I guess one of my kids bought this book by accident. It was just a few bucks, and I played the game once on my kid's tablet, so I read the book, after tightening security to prevent future purchases.It includes the phrase, "hold the mouse button as fast as possible." How is that possible? I can repeatedly click the mouse fast, but how do you repeatedly hold?Also, my tablet doesn't have a mouse. Ivan then travels to Leningrad, where he finds work in a metal shop and rents a room from a widow who falls in love with him and shares stories from her past (most notably the forced collectivization of Ukrainian farms), providing a counterbalance to Ivan's experiences in Siberia. Suffering is everywhere, but Grossman finds no glory or redemption in it, and just when you think things can't get bleaker, he offers up a new vignette that sinks deeper into misery, though there is a glimmer of hope toward the end. I shared all this with my own peopleThere, where misfortune had abandoned us."Anna Akhmatova's RequiemIf Life and Fate (New York Review Books Classics) may rightfully be seen as Vasily Grossman's masterpiece, his Everything Flows may rightfully be seen as his testament, a requiem if you will not only for his own life but for the lives of those who lived in his time and place."Everything Flows" tells a simple, yet emotionally deep and politically nuanced tale. The story begins with the 1957 return to Moscow of Ivan Grigoryevich after 30 years of forced labor in the Gulag. 1957 marked the year, following Khrushchev's denunciation of the excesses of Stalin, in which the tide of prisoners returning from the Gulag reached its peak. He arrives at the Moscow flat of his cousin Nikolay. Nikolay, a scientist with less than stellar skills, has reached some measure of success at the laboratory through dint of being a survivor. The meeting in the flat is entirely unsatisfactory for both parties. Grossman paints a vivid picture of Nikolay, more than a bit jealous that Ivan's light had always shone brighter than his own prior to Ivan's arrest. Nikolay suffers from the guilt of one who was not arrested and who is painfully aware of the choices he made to keep from being arrested. It seems clear that Ivan represents a mirror into which Nikolay can see only his own hollow reflection.Ivan leaves Moscow for his old city of Leningrad, the place where he was first arrested in 1927. By chance, he runs into the person, Pinegin, whose denunciation placed him in jail in the first place. Once again, Ivan is a mirror and Pinegin is horrified at what he is faced with, what he has buried for thirty years. Ironically, and to great effect, we see Pinegin's horror recede once he settles down to a sumptuous lunch at a restaurant reserved for foreigners and party officials. Ivan does not know about the denunciation and Grossman here embarks on a discourse on the different types and forms of denunciation available to the Soviet citizen. It is a remarkable discourse that shows how many different ways there are to participate in a purge and how many ways there are to legitimize ones participation and/or acquiescence.From Leningrad Ivan travels to a southern industrial city where he finds work and eventually finds a deep and satisfying love in the person of his landlady Anna. The centerpiece of that relationship is the brutal honesty involved; Anna spends a night detailing her role in the pointless, needless famine that swept the Ukraine in 1932-1933. It is an account made even more chilling by the straightforward, confessional nature of its telling. But it is also redemptive and shines a light on what might be called Grossman's vision that love and freedom are two goals, not mutually exclusive, that an honest accounting of our lives forms the essence of our shared humanity.The above summary does not do justice to the power of Grossman's prose or to the literary and political importance of the work. Since the death of Stalin, the Soviet line had remained relatively firm - Stalin's excesses were the product of a disturbed mind that represented a horrible deviation from the theory and principles of Leninism. The USSR's best path was the one that returned it to the path created by Lenin. Khrushchev first enunciated this line. Even Gorbachev's perestroika was based on the theory that a return to first-principles, i.e. Leninism, would save the USSR from destruction.Grossman, prophetically, did not buy into this line and Everything Flows'last chapters are notable for a remarkable attack not only on Stalin but on Lenin and Lenin's anti-democratic tendencies that had more in common with Ivan the Terrible than the principles of revolutionary democracy. "All the triumphs of Party and State were bound up with the name of Lenin. But all the cruelty inflicted on the nation also lay - tragically - on Lenin's shoulders." Grossman may have been the first to make this leap and he paid the price for making that leap. (This involves the suppression of his Life & Fate and Everything Flows.) Grossman's explicit claim that Stalin was not a deviationist from Leninism but its natural-born progeny was profoundly subversive and there is no doubt in my mind that it was this difference that explains why, under Khruschev's 'thaw', that One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was publishe while Life and Fate and Everything Flows was banned.Despite the horrors set out, quietly and without excess rhetoric, Grossman returns to a somewhat optimistic vision of mans search for freedom: "No matter how mighty the empire, all this is only mist and fog and, as such, will be blown away. Only one true force remains; only one true force continues to evolve and live; and this force is liberty. To a man, to live means to be free."Robert Chandler's translation of Everything Flows is exquisite. He brings the same clarity and emotional investment in Grossman's work that he brought to his prize-winning translations of Platonov and Hamid Ismailov's The Railway. EVERYTHING FLOWS is Grossman's last novel after LIFE AND FATE. Unlike that novel there is a central plot. Ivan has been released from a Soviet prison camp after 15 or 20 years.He wanders around in Moscow and Leningrad and sees family and people from the past.He eventually settles in a smaller town and gets a job.He has a relationship with his landlady and she dies.Then he goes to where he grew up - end of novel.Sounds boring - it isn't. I'd say close to half the novel is taken up by digressions. The digressions are by and large fascinating.His landlady was a minor participant in the collectivization of the Ukraine and tells a long and harrowing tale of terror.After her death , Ivan delivers his thoughts on Russia , Stalin and Lenin and it's strong stuff.In Soviet terms his comments on Lenin are pure heresy.This novel is an indictment of the Soviet Union and an effective one.Chances are you will come to this after LIFE AND FATE.This is a much shorter work and very different but the two books work well together.

The work moves a bit unevenly at the outset, following a survivor of the Gulags and his interactions with family, his reminescenses of his past and the displacement he feels for a time and Society to which he feels alienated. Alienation is a major part of the novel, with the protagonist unable to find any clear fit for himself after his years away from a world he previously understood. Upon review, the author seems to show that even that life itself was rather ill-fitting and nebulous. It is as if the world itself was amorphous as much as his current state, a place where all flows along, but flows without clear certainty of footing or permanence. The work seems to culminate with an alliance with an unlikely landlady, this seemingly as unnatural a fit at first as much anything else in this world.

I just finished "Everything Flows." It is one of literature's great gifts, one of the most insightful and moving books I have ever read. In a way, it is both uplifting and humbling at the same time. I just cannot say enough about the "testament" that this book is. Through Grossman's work, we, in some small way, can bear witness to an entire, tragic era.I will not repeat the details of Leonard Fleisig's outstanding and astute review of "Everything Flows," but simply add that this short book is a novella with connected essays that somehow reveals both the nature of the individual characters and of a whole society under siege. It is beautifully written and translated, and with great economy of style, Ivan and the other characters come alive and we seem to enter their inner beings.I have read a great deal about the Soviet experience, including Grossman's "Life and Fate" and Simon Sebag Montefiore's biography of Stalin and Stephen Cohen's one on Bukharin as well as the wonderful novels of Victor Serge. I highly recommend them all, but if you have to read one book about the Soviet tragedy, read "Everything Flows."I am so grateful to the New York Review of Books for retrieving so many lost treasures from the past.

This cookbook makes me very, very happy. It is a book of dreams - things I am going to make one, by one. There are plenty of photos and step by step instructions for all things pastry. It's a big, weighty book with lots of explanation. Even though I seriously want to make everything in it I doubt I have the skills to do so but that is what a book like this is for - to make you want to stretch and experiment. Then fail and try again until you finally master the skill.

This is the second book of Christophe's that I own and he's already one of my favorite pastry authors. Comprehensive enough for more advanced bakers but accessible enough for those just starting out, each of his recipes includes multiple photographs guiding you through the steps. Recipes are broken out into components (ie dough, filling, frosting) so you can use just one if you want to venture out into making your own creations. A great survey of classical French pastry recipes and techniques.

Just made the stollen recipe. Cake-like texture - but too much dried fruit to dough ratio for my taste. Thanks Chef!Update: 2/27/2017 Chocolate Madeleines are to die for. But oven temperature is too high. Should be 400F, not 425F. Adjust baking time according to size of madeleine mold.

I am a chef and wanted to get back into the classic deserts. This book is a treasure trove of material and information and a great resource. I probably won't ever get to make everything in it, but I will try. I am glad I bought this!

Fantastic recipes and great step by step illustrations. Everything I have tried tasted and looked great. So glad I am able to bring back a taste of France in my house. Recipes are not easy and take time, but all worth it!

I love this book. If you are looking to make the perfect Patisserie this book will lead you down the road. It is a series of lessons that take you step by step with photos to guide you. There is so little chance of error in your baking. I truly think that almost every pastry basic is covered. There have been some books that I have beeen so impressed with that I have bought them for friends as gifts. This wll probably be one of those books.

Made almost every single dessert in this book.. For all Pastry lovers this is the perfect book!!!... for the home baker it might take a little extra steps just to make sure it is done right but totally worth it!! AMAZING!!!

Federici’s work on feminism goes back to the 1970’s when she felt neither the Radical Feminists nor the Social Feminists provided a satisfactory explanation of the roots of the exploitation of women. In this book she explores the transition from feudalism to capitalism and its affect on women. The title draws on Shakespeare’s The Tempest with Caliban representing the anti-colonial rebel and the Witch representing female heretics, healers, disobedient wives, women who dared to live alone, and those who inspired slaves to revolt. Compare that model of strong women to the new model of femininity which emerged at the end of the 17th Century (after centuries of state terrorism): ideal wife, passive, obedient, thrifty, chaste. Federici investigates the 300 years of witch hunts of the Middle Ages, the role of which she sees to create out of the female body workers for the burgeoning capitalist economy. She tells the horrific story of the many ways that the power of women was destroyed culminating in the massacre and cruel torture of hundreds of thousands of women. The witch hunt was a turning point in women’s lives. No doubt the psyche of every woman is affected still by so many of the strongest of us being so treated. Yet the witch hunt is one of the most understudied phenomena in European history.

The language is highly academic and a struggle for this layman. I barely made it 20 pages in and wass exhausted. I was really excited about this book from all I had heard, too. Maybe when I have more mental energy I will be able to tackle it again. IF you are a voracious reader who isn't fatigued by over complicated language, perhaps you would like to give it ago. The reviews I've read are outstanding.

This book is thought-provoking. Whether you are a victim of sexual assault or not the book places social responsibility on everyone to create an environment that is healthy. I loved this book and how it didn't shy away from discussing deep topics, and how Federici utilized history as a way to back up her claims.

Silvia Federici's book "Caliban and the Witch" demonstrates the absolute necessity of women's studies for a thorough and scientific understanding of history. Focusing on the role of women and the body in the process by Marx and Adam Smith described as "original accumulation", i.e. the violent expropriation of the feudal commons in the movement towards a capitalist society, Federici demonstrates that a true war against women was an important part of the ruling class' strategy.The book assesses various aspects of this development, including witchcraft and the witch-hunts, the "Christianization" (or rather Catholization) of the North and South American native civilizations, the role of philosophical mechanism and the developers of the scientific method (Bacon, Descartes, Newton, Hobbes, etc.), and the early slave trade. In each case Federici masterfully shows how this development came to be, what role it played in the process of 'original accumulation', and why it was favored temporarily by the ruling class. She also gives very strong evidence that things like fear of witchcraft, patriarchy, racism etc., often seen as the inevitable and 'natural' results of ignorance and superstition in those societies, were in reality forced onto the common people as part of a top-down campaign to destroy the backbone of the feudal communities.What is an additional interesting contribution of this book is Federici's evidence that there was not only widespread peasant resistance against the process of enclosure, capitalization and expropriation, but more particularly that women often played a very major role in these resistance movements, especially after the German Peasant War ended in a massacre. Many of the women who would later be burned and persecuted as witches were likely survivors of these resistance movements and therefore both had strong connections with local farming communities and resentment against authority, a dangerous combination for the ruling classes. To me it was also remarkable new information to learn about how common female wage-labor in the cities was in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, as well as the degree of acceptance of sexuality and magic. Of course we should not in any way try to paint too rosy a picture of the late feudal era, which everyone knows had enough terror and tyranny of its own, but Federici shows that even then there was a strong current of people resisting both (proto-)capitalism and its predecessor.In her historical panorama, Federici adresses many other writers on women and the body and their subjugation, in particular the feminists, Marx, Foucault and such people as Le Roy Ladurie and Carlo Ginzburg. In my view Federici overstates her case against Marx a bit; she is correct that the role of the subjugation of women in particular was not much addressed by him, but it certainly was by Engels, and I also think that the insights she shows in this work would have been able to count on Marx' full assent. She also seems to miss the fact that "primitive accumulation" is a mistranslation of Marx' term, so that accusations of Marx missing the fact that such expropriatory violence takes place as part of capitalism even today miss the mark.Stronger is her case against Foucault, where she can show that Foucault not only completely ignores the importance of the witch-hunts and the Plague as turning points for feudal and post-feudal society, but that he also locates his famous instrumentalist subjugation of the body far too late in history (Foucault places it at the late 18th century, Federici rather in the 16th). In any case the scope of her knowledge of writers on these subjects is great, and the way in which she gives a context to the ideas of Descartes and other mechanists on "L'Homme Machine" (the term is 18th C.) is striking.Overall, this is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in history, original accumulation and women's studies.

This book showed how the working classes were divided along gender lines as industrial capitalism took over. It also shows the terror campaigns that were conducted to shock the lower classes into accepting the loss of the commons.This book is one of the most educational I've read, but it does suffer from more academic jargon than a non-academic may be used to. A dictionary or google will solve that issue.

This book has a very original point of view about the so called Witch Hunt: reasons were economical more than religious. I surely agree with the writer's view though it must not be forgotten that religion causes to persecution were very strong back then. Of course religion was hiding (like today) the real issue: power. But, as historians, we should be careful not to apply philosophical categories to times they don't belong to. Silvia Federici is anyhow very balanced in her research.This book should be read by all those who are interested in Witches + real history.

These are super cute and easy to draw. I got this for my little girl who in getting into Manga and Anime so this was perfect. She already draws but wanted to do something along these lines. It's hard to find something that isn't overly sexual for a younger person to draw but this was perfect.

this is a lot of fun if your an artist and you like to doodle.. i enjoy just sitting and doing some doodles... i can't see a young child getting this book and just going for it.. unless they have some artistic ability but maybe i am wrong in saying this.. i enjoy it..

I bought this book to go in my daughter's stocking, for some reason I was under the impressipn this book was only about 8in tall. Nope! Its around 8x12, no matter under the tree it goes, she's going to love it!

It's a cute how to book and my daughter really liked it.

Got this for my niece who loves to draw. She LOVES it. Cute pictures and easy to follow for an elementary aged artist. Also good for older Aunties who also like to doodle 😉

It spends a lot of space advertising other books in the Series and it really doesn’t show the techniques just draw this line then that definitely not as in-depth as I was looking for

kid loves it.

Now I have to buy one for my neighbors grandchildren because at Thanksgiving they were playing with my daughter's book and didn't want to give it back.
