightenment program (challenging the hegemony of the church and aristocracy by the advocacy of science and reason) comes through in a lucid fashion.The title is, however, somewhat misleading. The book principally concerns philosophy rather than science and the empirical method. The latter are discussed, of course, but the chapters cover Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Bayle (surprisingly), Leibniz and Hume, where one might have expected extended discussions (there are brief discussions) on Bacon, Newton and, e.g., the Dutch physicians/Newtonians who helped spread news of English science to their continental patients.Late in the book (p. 196), Gottlieb comments that “there are few avowed Leibnizians, Lockeans or Hobbists today.” He refers to a 2009 poll of philosophers “who were asked to pick the dead thinker with whom they most identified.” The top four: Hume, Aristotle, Kant, Wittgenstein. Fair enough, but why does Gottlieb’s survey of enlightenment philosophers end with Hume rather than with the equally influential (in all honesty, probably far more influential) Kant? Kant not only completes and extends some of the most important philosophic threads of the eighteenth century; he is a crucial bridge to the Romanticism which followed.We all have our favorites, of course, but I am surprised that Berkeley is not given far more attention, not just as a bridge to Hume, but as an enormous influence on such literary figures as Blake. If one looks at the book baldly it is essentially an account of seven philosophers. The final chapter “What Has the Enlightenment Ever Done for Us?” (a clever play on Cleese’s question concerning the Romans in Monty Python’s Life of Brian) attempts to pull all of the threads together in 13 tidy pages. Unfortunately, the enlightenment is far more complex than that and a book which at first appears to be a grand synthesis turns out to be a fairly basic primer.The “Suggestions for Further Reading” (p. 281) contain a spare eleven titles and Peter Gay’s magisterial study of the enlightenment is not among them. Gottlieb’s enlightenment is also essentially French, a kind of dual between Voltaire and Rousseau. Hume is not seen as part of the Scottish enlightenment or, indeed, as part of a larger British enlightenment. Johnson, e.g., is mentioned briefly and is contrasted with Hume, though Johnson explicitly said once that all of Hume’s ideas had passed through his own mind. Gottlieb catches the more moderate aspects of the British enlightenment (Hume scoring religion but in a reverent manner) and he appreciates the fact that the enlightenment begins in England—and Voltaire’s recognition and praise in that regard—but he fails to see how important these distinctions are. Hume makes a crucial and obvious (but somehow easily forgotten) distinction between faith and reason. Faith is, by its very definition, closed to rational attack. Thinkers who have that faith, Johnson, e.g., are still capable of embracing the great mass of the enlightenment program. At bottom, the enlightenment is an extremely complex set of ideas and debates whose ultimate contrast now is not with the church and aristocracy but with the romanticism(s) that replaced it. On another level it highlights the conflicts between science and philosophy which were of such deep concern to the Anglo-American mid 20th century. Gottlieb gives us some wonderful hints of this on p. 77: “Both [Locke and Hobbes] maintained that some traditional puzzles are merely confusions masquerading as problems, which appear to be substantive only because people do not pay enough attention to how words get their meanings. This idea was far from new in the history of philosophy—it is found in Plato’s time and in every subsequent period—but Hobbes made much more of it than most, and Locke followed his example.”Yes, indeed. And that is why Wittgenstein makes the list of the top four philosophers with whom contemporary philosophers associate themselves. The most important questions are, as he argued, those of which we cannot speak. Hence the importance of the British enlightenment’s figures of faith (Newton, Boyle, Johnson, et al.) for our understanding of the total picture. Gottlieb gives us glimpses of these issues but does not pursue them to the degree that one might wish.Bottom line: a lucid and workmanlike exposition of the thought of a handful of enlightenment philosophers that is very light (but occasionally quite suggestive) on the overall patterns that constitute this era in Western thought.

Unless you're studying for a advanced degree in philosophy, I'm afraid reading the stuff is much like panning for gold: a great deal of effort for a very occasional nugget of insight. But this book - wow! You really get inside the head of these revered icons via Gottlieb's narrative. He provides all the goodies: historical context, character description, incidental correspondence between philosophers, high praise or, sometimes, puerile criticism by one philosopher of another., etc., etc. It is refreshing to encounter a very readable, well explained summation of the various philosophies of these iconic figures without endlessly try to slog through their sonorous screeds. This is the first book on philosophy I've had trouble putting down. I can't wait for Gottlieb's next one!

“The Dream of Enlightenment” by Anthony Gottlieb It seems that much of what is worth remembering in Western (European) Philosophy happened in two spurts of about 2 centuries each---the Athens of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle (550-400 BC) and the Enlightenment of Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke, Newton, Leibniz, Voltaire and Hume (1600-1800). This second period is the subject of this outstanding book (the same author also summarized the first period in his “A Dream of Reason”). His theory of motion was for a short time a rival to that developed somewhat later by Isaac Newton (1642-1727), and he also applied his mathematics to the design of lens for telescopes. He distrusted the senses and thought that all wisdom was to be found by rational thought, a process which led him to several deductive proofs of God. He is remembered mainly as a mathematician and an abstract thinker who made the basis of knowledge the most basic question of philosophy. The work of three very different Englishmen--Thomas Hobbs (1588-1679), John Locke (1632-1704) and David Hume (1711-76), a Dutch-Portugese Jew---Baruch Spinoza (1632-77), a German polymath---Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716), and two French intellectuals--- Francios Voltaire (1694-1778) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78), completes the author’s discussion of the Enlightenment. It may seem strange that Rousseau is included in this pantheon of philosophers, because he was definitely not reconciled to the civilization of his day, nor to that of any other. The Enlightenment is generally credited with the ideas that led to the American Declaration of Independence and the French Revolution. It is also frequently credited with the ideas that led to the reign of terror following the French Revolution and to the Russian and German dictatorships of the 20th century. According to the author, the case for the Enlightenment is on its firmest ground when we point to the waning power of religious authorities to interfere in and even end people’s lives, to the toleration of religious dissent, to scientific progress, and to the gradual dismantling of political institutions that were too close to feudalism and too far from democracy.

I've read this series a couple of years back when I was still a student (had more time to read then) and I loved it! The problem was that I used to borrow the hardcopies from libraries, hence I had to read whatever was available in the library instead of going chronologically down the series. Bought a kindle recently, and the first book that came to mind was this! And I still love it reading it the second time as much as I did the first time :) I can't wait to go down the series one by one!There are two things that intrigue me most when I got started on Book 1 of this fantastic series; firstly, to know more about this futuristic world where interplanetary travel is very much possible, and secondly, to follow the development of the lead couple who seem so different in characters, yet so perfect for one another.Reading this series is like watching a TV serial for me. I love it that the books are still coming out year after year. I strongly encourage those who love crime-related cum romance novels to get started on these!

So I am gonna start with the parts of this series that I liked and that made me keep reading even the times I wanted to smack the lead charecters or throw my reader in frustration or simply just went alright already we got it so please stop with these stupid repeating dreams.. THEY ARE BORING... or when another sex scene was there.. and wow I just made this series sound horrible... but it really isn’t.. it just have a lot of elements that are, in my opinion, really really stupid... but back to the good parts... I love the detective parts.. sure there are some plot overlaps in the books because okay how many different murders can you really imagine, but there are some that are truly spectactular. The Icove case being the most memorable.. but with that being said for crying out loud let Eve sleep at some point.. the amount of sleep jd wants us to think Eve survives by should make her brain not function nearly enough to be a good cop..Now onto the things i hate in this series.. I will admit to liking romances.. or rather books that have some element of romance in them.. without it I rarely find a book interesting.. don’t know why.. but the “romance” in this book? I simply have no words... I first heard about these book because of a “best couples in books” list and roarke and eve was at the top.. after having read the series I cannot understand why... you put eve with roarke and you get the transformation from a steelspined intelligent cop to pathetic spineless doormat.. she lets Roarke do whatever he wants and even when she gets mad he just have to yell a bit about all he does for her and she caves... and this is most apparent when it comes to other women... here are some facts.. the series are 40 something books plus novellas but only covers about 3-4 years.. and in every single one of them Eve has to deal with a beautiful clever acomplished woman that has slept with her husband.. that is over 40 women in about 4 years she gets thrown into her face, many of them telling her how they where together how he was the best sex of their life how they would steal him from her if possible etc. that is about one woman a month she gets a graphic reminder of her husbands past. and ALWAYS roarke’s reaction is oh it was just sex no biggie.. and it is often remarked how these women are only a small fraction of the ones he’s had sex with.. he also constantly comments on beautiful women.. incl the ones he’s slept with.. like Eve says about one of his exes that she prob. paid for her body and he is all but how well spend those money where... and all of this Eve just accept.. in book 4 she comes home to see before mentioned bought body kiss her husband... and he does nothing, in fact laughs at her when she gets a little bit jealoux... and these sort of situations constantly happens.. he works with many of the women and a LOT of them wants him back... but Eve just has to deal... and then there is THE ex.. the one he was actually in love with.. the one he keeps meeting alone and not telling Eve about even though she told him she didn’t want him to.. you know basically cheats on her with even if he didn’t sleep with her... and again Eve does nothing... and in fact later on feels like she can’t tell Roarke how she didn’t like a woman because she reminded her of THE ex, because oh no what if it hurts HIS feelings... and in all of this we are ever only told about ONE, I repeat ONE of Eves former lovers.. and what happens? Well he’s in love with Eve and decides to kiss her (something one of Roarkes exes did to him in front of Eve without Roarke doing anything) and Eve pretty much punches him for doing it.. and Roarkes reaction? He goes balistic and ends up FIGHTING this other man that Eve so very clearly is not interested in... in other words Roarks past is okay but Eve’s is not? She should be okay with him having slept with half the women in the world but really how could she not be a pristine little virgin when he decided he wanted her... I can’t decide if this is general societal view on genderroles or just a really screwed up relationship.. probably both...And while we are on relationships... Charles Monroe and Louise Dimatto... I refuse to believe if you love someone you are just going to be completely 100% okay with your significant other sleeping with other women, romancing them.. no matter how much you tell yourself it is only a job, it is not... as a man you can’t exactly fake being sexually aroused now can you.. you can’t go oh look at my super realistic strapon and no that is not my D hanging limp there it is a third ball... their relationship is not that of people who love each other.. it is one of two F buddies who think they love each other because they haven’t found one they actually do yet.. they’d know the difference...

It’s a little unsettling how close to today’s political climate this book finds itself when it’s set years and years in the future.In the beginning, it threw me off a little to have a story about a cop set in a time when guns are considered collector’s items. But once I got used to the premise, JD Robb’s style of writing swept me up and I had to find out whodunnit.So many times the tension in a book like this is fabricated in the romantic relationship instead of naturally developing from the crime. Not here. Neither of the people in the relationship are perfect, and they have baggage and lots of issues, but they communicate and respect each other. Their ability to have a healthy relationship despite lots of roadblocks allows the reader to stay focused on the crime and where the story is going.I’m ready for the next in the series!

Reviewers of this book missed the mark tremendously. I find it so discouraging to find a book that gets such glowing reviews only to find myself struggling page by page.I found this book listed on a website as a must read romance. I'm completely baffled as to how that happened.This book is set in the future where it seems humans have become hedonists and the entire world has run amuk. Prostitution is a high paying career and guns are outlawed. I found it disappointing that there had to be a political element to the story. Why was the Conservative Senator a bad guy right off the bat? The future in this world looked bleak, dangerous and shallow.I did not finish this book. I wasn't at all interested in any of the characters that were introduced. They all seemed selfish and unrelatable. The "romance" was nothing more than a simple attraction between two adults. I wasn't interested and I truly can't believe anybody else was. Five thumbs down.

LOVE LOVE LOVE J. D. ROBB's IN DEATH SERIES. This is the 1st book in the series and introduces you to EVE and ROARKE. Started this series because a friend loaned me book 2 or 3 in the series and had to buy the 1st and 2nd to see how EVE and ROARKE met and hooked up. I've been hooked ever since. Each book is a stand a lone story about a murder investigation but you'll enjoy them so much more if read in order. That's because there is a back story in each book about the main characters's (Eve and Roarke's) relationship with each other as well as their circle of friends/co-workers which grows with each book. While the murder mystery is always a great story...I also love to see how all the characters' lives grow and develop.

Covers all the basics in a simple & clear way. Not very in depth nor long, I read it in less than an hour!

It seemed too simple, with not a lt of "meat". But, for the uninitiated, it mght just help with the decision to get the snake, or not.

This book is very thin, but informative. My daughter read through it quickly and learned things about her juvenile python that she hadn't already learned. Good book!
